Principal's Message

Hello to Students, Parents, Staff and Friends of St Matthew’s,

NEW DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

After a long selection process and numerous interviews it gives me great pleasure to announce that we have appointed a new Deputy Principal, who will also be our Learning & Teaching Leader. The decision of the panel of Fr Boy, Mr Joe Scerri (MACS Regional consultant), Mrs Helen Howden (REL, Learning Diversity Leader & current Acting DP) and myself was unanimous. Mrs Rachael Spooner is our new Deputy Principal.

Rachael has a wealth of experience as a teacher and leader and is currently the Deputy Principal at St Luke’s in Lalor. She will be commencing at the start of Term two as staff in Catholic schools have to give 7 term weeks notice. I hope that Rachael can at least meet our staff and some of the grades sometime next week. We are certainly looking forward to Rachael starting with us and sharing her warmth, expertise and knowledge with our whole school community.

When she does commence in Term 2 please introduce yourself and make her feel very welcome. Rachael is very much a people person and will love getting to know all of our students, parents and staff.

RAPID ANTIGEN TESTS

As you are aware the third lot of Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) came home with each student again yesterday and today. If your child hasn’t been at school then please call in and pick up your pack, one per child.

This week all students should have been tested on Monday morning before coming to school. For the remainder of this week please test your child/children on Wednesday morning before coming to school and Monday and Wednesday of each week.  If your child tests NEGATIVE you DO NOT have to contact school. If your child tests POSITIVE then YOU DO CONTACT school.

My sincere thanks to those diligent parents who have been testing their children. We have had a low amount of positive cases so far (fingers Crossed) and hopefully it remains that way.

ENROLMENTS FOR 2023

Some families have been asking about when to enrol their children for 2023. We open enrolments in Catholic Education Week, which always has St Patrick’s Feast day in it. We also have tours during that week both during the day and evening as well.

They will be on Tuesday 15th March @ 9:30am & 7:00pm

                             Thursday 17th March @9:30am & 7:00pm

Advertising Notice Boards will be going up around the perimeter fence in the coming weeks advertising that enrolments are open for 2023.

If one of these times suits you then please ring the office on 9359 5423 to book yourself in.

Also if families are unable to attend tours at this time we can arrange other times which suit both prospective parents and the school.

Take care, stay safe and stay well everyone.

Yours Sincerely,

Bob Brown

GRADE 6 CAMP

Our Grade 6 campers took off early this morning. They all came packed and ready and raring to go. Some were a little nervous, other over excited but everyone was ready to help each other in whatever way they could.

This morning I witness, one child who was struggling to carry a bag and another grade 6 without worry or question or a teacher asking saw the struggle, quickly jumped up and helped. If this is how they behaved before they even left St Matthew’s this morning, I can only think that this camp is going to be exceptional.

With only 33 children (1 was unable due to an injury) I think this group of grade 6 will have the best time. They will be flying at speed on a flying fox, up in the air on the possum glide, learning to canoe across a lake, baking damper and even looking for the elusive “ Drop Bears” (not many people have ever seen them but we keep on looking!)

For those parents who are concerned for their children – don’t worry – we will do our very best to look after your children. We have lots of staff who are attending: The grade 6 teachers Mrs Pengelly, Mr Burrafato, Mr Donlon as well as our Student Wellbeing leader Mrs Fleischmann. Joining them are two Learning Support Officers, Miss Josie and Mr Andy.

We wish them luck and we will keep the families posted on their progress via Seesaw.

PRAYER FOR THE WEEK

BEGINNING OF LENT

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

LENT

Lent is a time of preparation for the Season of Easter, it lasts for 40 days.

It starts on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter Sunday.

However, if you look at a calendar and count the days, there are more than 40 days. Lent is actually 46 days, however the six Sundays are not included because there is no obligation to fast on Sundays in Lent.

We have to understand that Lent calls us to do three things:

°         Prayer

°         Fasting

°         Alms giving

For Prayer we can recite the prayers that the children already know every day, they can say the “Our Father”. “The Hail Mary” every day. This can be said in moments of quiet at the start of the day and last thing at night.

For Fasting, we encourage our children to give up something that they would love to have – like chocolate, a tv show, after dinner biscuits or sweets. Ask your child what they can give up!

For Alms giving, donating to the poor, every child was given Project Compassion boxes that can have some small change placed in it by family members. If your child didn’t bring the box home yet, don’t worry it could be in their school tub. These can be returned AT THE END OF THE TERM.

God Bless

Bloom where you are planted

A theme for this year.

Over the last two years we all know how difficult life has been. We have all been challenged in so many different ways.

Some have been challenged by understanding the complexity of a world-wide pandemic and what it really means for each of us.

Some have been challenged by distance learning.

Some have been challenged by being stuck at home, month after month. Some even challenged by those around us.

BUT St Francis de Sales – an unusual saint who had lots of clever sayings that he used in his writings - challenges us even more during these times – to BLOOM WHERE WE ARE PLANTED.

So, what does this actually mean?

I think it means to realize that though we may not be in the ideal place, time or job, we are challenged to still do our best. To show our talents and skills even if we are under pressure, or even disappointed with our lives.

By challenging ourselves, and blooming we can begin to see the good, the wonderful aspects around us that we may not have seen clearly, and in return others around us see the good in our “blooming”.

So this year at St Matthew’s let us all BLOOM, let us all take on the challenges of a post pandemic world, enjoy and take on the challenges in the classroom and in the school yard.

LEARNING AND TEACHING

High School Applications for Gifted and Highly Able Students

Often parents ask about opportunities for students who are excelling at school especially in

Mathematics, English and Science. The government provides a program called SEAL.

SEAL programs are offered to gifted and highly able students. If your child is performing well above

grade level consistently over a number of years and enjoys problem solving and extending him or

herself then this is something to think about.

What is SEAL?

SEAL stands for Select Entry Accelerated Learning.

“Victorian Government secondary schools have been operating specific programs at authorised

schools for gifted students since 1980. These have been known as Select Entry Accelerated Learning

(SEAL) schools. The Academy of Accredited SEAL Schools (TAASS) has been established to

maintain this tradition to enable groups of like minded students to develop academically, socially and

emotionally.”

https://www.sealacademy.org.au/index.php/about-the-seal-academy

Students in a SEAL program usually complete years 7, 8, 9 and 10 in three years and then have the

opportunity to do one or two VCE subjects in year 10. This is a process called telescoping - where

students move through at a faster pace and also have the opportunity for other enrichment

experiences.

Which Schools Offer a SEAL Program?

The full list of metropolitan SEAL schools can be found here.

In our local area both Gladstone Park Secondary College and Reservoir High School offer SEAL
