From the Principal- Ms Boyd

Term 3 has been a busy term for everyone. The Senior students are currently working towards completing their ASDAN files for Towards Independence: E-safety, My Future Choices, Developing Communication Skills Progression, Sex and Relationships and Work Awareness in preparation for external moderation in November. Middle students are working towards completing ASDAN Key Steps, New Horizon and Transition challenge modules. They are compiling their files and parents are welcome to view them during teacher parent meetings.

The Senior School bushrangers camp at Bickley Outdoor Recreation Camp was a great success. Despite the rain staff and students had a wonderful time doing all the activities and sleeping in tents, which was a first for some of the students.  Thank you to all the staff who made this event possible by volunteering their time to work after hours and stay overnight. There will photos and updates on Facebook.

Well done to all the students who participated in the recent combined AESC/ASHS Sports Carnival. Congratulations to the year group trophy winners. Thank you to all the parents who attended on the day to support their child.

Year 7 transition has commenced with some of our other staff going to Gwynne Park ESC and local primary schools on Fridays to get to know the year 6 students who will be attending our school next year. The students currently in year 9 have already begun their transition to Senior School and are getting to know the staff and students.  In year 10 student are enrolled in ASDAN and SCSA courses which will ensure they are eligible for a WASSA, The Western Australian Statement of Student Achievement when they graduate from school.

On behalf of the staff I would like to wish you all a happy and safe holiday!

Bushfire Zone Information

Bushfire Zone Register

The Department of Education (The Department) is committed to maximising the safety of its students and staff. Armadale ESC has been added to the Bushfire Zone Register. Inclusion on this register means that the school may be required to invoke a pre-emptive closure on a day for which a Catastrophic Fire Danger Rating (FDR) has been declared for the City of Armadale in which our school is located. A Catastrophic FDR means that if a fire starts, it is likely to be uncontrollable, inpredictable and fast moving.

What does this mean for our school?

When given advance warning by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) that a Catastrophic FDR has been forecast for a given day, the Deputy Director General, Schools may direct the pre-emptive closure of Armadale ESC. If the school receives such a directive, you will be informed of the possible planned closure by a letter sent home with your child. Parents of students absent on the day this letter is sent home will be contacted by telephone, so please ensure the school has up to date contact details for you.

In the intervening period between the delaration of the pre-emptative closure and the day of planned closure, DFES will keep the Department informed of any change to the FDR forecast for the declared day. The final decision to pre-emptively close the school will be confirmed with the principal no later than 4:30pm on the day before the planned closure. If the forecast changes after that deadline, the closure will stand, regardless of improvements to the weather conditions later in the afternoon of the day before the planned closure or overnight. The intention is tto limit confusion or uncertainty for parents and to allow you ample time to make alternative child care arrangements.

Parents will be advised of the confirmation of closure, or its reversal, by a note sent home with your children on the day before the planned closure. Again, Parents of students absent on this day will be contacted by telephone.

How will i know when the school is reopening?

It is anticipated that the school will typically only be required to close fo a single day at a time, however this will depend on the weather. You will receive an SMS text to advise you whether the school will reopen the day after the planned closure, or whether it will remain closed. The school website will contain a notice to advise you of the current status of the school closure and when it is expected to reopen.

I ask that you monitor local media for current information about fire danger raitings and notification of schools reopening. Staying tuned to ABSC local radio in your locality is advisable. You can also check with DFES on 13 DFES (13 33 37) ir www.dfes.wa.gov.au and Emergency WA website www.emergency.wa.gov.au. Alternatively, you can email sandra.boyd@education.wa.edu.au, text me on 0455 028 856 ir ring Regional Education Office on 08 9336 9563.

Please contact the school on 9497 6435 if you have any questions about planned closures during the bushfire season.

MS1- Miss Ash

In a blink of eye, we are at the end of Term 3! How quick has that gone by? MS1 has had a very busy term. We have had a huge STEM focus this term thanks to Miss Leah and Mr Walker who have been in our class for most of the term. We have been experimenting with making oobleck, squishy circuits, Dash & Dots as well as bee bots. We were given a huge challenge to try and move our robots (Dash & Dots) through an obstacle course in the Undercover Area! This tied in very well with Science Week that ran though

Our PBS focus for this term is “We listen to feedback and adjust our behaviour.” Miss Ash made it easier for us by breaking it into two parts; the first half of the term we have been working on listening to feedback. We did our very best and even earned an extra reward – we had Pizza Day on Thursday the 15th of August!

