The Widemere Whisper!

Week 10, Term 4

From the Principal

Dear Parents/Carers,

Well done Widemere on another fantastic year,

We have survived the 2022 school year! As I stated on our presentation day we have many people to thank including our superb students, terrific teachers, positive parents and admirable admin staff.

It was lovely having you all back in for our Christmas Concert and School Presentation day. Congratulations to our fantastic presentation award winners for their work ethic, their growth mindset and their academic efforts in 2022. They certainly deserved it.

I also congratulate and wish our fabulous Year 6 students a wonderful future full of amazing experiences. Our Year 6 students  have been outstanding members of our school community.

We wish them the best and urge them to make great choices, choose good friends and persevere in high school.

Students' last day at school this year is the 16th of December and school will be closed on the 19th and 20th as staff attended a series of twilight professional learning sessions throughout the year.

We are already looking forward to a wonderful 2023!

Year 1 to Year 6 students return Tuesday the 31st January 2023; and Kindergarten Friday the 3rd February 2023, after attending their Best Start assessment earlier in the week. It will be Kindergarten's first full day of big school.

Teachers will be working on the 27th and the 30th of January preparing for the return of students and collaborating during Staff Development Days.

I would like to wish all students, staff and parents the compliments of the season and a relaxing and safe holiday.

Student Leadership Team 2023

I would like to thank our 2022 leadership team Aiyeesha Tajjour, Banjo Roseman, Demi Spiteri and Kian Fox for their outstanding job leading our school in 2022.

I would also like to congratulate our new leadership team for 2023. Our students voted for those students they thought would do the best job in leading them through 2023.

They have big shoes to fill as our 2022 team was pretty special.

Our Captains for 2023 are:

Lachlan McGrath and Marley Lang

Vice Captains for 2023 are:

Jayden Randle and Isla-Rae Maumau

Zoo Snooze

Each year we give our Year 6 students a choice of the way they would like to celebrate their graduation and again this year they choose the Zoo Snooze at Taronga Zoo.

Last week the graduating students and four of our teachers participated in the overnight visit to the Zoo. They enjoyed the tour of the zoo after hours. They were serenaded by Jack Johnson who was performing on the steps of the Sydney Opera House and the raucous sounds of seals and birds throughout the late evening and early morning.

K-2 Excursion to Calmsley Hill Farm

On Tuesday of Week 8 Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 visited Calmsley Hill Farm. The students enjoyed their day of inquiry and adventure visiting different animal exhibits and shows. Some of the highlights of the day were the tractor ride through the farm, nursing the baby chicks and ducklings, and the working dog show.

It was lovely to see the pure joy on many of their faces as they were petting the goats and sheep and milking the cows.

3-6 Excursion - Field of Mars

Years 3- 6 had a wonderful time visiting the Field of Mars this term where they explored nature and got to see firsthand the effects of pollution. Through hands on activities, students learnt how we can do our part in sustaining landscapes and the beautiful creatures that live within them.

Staff Changes

I have sad news for us but exciting news for the individuals.

There are many teachers will be leaving us this year. We have been fortunate enough to have had the support of many temp teachers this year, however, they have managed to receive permanent placement at other schools or have secured teaching positions much closer to their homes. We thank Miss Mani, Ms Colbran, Ms Chan and Mr Ali for their care and dedication to our students and wish them luck as they continue their teaching careers.

We wish Mr Gawthorne success in his new role as Assistant Principal Curriculum and Instruction only 6 minutes from home. He is sure to enjoy many more hours with his family as he will no longer be travelling an hour and a half to school and back each day. We thank you Mr Gawthorne for the wonderful leadership and passion you have devoted to Widemere over the last 8 years.

We are so happy for Mrs Moopanar, who after 20 years of service with the Department of Education at Widemere and over 40 years of teaching has decided to put her whiteboard marker and musical baton away. Mrs Moopanar is retiring and she will be missed by students, teachers and our families as she has nurtured her students to be the best they can be both in the classroom and on the stage. We thank you for the music Mrs Moopanar and wish you well. We hope you enjoy your time away from us but please don't forget us.

Premiers Reading Gold Certificate Winners

Congratulations to our wonderful Premiers Reading Gold Certificate Winners - This certificate is given to the students who have completed 4 consecutive years of the Premiers Reading Challenge.

This year we also had some of our Year 6 students receive a Platinum Certificate - These certificates are given to the students who have completed 7 consecutive years of the Premiers Reading Challenge.

Congratulations to all our students who successfully completed the Premiers Reading Challenge this year.

Covid School Update

Widemere Public School strives to keep our school COVID free. As you know we follow directives from the Department of Education and NSW Health to enable our students and staff to remain safe and happy at school.

Students who show any signs of sickness are asked to stay at home. Once they are feeling better and are symptom free, they may return to school. We ask that you inform the school of students who are away because of COVID or any other illnesses.

We will continue to update you of changes as they affect our school.

Our school remains committed to physical distancing and good hygiene practices.

We would really like to thank our wonderful P&C Association who are always champions of our school. We have met via Zoom all year which has benefitted all and ensured steady members at each meeting.

Our school thanks the members of the P&C for their hard work and dedication to our school this year and particularly our P&C Executive Members,  Sean Marden, Veronica Fox, Joshua Bowles, Anthony Roseman and Lisa Johnston and her fundraising team.
