2 June 2020 Term 2 Week 6

Principal’s Report

Mismatch Friday

Dear Parents and Carers,

I would like to thank all parents and carers for your support in staying off site last week, dropping children at the gates and picking them up from outside school. The students adapted to the changes extremely well. It was great to see older children looking after their younger siblings and the calm manner in which small misunderstandings about pick-up locations were handled and resolved. It was obvious by the end of the week that the routines had been established as everyone knew where to be picked-up. We need to continue to ask all non-essential adult visitors to remain off site for the foreseeable future and really appreciate your understanding about this.

Congratulations to our Year 6 leaders who are implementing new hygiene practices and cleaning sports equipment after each use. The responsibility shown last week was fantastic to see.

Wonderful Week 1 of Face to Face Teaching and Learning

It seems most students and teachers were very happy to be back in the swing of face to face teaching and learning last week. Much was discovered from working with our “Learning Frameworks,” whilst the students were learning at home and we are trying to integrate some of this with our teaching/learning program. Here are some images of Week 1 fun and learning face-to face.

Reconciliation Week

This year’s theme ‘In this together’ has a resonance beyond that Reconciliation Australia probably imagined when the theme was announced early this year. Reconciliation week is about exploring how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation and having a conversation is a really important part of what Reconciliation Week is all about. The Department of Education suggests kicking off conversations by sharing or talking about some music, activities, a video, a podcast or a book and talk about what struck you, what you agreed with and what you were challenged by. It’s also important to recognise that Reconciliation doesn’t just happen in Reconciliation Week and it is important to explore our shared histories, cultures, and achievements at different times throughout the year. Here are some resources suggested DoE that might be useful for these conversations at home. Please note, I have not read nor listened to all of these.

Parking Around the School

With the new routines and wet weather, traffic seemed busier than usual and I need to remind everyone of the importance of abiding by traffic and parking laws to ensure the safety of our students and to maintain a smooth traffic flow for everyone. We are lucky to have Trafalgar Park across the road which is a great place to meet if you would like to catch up and chat with friends.

Additionally, with the return to school and COVID-19 restrictions in mind, Council will be temporarily expanding the No Parking (Kiss and Drop) areas around schools, to give parents more space to drop their children off quickly. To implement this Council will identify locations and install additional signage. These temporary signs will be up as long as required under the Public Health Orders. The Council Rangers have been briefed on the enforcement of these yellow COVID-19 signs around schools and will enforce them. Please be aware that they have already been active in the Stuart Street cul-de-sac and Kiss and Drop Zones on both sides of the school.

Reports

In an effort to not only accurately report on student learning between home and school this semester, but to use the formal reporting process as a way to improve student learning, we’re re-structuring the Semester 1 reporting process. Reports will include grades for students’ content knowledge and skill development in Mathematics and English, commitment to learning, social development, student self-evaluation and learning goals.  An important part of this process is both student and parent input. Students will be surveyed in class to evaluate their learning and from this evaluation, set future learning goals. Parents will be invited to participate in a phone interview with their child’s teacher to also develop goals, help teachers understand student achievements during the learning from home period as well as hearing the teacher’s judgement about the student’s achievement against syllabus outcomes. Reports will be emailed home at the end of Week 1, Term 3.

Parent – Teacher Phone Interviews

Parents and carers will have the opportunity to have a formal, 10-minute phone interview with their child’s teacher between Monday 15 June and Friday 26 June. Interview bookings can be made through School Interviews using code g34qm from Monday 8 June at 4pm.

At your allocated phone interview time your child's teacher will call the parent / carer who made the booking. If you miss the call, the teacher will call again during your allotted time. In most cases we anticipate one phone call per student (e.g. make use of speaker phone options). Your assistance in facilitating this is appreciated. Please expect school phone lines to be busy during this process and wait for teachers to call you.

To make the most of your phone interview, you may wish to consider the following questions:

1. What are your child's strengths / areas to develop?

2. What did you learn about your child as a school student during the learning from home period? Where they able to solve problems on their own? Where they motivated to engage with the learning from home program? Where they able to use technology for a learning purpose?

