BIDWILL Public School Newsletter

Term 2, Week 9

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Reports

With just over one week to go before the June/July holidays, teachers have been busy finalising student progress reports. The report only tells part of the story. It is a conversation you have with your child's teachers who can put everything into perspective. I would encourage all students to read through the report with you to work towards achieving some reasonable goals.

Attendance

As we are all aware this is the season for flus and colds.  As a result, students and staff have to take time off due to illness.  When we return from illness, it takes a little while to catch up on work and to touch base with our friends.  Can I please request that absences only be taken if your child is ill or needs to attend an appointment.

Each child was given a $50 voucher to be used towards excursions, uniforms and school based learning if they achieved 100% attendance.  Their names will be included in this newsletter. Congratulations to you all.

Let us please work together to ensure your child attends school.  Contact the school if there is anything the school can do to support your  family.

In our first newsletter next term, I will list the successful students that achieved 100% attendance in term 3.

Rugby League

I received a beautiful email from Mrs Jacqui Cox who accompanied three of our students who qualified to play with the Metropolitan West Team.

I have had the pleasure of being the U11’s Manager for Sydney West Rugby League and I would like to pass on my congratulations to Kordell, Alex and Cornelius for their outstanding behaviour and sportsmanship throughout the NSWPSSA Championships. You should be extremely proud of them and it’s great to see the boys win the NSW State Title. Let's please celebrate this success as a school.

Congratulations Boys!!

Rugby League Sponsorship

On behalf of the Bidwill Public School community, I would like to thank our two sponsors of our new Rugby League jerseys Top Kuts Barbershop and Sesame Pizza both from Hassall Grove . We can't thank you enough for your generosity and we look forward to our students wearing them soon.

World Environment Day

World Environment Day is the United Nations day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment.  Each World Environment Day is organised around a theme that draws attention to a particularly pressing environmental concern. The theme for 2019 is “Air pollution”.  Students at Bidwill PS, lead by the SRC Environment Action team, learnt more about air pollution and what we can do to reduce the impact we have on the environment.

On the 18th of June, the SRC Environment action group organised an Ornithologist to come Bidwill PS to teach us about Native Birds. Did you know there are 78 common species found in Sydney? We were lucky enough to see 16 of these species in our playground, including Masked Lapwing (plover), Red-Rumped Parrots, Ravens and Musk Lorikeets.

State of Origin Mufti Day

Our State of Origin fundraiser last week was a huge success with approximately $400 being raised. This will be used to purchase some new sports equipment for our students. A big thank you to all the wonderful parents and grandparents who generously donated treats and helped out at lunch time! The students looked fantastic wearing blue and maroon in support of the NSW and QLD State of Origin teams.

Click here for more photos from this day.

Woolworths Earn & Learn

Woolworths Earn & Learn finished on Tuesday 25th June and we would like to thank everyone who has helped us out by shopping at Woolworths and collecting those stickers. Now comes the fun part, the counting!

Obviously we want to count as many as we can, which is why we need your help to bring in all the stickers you may have collected and put them in out collection box. Every sticker counts. And the higher we can count, the more equipment we can get!

Thanks again for supporting our school.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data

The NCCD is an annual count of students who are being provided with adjustments to address disability. All Australian schools and approved authorities for schools participate in the NCCD each year.

Parents, guardians and carers have an important role in their child’s education. They work collaboratively with the school to ensure that the school understands their child’s needs and that appropriate adjustments are made to enable access to education.

To ensure this, students with disability may receive adjustments or support, depending on their functional needs, to access and participate in education.

Plastic Free July Challenge

Plastic Free July is an initiative to encourage people to be more aware of their plastic use and to create a cleaner world for generations to come.

The SRC Environmental Action group is setting up a challenge to all classes next week (Week 10, Term  2) to use minimal plastic within our lunchboxes. Students are encouraged to use reusable washable containers, rather than single-use plastic wrapping.

During literacy and science this week, students are participating in lessons on the impact that single-use plastic has on the environment and ways we can reduce this impact.

During math lessons in Week 10, each class will be tallying the plastic within their lunchboxes. Which class will win the challenge?

Have a look at some incredible poster designs by our students!

Premier's Spelling Bee Competition

Bidwill PS students will be competing in this year’s Premier’s Spelling Bee competition. The competition is designed to be a fun and educational way for primary school students to engage in spelling. The program includes activities to encourage all students to improve their vocabulary and spelling and to promote literacy skills in combination with the English K-6 Syllabus.

Bidwill PS will be holding a spelling bee during the beginning of term 3. Two students from Stage 2 and another 2 students from Stage 3 will be selected to represent our school in the regional finals.

Students who would like to compete in the Premier’s Spelling Bee competition need to see Mr Birdee and start practising.

2019 Premiers Challenge

NSW Premier's Reading Challenge 2019

Students in K-6 can participate in the 2019 Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) which is presented by the Department of Education. The challenge commenced on 4 March and aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature.

The PRC runs until 30 August 2019.

Keep your family healthier this winter

Colder days and chilly nights have set in and influenza (flu) season is here. The flu is much more serious than a cold and can be prevented.

What are the symptoms?

Flu symptoms range from mild to severe and can include:

  • fever and chills
  • cough, sore throat and runny or stuffy nose
  • muscle aches, joint pains, headaches and fatigue (feeling very tired)
  • nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea (more common in children than adults).

There are some simple steps you can take to help keep you and your family healthier this winter and stop the spread of flu.

Visit the DET information here.

Road safety on holidays

With the school holidays fast approaching, daily routines often change and everyone is a lot more relaxed. Different play locations and holiday destinations means changed traffic environments and new safety concerns.

To help keep our children safe, we all need to remember these key road safety messages in these new environments:

  • Point out the road safety differences and dangers.
  • The best way to keep children safe is to actively supervise them.
  • Talk to children about being a safe road user.
  • Stop, look, listen, think every time you cross the road.
  • It’s the law that everyone wears a helmet when riding a bike in a public place.
  • Click clack front ‘n back every person for every trip.

Families and children can discover more information at the Safety Town website.

NAIDOC 2019 - Voice, Treaty, Truth

Bidwill Public School will be celebrating NAIDOC week in Week 2 of Term 3. NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. More details to follow.

To emphasise the NAIDOC 2019 theme - Voice, Treaty, Truth, several of our students have been working on "Voice" within our Aboriginal Programs and students across the school have been learning to say warami (hello), yanu (goodbye), ngani (how are you?), and didjurigur (thank you) in Dharug, our local Indigenous language.

The NRL will be holding a 4 week after school program for children in the Bidwill community during the month of September at Bidwill Public School. The League Stars program appeals to the true nature of kids and their love of fun and play. This after school non-contact program is geared towards providing the perfect introduction to Rugby League for Primary School aged children. The skill-based program is suitable for all abilities. The focus is on learning the basics, meeting new friends and having lots of fun.
