Mount Ousley Public School News

A small school with big opportunities.

Term 4 Week 1 2020, Friday 16 Oct

Principal's Report

Welcome to term 4! I hope that all our families have had a restful and fun holiday and are ready for what will be a fun filled and very busy term.

I am very happy to announce that restrictions on visitors in schools are beginning to reduce and we are now able to have parents on schools grounds for a number of specific purposes. We are looking forward to returning to the connected community environment that we have enjoyed in the past. At the moment, as I am sure you can appreciate, there are still strict processes in place to ensure the safety of parents, students and staff, I ask that all community members adhere to these as outlined in the Covid Update section below.

We are currently taking enrolments for students in kindergarten next year. If you know of families who have not made their choice as to where they will be sending their child, and they are in our local area, please encourage them to get in touch with us so we are able to introduce them to our school and have them enrolled in time for the Kindergarten Orientation program.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all of the parents and students who supported the Crazy Hair Day and Lemonade Stand Empathy projects that took place on the last day of term 3. Both these initiatives raised approximately $300 each, and these funds have been donated to support Cancer Council and Homeless Hub.

This level of generosity will go a long way to supporting these charities.

Reminders:

As the weather warms up it is extremely important that all students are wearing either a school wide brim or bucket hat that is clearly labelled with their name. Bringing a water bottle that is able to be refilled throughout the day will also help your child to stay cool and well hydrated.

Please keep us up to date with explanations if your child is away from school. A skoolbag, SeeSaw or phone message, even a written note are all ways you can let us know why your child/ren have been away.

I look forward to a fantastic term of learning, connecting and celebrating.

COVID UPDATE

On the 8th of October new guidelines were issued to schools outlining changes in operations for term 4. I am very please to inform you of the following changes.

  • Parent run uniform shops are able to operate with scheduled opening times and rosters.
  • Parent assisted reading groups are able to resume with a restriction on numbers and a clear roster of people and times.
  • Excursions are permitted following Covid guidelines.
  • Year 6 graduations are able to be planned.
  • End of year presentations are able to be planned, however there will be a restriction on the number of people who are able to attend these. We are awaiting further advice as the term progresses.
  • Kindergarten Orientation programs are able to resume with restrictions.
  • Band is able to resume with additional safety measures.

In all cases, visitors to the school must sign the Visitor Acknowledgement Form, be healthy and free of any symptoms and use hand sanitiser and good hand hygiene while on site.

We are all looking forward to these changes and to see you again.

MOPS MEGA BOOK SWAP

The MOPS Mega Book Swap will be held next week, during Book Week, on Wednesday 21st of October. We are asking that you bring a gold coin donation to swap for a book on the day. All money raised will go to the Indigenous Literacy Foundation to support our First Nations students to read and write.

Date and Time

From Thursday, October. 22nd

Information

School Photos will be taking place on Thursday next week, 22 October.  Please make sure your chil/ren are dressed in full school uniform for these photos. As previously mentioned the class photo will be replaced with a composite design to comply with Covid restrictions. There will be no whole school photo this year as this does not comply.

From the Library and Book Week

This term our Library Borrowing Power Challenge will continue. The race is on to see which class will be the first to borrow 100 books!

Next Week is Book Week!

On Friday 23rd October, we will be holding our Book Week activity day. With students in costume, we will be taking class groups into the outdoor learning area, where they will be videoed having their own mini parade. The theme for this year is “Curious Creatures, Wild Minds”, so expect to see students popping up from behind trees and bushes! These parades will be turned into mini movies, which will then be shared on our various social media platforms for you to enjoy. The rest of the day will involve students completing various activities based around this year’s shortlisted books. Lots of photos will be taken, which we will also share with you. We are sorry that we can’t have you with us in person, but hope that you will enjoy the virtual experience.

Kindergarten Orientation

We are very please to announce that we are able to put plans in place for Kindergarten Orientation. This year we will be holding 3 sessions where students can come and explore our school, meet their buddies and find out about all the wonderful things that we have in store for them next year. In previous years this has been coupled with a parent information session held in the library, this is unable to go ahead this year. Instead we will have a short parent meeting on the basketball court where there will be an opportunity to meet the principal, gather information packs and ask a few questions. This is limited to 15 minutes due to current restrictions. All families are asked to enter via the McGrath Street gate where our student leader will meet you and guide you to the basketball court. The sessions will run from 9:30am - 11:30am on Friday 6th, 13th and 20th of November.

EMPATHY PROJECTS

MOPS MAPS

Our Empathy Project is called MOPS MAPS. MAPS is the first letter of all our names (Mara, Amber, Penelope and Savannah). We decided to raise money for the Wollongong Homeless Hub. We wanted to raise money because we were so grateful for the things we had and we realised that there were some people out there that didn’t have any home or food like we do. So we decided to have a crazy hair day and everybody in our school went with crazy hair and they had to bring in a gold coin. We raised $272 from the gold coins. We would like to commend Sienna.M, Steo, Amy, Ruby, Mrs Hamers, Sage, Zen, Jamie, Milla and Pedro for their creative and crazy hair. We would like to happily thank the people that participated in crazy hair day!

By Mara, Amber, Penelope and Savannah.

Lemonade Stand for Cancer

Hi. Our Empathy Project was Lemonade Stand for Cancer.

We wanted to raise money for the Cancer Council because we want to help kids with cancer by donating money for doctors to find a cure.

We raised $302.50. We are all really proud of our achievement. We want to thank all of the students who bought our lemonade.

Canteen News

Our Canteen has reopened and the students are very excited about ordering their lunch.

As with most things this year, there is a slight change to the way in which lunches are delivered to students. So that there is not a large crowd of students congregating in the canteen area, all lunches will be picked up by the class canteen helpers and taken to classrooms for eating time. To assist in making this a smooth process we are asking that the class name is clearly written on each lunch order bag. before they are dropped off at the canteen.

Canteen will continue to operate on Monday, Wednesday and Friday of each week. Remember it does rely on parent helpers, so don't be shy, and donate a few hours a week to ensure our canteen can remain open.

Please contact Amanda Lawler on 0410587499 to lock in a day.

Uniform Shop

The uniform shop will begin operating again this term. All uniform orders can be sent to the office and orders will be filled and given to students each Tuesday. If you have any questions relating to uniforms or donations of quality second hand uniforms please contact the office.
