Principal's Message

Dear Community

As Term 1 quickly approaches its conclusion, I would like to congratulate students, staff and parents of the Scarborough Primary School community for the enthusiasm and positive energy that they have brought to our school this term.

Our students have come a long way in their academic, social and emotional learning through engagement in activities based around a carefully balanced range of strategies including intentional play, explicit instruction and inquiry-based learning.

These activities would not have such a positive impact on student learning without the dedicated and thoughtful input from our amazing teaching staff and engaged and supportive parent community. Staff at Scarborough PS go above and beyond in their planning for our students and the support received from parents who volunteer in classrooms and support events are greatly appreciated.

Parking disruptions during Weeks 9 and 10

For the next two weeks, the school carpark will be closed to allow for a section of capital works to be completed on the roof of the Room 8/canteen portion of the building. This is likely to impact greatly on the already limited parking opportunities for staff. Unfortunately, this also coincides with the Aussies Surf Lifesaving Championships which will be held at Scarborough this year in Week 9, also limiting parking opportunities at Deanmore Square, our usual overflow option.

If any families live within a 5 minute walk of the school, and are willing to ‘adopt a teacher and their car’ for a week could you please contact either Robyn Smith or myself to let us know. Whilst some staff are able to car pool or select active or public transport options that week, for many this is not an option. Your support in offering them a parking spot would be greatly appreciated!

School Site Closure during the School Holidays

Another round of asbestos removal will take place during the school holidays. This means that the entire school site including the oval, playground and basketball courts will be closed for the duration of the holidays. Signs will be posted as a reminder and a SkoolBag notification will be sent when the site is cleared for entry again.

ANZAC Service

It was interesting to reflect this morning, that this time last year, our ANZAC Service was an over the air event, with students participating from their classrooms and the choir pre-recording their contributions. So, we are pleased to announce that this year the Scarborough Primary School ANZAC service will be held in front of the flag poles at 2:00 pm, Thursday 6 April.

We encourage parents and community members to also come and pay their respects to all service men and women past and present. Please keep an eye on SkoolBag for more details closer to the date.

Swim Carnival

Today, our Year 4-6 students had a fun afternoon showing off their swimming skills at the Claremont Aquatic Centre. Amongst all the fun, lots of points were earned for the Houses.

Congratulations to all staff and students involved for working together to make the event such a success. Watch out for photos and a list of champion girls and boys on SkoolBag and social media early next week.

Harmony Week

This week we celebrated Harmony Week throughout our school. Harmony Week celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. It is about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. The motto of Everyone Belongs, is one that is well embedded in the Scarborough community.

Students participated in a range of learning activities in their classrooms throughout the week. Some examples are listed below:

  • One class read the book 'A Hundred Thousand Welcomes'. This has welcome in different languages as well as encouraging us to welcome different cultures and all people. They looked at how to say hello in different languages and made a representation of themselves that had the colour of their national origins flag. These are displayed in the hallway entrance.
  • Another completed a small report of their family background and culture to display. They spent the week discussing their favourite foods, traditions and so forth before creating a wonderful display on the Room 2 pin up board. They also invited two of our Year 6 Bookworms to read and discuss an inclusivity themed book with them to promote discussion about our global links.
  • Yet another have been mapping where their families are from and discovered they have connections to Argentina, Wales, Germany, Sweden, New Zealand, Ireland, Brazil, The Netherlands, England, Scotland, Vietnam, The Philippines, indigenous Australia and South Africa.  Family members were invited to come and talk about their journey to Australia and Scarborough, their reasons for coming, what they love about Australia and their country of birth, what the major differences and similarities are, what life in Australia is like for them, basically exposing the students to backgrounds other than their own.

School Board

We have now filled the vacant Parent representative positions on the School Board. We would like to welcome Sarah Booth and Ashleigh Richards, both of whom have students in our current kindy cohort. We look forward to their contributions!

The next meeting is next Wednesday, 29 March at 6pm. We will be discussing the Capital Works project, the 2023 school budget and some beginning of the year procedures and practices.

Holiday Break

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all an extra relaxing school holiday break. I know many of you are going away and I hope you enjoy every minute of your time together as families, having time to relax and enjoy each other’s company.

Our staff will also be enjoying some much-needed downtime after a particularly busy term. Emails, including the main school email address may be monitored intermittently over the break, but you may not receive a reply until the school and front office reopens on Monday 24 April.

Have a great break everyone, and we look forward to seeing you back at the start of Term 2.

As always, if you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to call or email me on Sarah.Dawson@education.wa.edu.au.

P&C News

Hello SPS families

Thank you to all the families that have supported our upcoming school disco and design a plate events. The time period to return your forms has now closed. We have had a fantastic response to both events.

The school disco is next Friday 31 March, please remember parent supervision is required. There will be light snacks, drinks and glow sticks for sale, with it being cash only.

The design a plates are on schedule to be delivered in time for Mother’s Day next term.

A hot cross bun fundraising order form is coming home today. If you are looking to purchase some for the upcoming Easter break, they are being delivered on Tuesday 4th April (Week 10) and will be delivered to your child's classroom. A copy of the form can be downloaded below if it does not make it home.

There have been some questions about what activities the P&C is looking to support this year with the proceeds of our fundraising activities. Each year we have been supporting the school Mathletics subscription and the swimming bus required for swimming lessons in Term 4.

We are providing interschool t-shirts for the children to wear when representing the school at different events as well as some new music equipment for the school this year.

Mrs Dawson and the school are working on a wish list for when the new building opens later this year. Some of the ideas that are being discussed are new wobble chairs and Lego tables. If you have any other ideas of events or activities the P&C could look to support, please come along to our next meeting or talk to your P&C Committee.

REMINDER CANTEEN WEEK 9 CLOSED: Due to building works we will not be able to open the canteen in Week 9.
