Dear Parents & Community Members,

Unfortunately, COVID continues to disrupt our “normal” school operations.  This is in spite of the fact that a number of processes and events have returned to the planner, the number of students and staff missing school due to illness is still having a significant impact.  I continue to openly endorse and appreciate the entire community for the manner in which our school has been supported.  I thank teachers for supporting children at home and I thank parents/carers for being so conscious of the health of children.  Fingers crossed we are all well soon.

We concluded the current NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) regime this week following an extension of the testing “window” due to the number of children who missed an assessment owing to illness or associated reasons.  My thanks to Miss Cole for her coordination and all other staff for assisting with the process.  While 2022 results will be compromised, this process does provide schools with an idea of progress within limited parameters.

Finally, thanks to all coaches and supporting community members for assisting with our interschool sports teams.  I am immensely proud of our teams – the effort, attitude and teamwork has been a pleasure hear or witness.  While the positive results are important, it’s the E.A.T. that matters.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

Join the adventure!

We encourage you to join us in unlocking the wonderful world of reading for your children.  Help them to join the Premier’s Reading Challenge.  Will they fly above the clouds, dive into the ocean or jump into a rocket ship?  All students from Kindergarten to Year 10 are challenged to read 12 books by 9 September 2022.

You can help your children sign up via the website, choose their own avatar and log all the books they read over the course of the Challenge.  Weekly prizes will be awarded to students who log a book that week, with major prizes drawn when the challenge ends.

Books don’t have to be in English – children are encouraged to read books in their first language.

There are extraordinary tourism prizes to be won each week.

Sign up your children on the website to begin their magical journey.

For your convenience, attached below is a printable version of the Reading Record.  The record can be dropped into the labeled box in the office when completed.

Winter Sport Reports

Glengarry PS v Carine PS:  Friday, May 13

Volleyball A

Unfortunately we lost our game against Carine. It was a close one because we only lost by 1 set! Our best player was Summer because she was really good at catching and tapping.

Sara

Volleyball B

Our game against Carine was really close. We lost 2 sets to 1. Layla and Luke were the players of the day because Layla did some really good serves and Luke did some great catches.

Anushka

Football

We had an amazing win against Carine today! The final score was 101 against 24. Nate and Jordan played a great game because they both scored goals and they did good clearances and accurate passes.

Paul

Soccer

Unfortunately we lost against Carine but we tried our best. During the game Peter defended really well and Lucas did really well attacking. Hopefully next week we can have a win!

                                                                                                             Peter & Tyler

Netball A

We played a great game against Carine and ended up winning 32 against 8. Bailey and Misty were our best players on the court. Misty got some amazing goals and got into the circle really quickly. Bailey played a real honest game and played really well in the A team.

Gracie

Netball B

Can you believe that we only lost by 2 points! Laila and Imogen were our best players because they smashed it. Well done to all the players for such a good game.

Mia

Glengarry PS v Duncraig PS:  Friday, May 20

Volleyball A

Unfortunately we lost our game against Duncraig. Our best player was Romy because she got all her serves over the net. Hopefully we do better next week.

Yasmin & Zara

Volleyball B

We tried our best but unfortunately lost our game against Duncraig today. Hana did amazing serves and really paid attention to the game.

Isla & Layla

Football

We played an amazing game today and easily won. Paul was our best player because he did an amazing job at marking, finding open people and long kicks. I also liked how Paul had an opportunity to kick a goal but was unselfish and passed it onto another player.

Sam and Paul

Soccer

This week we played Duncraig PS and it was our best game yet! We tied against them with a score of 1 all. Yesith was the player of the day because he did at least 10 slide tackles and scored our only goal. Rhys also did a great job blocking a lot of the goals.

Dylan & Cooper

Netball A

Amelia and Citie were our best players as they went for every ball and always gave their best effort.  Our team won by 25 goals with the final score being 38 to 13.

Misty

Netball B

We had a great game against Duncraig. We won by 35 goals so we were super happy! Charlee was an unselfish player and shared the ball in the goal circle so her team mates could also score a goal even though she could have scored it.

Mrs Barrett

Wonderful World of Work!

In Room One this week we have been learning the Model Text "Alfie's Star".  As part of our Talk4Writing programme we wrote a retell of this story and then read it with our friends.

Kobi, Alex and Hartley went to the office to share their amazing writing.  Mrs Mac said, "we are all stars!".

Health and Hygiene

Is your child feeling unwell?

If your child is unwell with cold and flu symptoms, please keep them at home and consider checking in with your GP if symptoms don't resolve in a few days.

Healthy WA also recommends seeking a COVID test for cold and flu symptoms.  See links below for more info.

Department of Health LINK

DoE LINK

As directed by our guidelines, we will ask for your child to be collected if they are displaying cold symptoms such as a cough, runny nose, fever etc.

We have a student at school who is immunocompromised.  This means they can potentially become gravely ill even when contracting a common cold/virus.  Please be mindful of sending students to school when they are unwell, as they may spread their infection.  Please speak with your GP/health professional and see the information in the links above re: advice about keeping your child at home when unwell.

Prospective Foster Carers Needed

The Department of Communities, Child Protection are looking for prospective foster carers.

When a child or young person is taken into care, they need a safe and supportive place to stay. Foster care is often the preferred choice for such children and young people.  Foster Care means a child lives with a different family who aims to provide them with the care and support by offering a safe, secure and nurturing home.

The Joondalup Child Protection Office are holding a foster carer information session on Wednesday, May 18th at 6pm for any prospective carers.

The session will be held at 8 Davidson Terrace, Joondalup.

If you have any questions, are interested in fostering or would like more information; please email Jackie Ireland: Jackie.Ireland@communities.wa.gov.au
