Huskisson Public School

Husky Star Newsletter Week 8 Term 3 2020

From the School Leadership Team

What a busy week we have had here at Huskisson Public School. Our Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 students had their hearing tested using a new state of the art hearing app- Sound Scout. What a worthwhile program, as already a number of our little ones have been identified as having some difficulties in this area. Another wonderful example of how our school enables early intervention to create better learning opportunities for all. All students who participated will receive their reports in the coming weeks. We thank our school community for their on going support and commitment to learning.

We are super excited to announce that over the coming weeks we will be holding our athletics carnival. It will not look like it normally does, but it will have the same events. Students will work within their stage groups to compete in long jump, high jump, shot put and discus. In the final week of the term we are hoping to set up a track and head up to the oval to compete in our age races and some of those longer distanced races. This way our records will include 2020 and our students get the opportunity to shine and break some long-standing records. Unfortunately, parents will not be able to attend, but we promise to take lots of photos and share our fun and enthusiasm.

Remember school photos are next week. Please bring in your photo envelope, your beautiful school uniform and biggest smile.

Sun safety - Remember your wide brimmed hat for all outside play. If you need to order a new hat you can do so online.

Walk to school safely day

Today is walk to school safely day. We have had a number of parents who chose to park away from school and walk with their child to school, demonstrating how this can be done safely. With this fresh in our mind, we would like to remind all students that the only safe place to cross the road is at our flagged children's crossing areas.

Some of our senior students have been asked to walk down to meet their parents at the cinema in the afternoon. This is a great idea as our parking can be a little tricky. Please remind your child to walk around to the Watts Street flagged crossing area, where staff members will ensure that they cross the road safely. Thank you for your cooperation with this matter.

Bayswood Bus

During the past two weeks, we have been exploring the afternoon bus routes for our students. One of our dilligent parents telephoned to ask why there wasn't a safe pickup in Bayswood for our students on the morning bus route. We have been in contact with Nowra coaches to discuss this. They have stated that unless enough parents make contact with the bus company that routes cannot be changed. The afternoon bus route delivers students to the Bayswood bus stop, where students can safely walk home. In the morning they must wait on the main road for the bus, which many parents feel less comfortable with.

If this affects you, we ask that you contact us here at school, so that together we can work together at trying to find a good solution for our little people.

Are you packing your child enough food?

Over the last few weeks we have noticed many of our children are extra hungry. They are possibly going through a growth spurt and need some extra bits and pieces to get them through the day. Each child should have:

  • 1-2 pieces of fruit
  • a snack of biscuits, yoghurt, cheese or something similar.
  • a lunch that may include a sandwich, wrap, roll or something that has some longer release of energy.

Remember to cut up your child's fruit into smaller, more manageable pieces as this saves staff having to do it for them.

Currently our school are supplementing a number of children, who are extra hungry. Please check in with your child to make sure they have enough food to eat, as we are all growing super quickly.

Tournament of Minds

Winners will be announced this weekend online! The final button that set in motion all our TOM team’s hard work was pressed on Tuesday when mountains of paperwork and one spectacular 5 minute film was launched into cyberspace for judging by the Tournament of Minds panel.  What follows now is a waiting game and on Sunday at 4pm the team will find out just how spectacular their creation was. The team of Keshy, Evie, Olivia, Kate, Tahlia, Abby and Chi will join many other teams through a virtual portal for the presentation ceremony in the hope that their solution to the challenge will win top honours.  Good luck Team Husky, no matter what happens you are winners in our book!

Library News

Early Stage 1 and Stage 1

Everyone is a filmmaker! Well, not everyone, but the students in Mrs Jenkins, Mrs Rosskelly, Miss Musson and Ms Loui’s classes are certainly well on their way.  They are now in the thick of making  mini-movies using the Clips program on their iPads. “Impressive” is the word that comes to mind when looking at what they are doing and how well they are remembering their preliminary lessons. What a great way to show off the information they have been learning in their study of the bug world.

Stage 2 Tech Heads

Rotations during our Stage 2 Tech Tuesdays are going really well.  Check out the photos of some of our Tech Heads in action.  Also, congratulations go to some of our Hyper Typers for their achievements this week.  Baylee  continues to make great progress with her average of  9 wpm at 97% accuracy whilst Imogen  is keeping with her form at 20 wpm with 97% accuracy.  Tilly  is our Hyper Typer of the week by smashing out 26 wpm at 99% accuracy. Well done to all! Don’t forget to practise at home by logging onto Typing.com, using your student google account then hitting the blue “Log in with Google”  tab.

Stage 3 Bushfire Plan Project

Storyboarding is filmmaker terminology for making a roadmap of the journey that a film will take you on. The Stage 3 students are really learning what it is like in the filming industry by preparing their roadmaps for their bushfire planning project.  Next week they will practice some of their scenes on location.  Good luck Years 5 and 6, these films are taking shape nicely.

Finally, it is not too early to start thinking about our Book Fair celebrations in Term 4.  Books from Scholastic will arrive at school the week of 23rd November with buying options the following week. Our annual parade of characters will be held on Wednesday 2nd December and it is not too early to start thinking about what costume would be best suited for the day! In the meantime, keep reading and exploring the never-ending world of books. Mrs Hanson

Gardening For Sustainability - Week 8

“I wish I had a garden” remarked a Stage 3 student.

I heard this amongst the conversation some of the stage 3 students were having while working in the vegetable garden. How lucky we are that our students have the opportunity to develop their skills in living sustainably, while benefiting from the emotional wellbeing developed through spending time outside, working collaboratively and connecting to their place through gardening.

This week the students in upper primary learnt about the importance of rebuilding the soil - topping up the raised garden beds in preparation for the next season of fruit and vegetables. The children quickly realised they needed to cooperate and work together in order to transport the soil to the garden beds using the loaded wheel barrows. They identified emerging tomato seedlings by scent and appearance amongst some of the weeds and learnt the importance of letting some plants go to flower so that the seeds can be collected for next season. Sarah (Year 5) and Ashton (Year 4) volunteered their lunchtime and continued helping in the garden (Thank you to you both for your enthusiasm and assistance). In the classroom, students from stage 2 used a branching key to investigate the leaf litter and compost materials under the magnifying glass. Students identified some of the invaluable invertebrates whose necessary work often goes unnoticed in the garden.
