Summer break is well and truly over! Students have made a sensational start to the 2020 school year. All our parents are now warmly invited to meet our teachers, see your child's classroom and welcome our new families to the Sutton school community at a Welcome to School BBQ!
At our 2020 "Meet the Teacher" evening, to be held on Thursday 27th February from 5:30 - 7:00pm, teachers will be available to speak with you in person to answer general questions regarding programs, opportunities and classroom organisation. Parents will be able to make a future appointment to discuss specific needs of their child. Classrooms will be open from 5:30pm to 6:00pm to enable parents to visit with their child and see where all the great work will be taking place. A sausage sizzle will be served between 6pm and 7pm. We look forward to welcoming you to the 2020 school year.
School Assemblies, held each Wednesday afternoon, will now commence at 2:40pm. We warmly welcome all our family and community member to attend as we celebrate our school successes.
This change of starting time is necessary to acccommodate a new timetable for the new year. Mrs Frame will be teaching music in the hall until 2:30pm.
We look forward to seeing you next Wednesday and ask that parents and guests do not enter the hall before 2:30pm.
Our students and staff will be getting active each Monday, Tuesday and Friday morning taking part in fast and fun fitness activities for the first ten minutes of the day.
Our house captains will be developing their leadership skills leading their school mates in a range of activities supported by the staff.
The three house groups will rotate through three activities each week. The organisation will be written up and posted on the wall under the playground clock.
Students will look for their house captains as soon as the 'get ready' bell rings each Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Students will assemble with their leaders and wait for their teachers. We want everyone ready to get active by 9:20am! After activities our house groups will return to class lines on the basketball court to collect their bags and begin the days learning.
There is nothing extra required by students to take part - just their school uniform, positive attitude and a healthy breakfast to give them energy to burn.
As well as the obvious health benefits, we know that exercise is helping children perform better in class. They are more focused, their levels of concentration are so much better and they are more relaxed in behaviour too, in the classrooms and playground.
Let's get fit and active and ready to learn!
NB: Our fitness program will start on Monday 17th February for Years 1 to 6. Our Kindergarten students will be joining in soon.
Students are now able to choose the school hall as a lunchtime playtime area each day of the school week. They are able to choose from a range of passive play activities such as board games, lego, books, dress-ups, construction activities and more. Choosing to use our hall as a " passive playground" is a great way to support students with social skills and social engagement. It also gives an alternative space away from the harsh weather conditions we have been experiencing or a place to chill if that is how you feel.
The school library is another playtime option on Wednesday at 2nd half of lunch. The library offers a 'chilled' space and a great choice of books to read.
For active play, our Baylis oval, fixed equipment, basketball courts, sandpit and pirate ship all remain popular places to play. The sports shed is open each lunchtime for students to borrow equipment such as balls, ropes and sand play toys.
We believe we have a responsibility to ensure that everyone has sufficient time and space to explore and participate in a range of play activities as part of their education and in pursuit of developing the whole child.
We ask that students bring only small, inexpensive toys to school that are not a distraction and can safely be zipped into a pocket or school bag. Conflicts arise or friendships are damaged when toys are lost, or broken and while teachers take every precaution, they cannot take responsibility for any such personal items brought to school.
For this reason, we ask that students do not bring their beyblades and arena's to school on any day except Friday, where they may be played with in the school hall at lunchtime. We understand there are many keen enthusiasts within the student body, but ask that beyblades are kept for after school activities or play date fun. The school provides plenty of activities and games for students to enjoy.
Money for school purposes (lunches, banking, excursion costs etc) can be handed in at the school office from 9am or is collected during role call early each morning. Students should always be discouraged from bringing large amounts of money to school or from wearing jewelry that could cause injury or is of monetary or personal value.
The school asks each family for a voluntary financial contribution each year. Contributions are not compulsory but they do enhance the school’s educational, building and ground development.
In 2020 we have an ambitious program for improving student access to technology.
30 ipads - for use with our robotics programs and infants classroom activities
2 ipad charging docks - to manage the charging of ipads and downloading of apps and software
15 chromebooks - used by our senior classes who work independently and in small, collaborative project groups accessing google classroom.
1 chromebook charging hub - to manage the charging of ipads and downloading of software
The Voluntary Contribution is currently set at $100.00 for 1 child and $130.00 for 2 or more children at the school.
Thank you to those who have paid for their child's learning resource packs. As there is still a large number of packs to be paid for , we remind you that payment of $80 is required as soon as possible. Thank you.
Health Care Plans
If a student has a health condition that may require support at school you should notify the school when enrolling or as soon as the condition becomes known to you. You will be asked to complete an individual Health Care Plan which will provide staff with information to help them support the student at school.
Parents of students who have existing health plans are encourage to review their child's plan each year to ensure we are able to care for child's changing needs.
Medication
Where medication needs to be prescribed over the course of a week, parents are requested to ask their doctor to schedule dosages before and after school. This will avoid the necessity to administer medication at school.
If medication must be administered during school hours a written, staff can only administer medication if a Request for Administering Prescribed Medication to a Student Form (also available from the front office) has been completed. In addition, we ask that medication is provided is labelled with the following details:
◘ The student’s name
◘ Name of the medication to be administered
◘ Dosage to be administered
◘ Time to be administered
Stage 2 enjoyed their excursion to the Australian War Memorial.
At the Australian War Memorial students explored the reasons why we continue to remember the service and sacrifice of Australian servicemen and women, particularly on Anzac Day and Remembrance Day. Stage 2 investigated the symbolism of the Memorial's Commemorative Area, identify a name on the Roll of Honour, and explore the Hall of Memory. They also had the opportunity to participate in a short commemorative poppy laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Australian Soldier.
The excursion inspired Stage 2 inquiry into History: Community and Remembrance. Which includes days and weeks celebrated or commemorated in Australia (including Australia Day, ANZAC Day, Harmony Week, National Reconciliation Week, NAIDOC Week, National Sorry Day) and the importance of symbols and emblems.
