Principal's Message

Dear Parents/Carers,

Wow! Week 8 already! It's been a busy term already and our teachers are working hard. Our classes are really settled and I've had lots of students visiting my office to show me the great work that they are doing.

Mrs Chieffe & Mrs McLachlan relaunched our You Can Do It program this year. We have had a number of new teachers join our Warilla team and it has been exceptional professional learning. Teachers are learners too!

From the YCDI Website:

https://www.youcandoiteducation.com.au/

"The YCDI program is based on Michael Bernard’s work as a consultant school psychologist in primary and secondary schools with students and their families referred for a variety of emotional (anger, anxiety, depression), behavioural (non-compliance, bullying, aggression) and learning challenges (lack of motivation, under-achievement) the development of You Can Do It! Education in schools began in the 1990’s. Michael spent many years helping young people to cognitively restructure their negative, irrational ways of thinking about themselves, others and their schoolwork to more rational and positive approaches while helping young people acquire a range of rational beliefs (self-acceptance, high frustration tolerance, acceptance of others). The strengthening of a rational mindset led to reductions in these student’s emotional and behavioural problems and increases in their positivity, achievement and wellbeing.

Kidsmatter recognised YCDI! Education as a best-practice social and emotional learning program. YCDI! Education school curricula are aligned with the Australian national curriculum and teach the Personal and Social Capabilities outlined in the ACARA learning standards framework."

There are 5 Keys to success:

  • Confidence
  • Persistence
  • Organisation
  • Getting Along
  • Resilience

Our teachers explicitly teach these 5 keys to success.

We are in the process of revisiting our Warilla Wellbeing Policy and Procedures to align to the YCDI and the DET Wellbeing Framework and NEW Student Behaviour Strategy released last week by the Minister Sarah Mitchell.

Outdoor Learning Area/Picnic tables

Graham, our wonderful GA is working hard to build our new outdoor learning area for our students. It will also double as a picnic area for our students at play time. It will look fantastic when it's finished.

Welcome back parents!

What a year! We warmly welcome you back. It was a very strange situation, especially for our Year 1 students who have no real memory of parents being on our school site.

Please sign in using the QR codes at the top of our school ramp. It is encouraged that parents are only on site for 15 minutes. Maintain social sistancing of 1.5m. Our gates are open from 2:50pm. Please don't wait at the classroom windows as students get very distracted.

If you need to see your child's teacher, please contact the office to make an appointment as we have afternoon professional learning sessions which need to start by 3:10pm.

Year 7 High School Enrolment Forms

Our Year 6 students received their enrolment forms for Year 7. Mrs Bourne & Ms Fay have been working closely with Warilla High School transition team - there are some transition sessions booked in for our students. We will notify you closer to the dates.

A huge shout out to Warilla High School who performed above state average in 2020. 18% of all students achieved in the top two HSC bands. HSC Band 6 results grew by 300% in 2020. Large credit goes to the feeder primary schools which include Warilla PS, Shellharbour PS, Flinders PS, Barrack Heights PS & Shell Cove PS who provide quality education and work as a committed Community of Schools.

Follow the Warilla High School Facebook page.

Crazy Hair & Sock Day

The students had a great day showing off their amazing hairstyles and crazy socks. Thanks to all our families who sent in a gold coin donation. With 283 students at our school, we raised $293 which goes towards our raffle prizes at the Easter Hat Parade.

Canteen News

Our canteen will continue to operate from our service window. This saves time as parents don't need to do the QR code or wander through the school to the canteen. Kath finds it far more effective too! Thanks for your support.

Warilla Welcomes PEAK

We are excited to announce that PEAK Sports & Learning will be operating a before and after school care at Warilla Public School next term. This is a fantastic resource for parents who need before and after school care.

If you need care for your children in the holidays, contact PEAK.

To find out more or if you need any assistance, contact us on 1300 GO PEAK (1300 467 325) or email admin@peaksportslearning.com.au - We hope to see you at Peak these holidays!

Attendance

We want to improve our student attendance. We need your support

Regular attendance helps students to:

  • develop a sense of belonging
  • develop and maintain friendships
  • be more engaged at school
  • progress with their learning
  • be more aware of career and life options.

Every day counts. Missing just one day a fortnight can amount to four weeks of lost learning over a year. Over their school life, this can equal one year of missed learning.

Rainbow Reading

Rainbow Reading Challenge

All students at Warilla Public School are encouraged to participate in the ‘Rainbow Reading Challenge’, our school’s home reading initiative.

The Rainbow Reading Challenge’ is designed to be both achievable and engaging. It requires students to progress through seven coloured levels throughout the year, before receiving a beautiful Rainbow Reading Ribbon. Students who complete the Challenge for two consecutive years across a Stage, also receive a Rainbow Reading medal at the school’s special Presentation Day Assembly.

Your child’s efforts will also be acknowledged along the way with a certificate at the completion of each coloured level. Every student begins their challenge on level Red.

We encourage students to read on the weekends and during the holidays to help develop a love of reading.

Please note: Parents/carers are required to date and sign for each day their child has read (one signature regardless of the number of books or pages read).

Any concerns, contact Mrs Mitchell for further information.

General Permission 2021

Please update your child's general permission for 2021. Use our Skoolbag App to update the details using the eForm tab.

Unfortunately, we don't use this as an information/response platform. If you need an answer to a question, please contact our school office on 4295 1867.

Skoolbag App - Where you find our information!

Skoolbag App can be downloaded from the App store for free. We use the Skoolbag App to remind parents and inform parents of upcoming events etc.

Please download it, as most of our information is now sent electronically.

We understand that students get sick at times.

What we need you to do...

  • Parents are required to explain the absences of their children from school promptly and within seven days to the school. An explanation for absence must be provided to the school within 7 days of the first day of any period of absence.
  • Use the Skoolbag App to let us know the reason for your child's absence. Click on eForms and select Absentee Form.
