Principals Report

Dear Parents

Welcome back to school! It is wonderful to see all of the students again. It feels like the beginning of the year, classrooms are full of learners, playgrounds are full of games and laughter, everyone is settled and excited. The students are really enjoying being back with their friends and classmates and staff are enjoying having the students back.  I know the majority of the time students say they don’t like school…. right now, I would beg to differ.

Thank you to parents, carers and families. I know this hasn’t been an easy time but you have survived. Congratulations to the students, their resilience has definitely been tested through changing times. Hopefully we are through the worst of it.

We continue with our heightened hygiene processes and social distancing when practical. Our Drop-offs and Pick-up procedures will continue for the time being.

Even with the interruptions to our learning and teaching programs, teachers are busy gathering assessment data and information for Semester 1 Reports. These will be sent home on Thursday 25th June.  Reports will grade the subjects of Religion, English and Mathematics on 5-point scale and teachers will provide a general comment.  All Specialist subjects will have a semester overview.

Opportunity will be provided to discuss progress with your child’s classroom teachers at parent/teacher interviews next term. Booking information will be provided next term.  We are grateful to all our families for their amazing support and interaction through the Remote Learning time.

Now that we are back to school, it is important that students maintain their high standard of appearance. There are many students not in the correct uniform, do not have their hair tied back, or have incorrect footwear. We can appreciate that children may have grown and uniforms no longer fit, however we still require a note from parents explaining that it is only a short term issue.

Last Day of Term 2: Pyjama Day: Thursday 25th June - To finish off Term 2 with a little fun, the last day of term will be a Pyjama Day. Children can come to school in PJs, and dressing gown if needed. The canteen will still be open for lunch orders. Mid-year Student Reports will go on this day and school will finish at the usual time (3:10pm)

Closure Day: 26th June - Friday 26th June will be a student free, teacher planning day. This day will be used to evaluate student learning during Term 2 and to plan accordingly for Term 3.

Congratulations to Peta Barnett and her husband Callum who are expecting their first child in September.

Regards

Chris Dortmans, Principal

News from the Classrooms

Junior News - Welcome back Foundation, One and Two students!

It was so lovely to see all of your bright happy faces as you entered the classroom each day. Although we have been apart for what feels like a very long time, it has been amazing how the students have slipped right back into the classroom as if they had never left.

School is still a little different at the moment, we say goodbye to family at the gate, wash our hands multiple times a day and social distance to keep each other safe and healthy. We are spending some time getting to know each other again and how to WALK with St john.

Over the next few weeks the junior students will be revising and consolidating the skills they have been learning from home.

On behalf of the Junior team we would like to thank every parent, guardian, brother, sister, aunty or uncle that supported the students during remote learning. We are a team at St John’s and we wouldn’t have been able to do it without you.

Middle/Senior News - We would like to welcome back our Middle and Senior students, yesterday was their first day back after Remote Learning. We were so proud of their ability to return to school settled and ready to learn. They have all done an amazing job! Keep it up superstars, you are setting a brilliant example for the Junior students!

Over the next three weeks, we will continue to get back into the school routine. In Mathematics, we will be finishing our unit on length, perimeter and area. We started this during Remote Learning but did not finish the unit. We will then be doing a week on Multiplication and a week on Division. We covered these 2 concepts during Remote Learning, however, we will be revising them. In Writing, we will be continuing our weekly spelling words as well as learning how to write an information report.

The Victorian State Government has announced a community consultation opportunity regarding Remote Schooling through an online survey.

The Survey is available for completion until 3 July 2020, please follow the link above to complete.

Your feedback is sought to understand what lessons were learned during Remote Schooling and the challenges or opportunities to consider for strengthening the future of school education in Victoria.

School Fee Payments

All families who are experiencing financial pressures as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic have the opportunity to apply for a concession relating to their Term 2 2020 school fees.

Fee payers requesting consideration for fee relief should contact either Chris Dortmans or Nancy Rintoule to discuss their school fee obligations.

School fees are an essential portion of resources for the operation of our school and assist our leaders and staff to enhance curriculum and teaching programs.  We therefore ask that those able to support the school financially continue to do so.
