Term 1 - Week 4 (28 February, 2020)

Principal's Message

Dear St Mary's School Community

Matthew 4: 1-11

In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus is led by the Spirit into the wilderness.  He fasts for forty days and forty nights and is very hungry.  Then the devil tempts him, promising riches, power and glory if Jesus worships him.  But Jesus turns Satan away.  Then angels appear and look after him.  All of Sunday’s readings, including this Gospel, are all about temptation.  When Adam and Eve ate the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge, they were going against the desires of God.  Jesus is sometimes called ‘the new Adam’, because he lived in perfect obedience to his Father.

Faction Swimming Carnival

The Faction Swimming Carnival will be held next Thursday, 5th March at Merredin Pool.  This year, we are incorporating the K-2 Water Play day into the program allowing for a more whole-school event.  While the K-2 children will not be swimming, they will be participating in water games and relays before having morning tea and heading back to school with their teachers.  I look forward to seeing you all at the Carnival to cheer on and support your children – hopefully the weather gives us sunshine only!

Schools Classic

Congratulations to both St Mary’s teams who ended up equal second in their pools and third on percentage (despite the rain and electrical storms)!  I am told that the students gave their all and showed excellent sportsmanship.  Thanks again to Meg Gethin for coordinating this event for our students.

Public Holiday

Just a reminder that Monday, 2 March is a Public Holiday.  I hope that you all enjoy the mini mid-term break with your families.

God Bless and have a lovely weekend with your families,

Ms Adriana Coniglio

Principal

Religious News

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a season that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Lent lasts for forty days because that’s how long Jesus wandered in the desert, fasting, while he resisted Satan’s temptations. During the forty days of Lent, it is an opportunity to be like Jesus, to resist temptation and to be closer to God.

Class News

Year Four/Five RE Corner

This Term the Year 4/5 class has discussed Community in Religious Education. We created our first class display which explored communities we belong to, their leaders and how people become members. We have read Scripture on how Jesus chose his disciples and initiated a community of followers that would later become our Church.

Pre Primary Class News

In Pre-Primary we have now settled into full time schooling by focusing on our letter sounds and our numbers. On Fridays we have been using both the indoor environment during our literacy and numeracy sessions. Last week we wrote out first class book for the year called 'I went walking'.

Phys Ed

Welcome back to the new school year, we have plenty of fun Physical Education lessons planned for this term. Late in Term Three last year we were again successful in gaining a Sporting Schools Grant. With the money we have purchased a whole school Golf Program which we are going to run this term. Unfortunately the equipment has been on back order and is not due to arrive for another two weeks.

In the meantime we have been looking at Invasion Games and building teamwork with our friends and peers. Lots of fun has been had already learning some of these new games to play as a whole class.

The Golf program is due to begin in week six. Here is a picture showing some of the equipment we have purchased.
