Principal's Message

2023 Planning

It may still seem a way off for families, but in my role, I need to be looking ahead and beginning to plan for the start of the 2023 school year. May I ask, if any families already know that their child/ren will be leaving the school at the end of the year – that you let us know now, or as soon as you know a move will take place. The number of students enrolled each year influences everything from class structures to employment of staff and funding received to run the school. The earlier that I can know of potential changes, the better I am able to plan. The best way to notify us that your child will be leaving is to email or phone the office.

Stage 3 Excursion

There were some very tired and weary-looking faces that stepped off the buses last Wednesday evening at the conclusion of the Stage 3 excursion. I took that as a sign that the students had squeezed as much enjoyment out of the Bathurst excursion as they possibly could. With the Covid cloud still lingering around the world, we were pleased that despite one student testing positive on the morning of the camp and therefore unable to attend, Covid did not disrupt the camp or cause the need for families to collect students from Bathurst while it was underway.

My sincere thanks on behalf of all of the students and parents to the 6 teachers that were willing to spend time away from their own families to provide our students this opportunity – Mr Semmens, Miss Nichols, Mrs Lantz, Mrs Cooper, Miss Bassett and Mr Niddrie. They all contributed to the planning and organisation of the excursion and went above and beyond to care for the students while away. Their dedication and care is a credit to each of them.

Breakfast Club

The P&C coordinated breakfast club got underway last week with the support of volunteers. We have told the students that they can attend the breakfast club any Monday, Wednesday or Friday morning that they have missed breakfast or are still hungry. If they present at the canteen, they will be provided with some toast and a spread, a piece of fruit and a drink. There is no cost to obtain some breakfast, but coin donations of any kind will be warmly received as they help keep the breakfast club operating well.

Thank you to the P&C for coordinating this, children that are well fed in the morning are better placed to be successful learners during the day.

Have a great week!

David Holland

Newcastle Permanent Maths Competition

The 42nd Newcastle Permanent Primary School Mathematics Competition was conducted earlier this year in July. Newcastle Permanent has been the sole sponsor for each of those 42 years – our thanks to the Newcastle Permanent for supporting this unique opportunity. Competition organisers emailed schools this week with a full list of our students’ results. In 2022, entries were at very high levels, with 339 schools entering and a total of 20,570 students participating.

Lambton Public students have done very well. Our students will receive their certificates at next week’s whole-school assembly on Thursday afternoon.

Certificates, in each year division, are awarded to each student who participated as follows:

Additional staff development days

The Department of Education NSW is providing two additional staff development days – one at the end of 2022 and one at the end of 2023 – to support teachers’ professional learning and development which may have been impacted by COVID-19 over the past 2 years and in readiness for the implementation of new curriculums which will be mandated in 2023.

This increases the annual school development days for teachers to 6 per year. The additional days will be held on

  • Monday 19 December 2022 (Tuesday 20 December 2022 is also a staff development day)
  • Monday 18 December 2023 (Tuesday 19 December 2023 is also a staff development day)

As a result of this additional staff development day, the students’ last day of school for 2022 will now be Friday 16 December – please note this change on your calendar.

Thanks to those parents and carers that have already taken a few moments to complete the Tell Them from Me surveys. If you haven’t yet completed the survey  it is not too late. Participation in the survey takes around 15 minutes, it is anonymous and helps us identify trends within our school and better inform school priorities.

COVID-smart measures to continue throughout Term 4

From Week 1, Monday 10 October, the following COVID-smart measures will remain in place in our schools:

•            Students and staff must stay at home if unwell and test for COVID-19 if showing any symptoms

•            Extra cleaning of bathrooms, drinking fountains and other high touch areas will continue in Term 4

•            Masks continue to be strongly encouraged for all staff, students and school visitors, particularly when indoors and when physical distancing is not possible. Masks continue to be mandatory for all staff working with students at greater risk of severe illness if they were to get COVID-19.

•            Household or close contacts who are symptom-free can attend mainstream schools if they receive a negative RAT result every day for 5 school days and wear a mask (staff and high school students) while on site.

•            Natural ventilation will be maintained with windows and doors open whenever possible, including when cooling/heating systems are in use.

•            Additional circuit breaker measures continue to be implemented at schools when the risk of transmission within the school or wider community is considered high. Some schools may be directed to temporarily reintroduce additional COVID-19 measures including mandatory mask-wearing to minimise transmission risks.

Refer to COVID-smart measures for further details.

Parenting Ideas

Promoting personal resilience focuses on helping kids cope with life’s hurts, disappointments and challenges in the present, while building strengths for the future. In this week's article Mr Michael Grose explains how lessons in resilience happen everyday and how we can make the most of these lessons when they came our way. We hope you enjoy this week's article.
