A FEW WORDS FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Welcome to term 3. It is lovely to be back and to see the children settle into the learning with ease. It is especially exciting to welcome our new Receptions in 7 West to begin their learning journey at Hallett Cove East Primary

Olympic Games

Hopefully you are in the full grip of Olympic fever and enjoying the achievements of the world’s athletes. Sometimes the biggest lessons about life can be learnt through sport, the highs and the lows of competing present many character-building challenges. We marvel in each athlete’s success but often it’s what people don’t see, away from the bright lights of competition that determines success; training, persistence, dedication, failure, hard work, setbacks, disappointment, discipline… you get the picture. It is through these moments that true character is formed. The ups and downs of athletes present a great opportunity for children and adults to learn lifelong lessons of personal best and what it takes to be successful, whether on the sporting field, at work or in life itself.

Term 3 Events

This term we have a number of exciting events planned. We would love to see the HCEPS community join with us for these key whole school events:

  • Reading workshops: 7th August
  • Wellbeing afternoon showcasing The Resilience Project: 14th September
  • Book week (parade day) 22nd August on the theme of ‘Reading is Magic’
  • Sports Day 27th September

Our staff and students work particularly hard to bring these events together and we hope many of you are able to join us! Please note that we will be holding a student free day on Friday 6th September to continue our focus on Effective Learners, this time in Mathematics.

2024 NAPLAN

Parents of year 3 and year 5 children will receive 2024 NAPLAN reports next week. NAPLAN is a point in time test and gives us an indication of our student’s achievement progress and areas for further development. As a staff we will spend time considering the schoolwide results and look for areas to further support our students in their learning. We will notify parents of when NAPLAN results are available for collection from the front office.

Wellbeing Grant

We are very pleased to announce that we have been successful in gaining a significant financial grant to further develop House 4 as an inclusive and safe space for our students. I would like to acknowledge the work of Ellie Burford in writing the application and aligning with our vision for the wellbeing of students at Hallett Cove East. We look forward to utilising the grant to further resource the area.

OSHC Educator's Day

Wednesday was OSHC Educator’s Day. It is important to acknowledge the fantastic work of our OSHC staff in providing creative and innovative learning and care opportunities for children before and after school and during vacation care. Our OSHC service is a very caring and kind environment and our staff are carefully selected for their ability to positively impact and influence the lives of our children. Thank you for all you do in our school community.

New Landscaping Area

Hopefully you have been through the school and seen the new landscaped area near house 9. It looks fantastic and we can’t wait to open it up for children to use in the next couple of weeks. We are thinking about other works around the school garden areas and ways we can utilise our spacious garden areas.

With regards

Matthew Chapman

Principal

A FEW WORDS FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

It is hard to believe we are already in Term 3. Two weeks into the term and already so many wonderful opportunities for our students, staff and families at Hallett Cove East Primary School.

Phonics Screening Check 2024

In South Australia, the Phonics Screening Check for Year 1 students is a brief assessment designed to evaluate young learners' phonics skills and their ability to decode words.

1.     Purpose: The check aims to identify students who may need additional support with phonics to improve their reading skills. It's a preventive measure to help catch potential reading difficulties early.

2.     Content: The assessment includes a series of tasks where students are asked to read a mix of real and pseudo-words (nonsense words). The real words assess their ability to apply phonics knowledge to familiar vocabulary, while the pseudo-words test their ability to decode unfamiliar words using phonics rules.

3.     Format: The check is administered one-on-one between a teacher and student.

4.     Timing: It is administered in term 3 for Year 1 students, giving teachers a chance to provide additional support if needed before students move on to more complex reading tasks in Year 2.

5.     Outcome: The results help teachers understand each student’s phonics skills and determine if they require targeted interventions. It also informs future teaching strategies and helps track progress over time.

Overall, the Phonics Screening Check is an important tool in South Australia’s approach to ensuring that early literacy skills are developed effectively, supporting students’ reading development from a young age.

Reading Workshop for R-2 parents/ carers

At Hallett Cove East Primary School, we are excited to be holding two sessions in week 3 for a Reading Workshop for parents of students in Reception to Year 2.

During the sessions, we will provide an overview of how students learn to read, how we teach reading at Hallett Cove East Primary School and strategies to support your child with reading at home. Parents/carers will receive handouts with key points and resources and have the opportunity to ask questions and share experiences.

If you are a parent/carer of a Reception - year 2 please ensure you book into a session via Audiri. There will be a 9:00 session and a 5:30 session (both the same content).

We look forward to working with you to support your child’s reading development.

Book Week 2024- Week 5

Book Week is approaching at Hallett Cove East Primary School, and we're gearing up for an exciting celebration filled with activities each day. Our theme this year is "Reading is Magic," highlighting the enchanting world of books and storytelling. A special highlight will be our Dress-Up Parade and Assembly, scheduled for Thursday in Week 5. Students and staff are encouraged to come dressed as their favourite book characters, and the parade will be followed by an engaging assembly featuring book-related activities and performances. We will also be having a special lunch on Tuesday linking in with Mem Fox ‘Possum Magic’. You are able to order the special lunch on Qkr.

We look forward to a magical week of celebrating the joy of reading and encouraging a love for books throughout our school community.

Lunchtime Activities

This term, Hallett Cove East Primary School is offering a range of engaging lunchtime activities designed to enrich students' learning and creativity. Staff have organized a variety of experiences, including art drawing, wool craft, and LEGO building, allowing students to explore their artistic and imaginative sides. For those interested in strategy and collaboration, board games are available, while gardening provides a hands-on opportunity to connect with nature. Additionally, Genki Kids activities promote Japanese culture, and sports games offer a chance for students to stay active and enjoy friendly competition. These diverse activities aim to make lunchtimes both enjoyable and educational for all students.

We are looking forward to an exciting term ahead.

Kind regards,

Robyn Physick