3. What goals would you like your child to work towards / achieve this year?

Changes to the opportunity class placement process for 2020 Year 4 students

The 2021 Year 5 opportunity class placement process was put on hold in April 2020 due to the COVID-19 situation.

We now have a revised and simplified timeline for the OC placement process to ensure that students and families can have certainty about their placement as soon as possible.

The changes include:

·         A new date for online applications. Parents must apply between 9 June 2020 and 26 June 2020. Late applications cannot be accepted.

·         A new test date - Wednesday 16 September 2020.

To ensure fair and consistent assessment of students across New South Wales, students will be offered places based only on their test results this year – there will be no school assessment scores.

There will also be no opportunity for appeals given the tight timeframes.

For further detailed information I encourage you to visit https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5

Chicken Pox

I am letting you know that a student in Year 5 has a mild case of chicken pox (although it is not a notifiable disease). For more information, please follow the link for information from NSW Health;  https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/factsheets/Pages/Chickenpox.aspx

New Classrooms

As you are aware, for many years, a number of classrooms at Newport Public School have been demountable classrooms. Recently three of these demountable classrooms were taken away by DoE Assets. Two of these are being replaced with a building called an MDR (Modular Design Range) which will become part of our permanent building count. Work to set-up the foundations for this building is currently underway on the Western side of the school. The building is planned to be craned in on Saturday 13 June (weather permitting) and will take about a month to commission.

Many thanks to the Farmer Family

Some beautiful native plants were recently donated to the school by the Farmer Family (Linda Farmer is one of our School Learning Support Officers or SLSOs). Many thanks for your contribution and the trouble you went to, to deliver the plants. They will be planted around the front entrance and the frog pond and will certainly add to our school environment.

Congratulations

A warm welcome to our latest Newport Bub! Congratulations Ingrid and Ollie on the safe arrival of Xavier Neave.

We can't wait for a visit!

Finally, please see below important news from our P & C.

Kind regards,

Natalie Baldi

P and C

Dear Parents, Guardians, Carers and Staff,

We write to you with mixed emotions. It has been a difficult start to the year. Many in our community have experienced significant hardship due to Covid-19; it has put a strain on households in numerous ways, but we sincerely hope that, notwithstanding these challenges, you and your families are safe and healthy.

In the current crisis it is more important than ever to remain connected. This has been a challenge for the P and C as we were to hold a general meeting, to which you all would have been invited, on 14 May. This event did not take place due to the restrictions on gatherings and the limitations of the Constitution (which makes no provision for remote meetings). You may be interested to read this article from The Sydney Morning Herald yesterday. That said, the P and C executive and Natalie Baldi met, and we will circulate those minutes to you soon.

One of the main topics for discussion was the school canteen, given the resignations of Tammy Carter and Petrina Nicklin earlier this month. We understand that the canteen is an important part of the school but we want to ensure that we recruit the best person for the job; someone with sufficient experience, a great attitude and a commitment to providing healthy, nutritious and affordable food for the school community.

We have advertised the position on Seek (click here to view the ad) and it has been included in this Natter for your reference. We will also advertise on social media sites. Parents are, of course, welcome to apply for the position.

We anticipate that the canteen will remain closed for the duration of the current term.

We are in the process of forming a Canteen Subcommittee and, to-date, have three parents who have indicated their interest. We will provide more detail about this sub-committee on the agenda for the next meeting.

I look forward to seeing you at our next meeting – which will be held as soon as regulations allow – but in the meantime, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

 Warmest regards,

Brooke Logan

Calling all Chicken Champions

A Parliament initiative, started last year and continued into this, is the proposal to build a chicken coop on the western side of the school.

Students and Parliament ministers believe having chickens in the school would help recycle organic waste, produce fresh eggs to use in the canteen and add real-life context to learning programs.

For this initiative to be successful, we need some committed families to become our ‘Chicken Champions’ to coordinate the build of the coop and care for the chickens on the weekends and during the holiday periods.

It you are interested in supporting this initiative, please email the school attention ‘Chicken Champions’ newport-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au

An expression of interest form will be distributed to interested students and is also attached latter in this Natter.
