Dear Parents, Carers and Community,

This week, we recognise and thank our School Administrative and Support Staff (SASS) as part of SASS Recognition Week. Our SASS staff play an important role in the school community. Virtual Open Day video

I hope you have had an opportunity to view our Open Day video. The students and teachers have put in many hours of work to open classrooms up to our school community using a virtual approach. Thank you to Mr Crisafulli and Mr Destefano for all your work. We hope you enjoy the experience!

Congratulations Mr Destefano!

As many of you would be aware, Mr Destefano is now a permanent member of our teaching staff after completing the merit selection process and becoming the successful candidate. Mr Destefano continues to make extraordinary contributions to the teaching and learning of our students. On behalf of the whole school community, congratulations Mr Destefano! We wish you a long and successful career in Public Education.

New & updated guidelines from the Department of Education on school operations

In the last week, we have sent our parents and carers two items of correspondence regarding amendments to the operations of schools – one item was a document issued by the Department of Education. The second item was a document outlining how our school will be operating, in light of these changes. We have attached the second document to this newsletter for those who may have missed it.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Hopefully you have received the information regarding our Parent Teacher Interviews this term. In order to abide by the Department’s guidelines, all interviews will be conducted via telephone conference. Please contact the office if you require further information on how to make a booking.

Updated Department of Education Guidelines on Activities and Operations at Concord Public School - 24 August 2020

In light of the Department of Education’s new updated guidelines released on Monday, 17th August 2020, additional safety measures have been put in place in order to minimise the risk of spread of the Covid-19 virus. Our school has made various changes to its operations in order to reflect these guidelines.

Playground

“Where possible, students will stay within their relevant cohort group (i.e. class, year group, or stage) for all learning activities within their school in order to limit close contacts to the relevant student cohort.” This includes the playground during lunch and recess. Students have been allocated designated play areas where they will play in stage groups. The multi-purpose court, grass area and playground equipment will be accessible to all students during the week on a rotational basis, where they will play in year/stage groups.

Choir

“All group singing (choirs) and/or other chanting activities, as well as the use of wind instruments in group settings, are not permitted.”

Therefore, our choir groups will no longer be operating this term.

Scripture and Ethics Classes

Classes will operate in stage or year groups.

Sports in School Australia

Lessons were put on hold for 2 weeks to allow the providers time to comply with the Department’s new measures. All activities will be conducted in year groups and all equipment will be cleaned by their staff prior to any activities commencing. Equipment will also be cleaned in between each year group and before a new group commences. Our school has now received the Sports in Schools Australia Safety Plan, reflecting the Department’s guidelines and classes will recommence on Wednesday 2nd September.

Tennis

Lessons will be conducted in year/stage groups and all rackets/equipment will be cleaned between each group.

Chess

As chess involves students from Kindergarten to Year 6, classes have been cancelled until further notice.

Community Users

Community Users are now permitted to use the school facilities. Before each group recommences, they must have a Covid Safety Plan in place. I have met with every Community User to explain the Department’s safety requirements. For the groups that have recommenced, they have agreed to adhere to the Department’s guidelines and we have copies of their Covid Safety Plan.

Parents/Carers & Visitors on School Grounds

Parents, carers and all non-essential visitors are not permitted on the school grounds, with the exception of picking up sick children, signing-in children arriving late to school or early pick-ups. Any parent, carer or visitor coming on to the school premises, even for 1 or 2 minutes to drop off a jumper, hat, form or lunch will be required to fill-in a Visitor’s Form, as per the Department’s requirements.

Interschool Activities

Activities involving the competition between schools, such as debating, will be conducted via zoom.

What to do when your child in unwell

All teachers and staff continue to exercise vigilance to ensure the safety of all students and staff.

In accordance with advice from NSW Health, parents and carers are reminded NOT to send children to school if they are unwell, even if they have the mildest flu-like symptoms. Schools will make arrangements for students who present as unwell or have flu like symptoms to be sent home.

As advised by NSW Health, the school will strongly encourage parents to arrange to have their child tested through their local medical practitioner or one of the Covid-19 clinics, for even mild flu-like symptoms.

Students and staff with flu like symptoms who do get tested for Covid-19 will need to provide a copy of a negative Covid-19 test result before being permitted to return to school.

If your child is unwell and you are not sure what to do, please call the school for advice, before you send them to school. We are more than happy to help where possible.

As always, please do not hesitate in contacting the school if you have any concerns or queries. We are only a phone call away. Or if you prefer, please send an email to the school’s email address –

Check-in Assessment

Year 3 and Year 5 students will participate in a new reading and numeracy check-in assessment in Term 3, 2020.

The Check-in assessment is a NSW Department of Education online reading and numeracy assessment available to support schools to assess and monitor Year 3 & Year 5 student learning following the period of learning from home.

The Check-in assessments can supplement existing school practices to identify how students are performing in literacy and numeracy and to help teachers tailor their teaching more specifically to student needs.

  • The assessment will be scheduled for our Year 5 students from 17 August to 4 September 2020.
  • The assessment will be scheduled for our Year 3 students from 21 September to 23 October 2020

Students with disability may receive the same level of support during the assessment that they would normally receive in the classroom.

From the Office

Entering onto the School Grounds During School Hours

Please ensure that you come into the office, if you need to give something to your child, or if they have forgotten to bring something to school. The office staff are more than happy to pass the item on.

If you need to see your child or pass on a message to them, the office staff can help with that too. We encourage parents to allow us to pass on messages during break times, so that your child's learning is not interrupted. All visitors must sign-in at the office and wear a visitor's sticker. This is to ensure the wellbeing and safety of all.

Payment

When making a payment online you can only pay up to 3 DAYS before the due date of the payment. This is due to online transactions taking 48 hours to process.

Other payment methods such as cash or cheque can also be sent to the front office and placed in the blue box labelled “School Post”.

Please note that we do not accept online payment for uniform or canteen orders. Please see the uniform or canteen order  form for payment details.

Permission Notes

If you have more than one child we need to have a note for each child, not all on one note please.

Change of Contact/Address details

Please inform the office immediately if you have changed your contact or address details, so we can contact you in case of an emergency.

Bicycle and Scooter Guidelines

If you give permission for your child to ride a bicycle or scooter to and/or from school, and store it on the school grounds, please carefully read and sign the ‘Bicycle and Scooter Guidelines’ document (obtained from the Front Office). These signed forms are to be returned to the office. Once we have received the signed documentation, the school will record that your child has permission from you to ride to school. Please see Mrs Vermiglio or the office for details.

Lost Property

All lost property is now kept in the office.

All students have been informed of this and are all reminded to put their name on their hats, jackets, jumpers, all lunch/recess containers and drink bottles.