MS3A- Mr Lush

It has been another busy term for the MS3A classroom. For 5 weeks the class went out to Minnawarra House in Armadale to participate in pottery classes. We made pinch pots, clay houses and Matthew made an excellent Godzilla!

Our market day went well and we made pot plants, vanilla slice, clay creations and chutney. We are now looking forward to the big market day at Kenwick Education Support Centre and we are learning how to sew produce bags with Mrs Sorenson to sell there.

For father’s day we had a Bunnings incursion where they came in and made toolboxes with us to fill with goodies for our dads while in woodwork we have been making model planes.

In sport we have been playing Tee ball with Mr Lush and we have also has our school sports carnival and the ESSN carnival. All the students did the school proud and put in an excellent effort. For cooking we have made some delicious schnitzels with Miss Ash while Mr G has been teaching us about finance such as mortgages and credit ratings. He also took us on a shopping trip into Armadale.

We are now looking forward to finishing off year 9 with a great fourth term.

SS2- Ms Jesionek

Recently in SS2 our students have been working extremely hard to achieve individual and whole class goals.

As part of our Enterprise we have been making lavender wheat bags, bath bombs, candles, aprons and reusable shopping bags which have been both extremely fun and successful. Our class students have also recently started planning our next enterprise venture (bees wax wraps) that will be packaged and on sale within the next few weeks. Another exciting project was preparing morning tea for Dale Cottages residence. Our students were very enthusiastic about the project and enjoyed making sausage rolls, sandwiches and cakes for our guests. We all had a great time enjoying food and company. We are looking forward to another successful term ahead full of hard work!!

SS4 - Ms Fleay

On Monday 5th and Tuesday 6th August, students from the Senior School visited Mary Carroll Wetland and participated in planting native seedlings in a large mulched area under a group of trees.

They had to dig deep into the mulch to access the soil, put a wetting agent into the hole and plant the seedlings.

Some students also assisted in raking and levelling earth near a new concrete border.

This planting was very timely as we are having fairly regular rain now so that the seedlings will be watered in, ensuring a good survival rate.

The recent rains have brought the water level of the lakes up to about adult chest height and the students and staff were able to view some of the birds that migrate to this area each year. As well as a variety of ducks and some ibis, the Monday group was lucky enough to see a black swan. The last time these students visited here in Autumn the lake beds were dry or only had a little bit of wet mud here and there. It was great to see the expanse of water and birdlife, approximately 35 species of which use this valuable wetland.

Many thanks to Ross Wylie of Landcare Gosnells for facilitating this activity and congratulations to the hard-working and appreciative students.

AESC Market Day

What a fabulous way to start the term, with the Armadale ESC Market Day celebration.

At Armadale Education Support Centre we strive to improve not only student knowledge but also their attitude, creativity and behaviours so they can become productive members of our community.

It was exciting to see all the energetic, vibrant young minds in action while buying, selling and giving out change. It was great to see the way the students conducted themselves responsibly and with such maturity while interacting with others.

We were all blown away with such a variety of beautifully designed and colourful products created by our students under the close supervision of our talented staff. Well done Armadale ESC!

Thank you to all parents and carers for supporting us during this event.

Focus on Ability Film Festival

The Focus on Ability Film Festival has received entries from 26 countries in 2019.

AESC Year 10 students participated in creating a short film this year.

Students from SS1 participated in making a short film focusing on their strengths and abilities. The short film called "Don't Assume" highlights how students can respond positively to what they actually like to do based on their interests. Niamh was director and script writer and worked along with a group of students to make it a successful Finalist of 2019. Well done SS1!

Senior School Camp

Young Writers Award

Congratulations Jemai for becoming a finalist in the Armadale Young Writers’ Awards. There were over 160 entrants in this competition and Jemai came in 3rd place in her category. This is a huge accomplishment! Jemai was presented with a trophy and a cash prize by the Mayor of Armadale. She is now a published author as the place getters stories have been published in a book that is available for sale at the Armadale library.
