Dudley Public School Newsletter

Term 3 Week 5 2022

Principal’s Message

School Pride

At last week’s assembly I talked about school pride and how the many opportunities provided by our amazing staff for our students contribute to a shared pride in our school and student success. Our students are lucky to be presented with opportunities to participate and represent the school in so many extra-curricular areas including team sports, debating, sport carnivals and gala days, public speaking, game changers and general class excursions and camps.

I am very proud of the behaviour and conduct of our students on their representation of Dudley PS at these events and their efforts to maintain the high standards and expectations that Dudley Public School’s reputation holds within the community.

A fine effort from our students and a big thanks to the staff and parents/carers who assist to make these opportunities possible for our students.

Road Works Update

The road works on Ocean St have seen a great improvement to ensuring the safety of our students and the community when crossing such a busy road. Just a reminder for parents to please use the crossing and not take the shortcut to the corner, as we need to be good role models for our students. Our crossing supervisors do such a wonderful job for the safety of our students, so please remind your child to wait at the side of the road for their signal to cross safely once the traffic has been stopped.

Have a wonderful week,

Chad Tsakissiris

Ethics: Dudley Public School

Ethics continues to be offered in term 3. The program is available to the students in Year 6. We have one volunteering teacher facilitating the program this term – Jonathan Mantel.

So far this year, we have not been able to offer the program to all the students in years K-5 who opted in to participate. Unfortunately, there are not enough teachers to form the requisite number of classes. To comfortably accommodate everyone, we are looking for four additional volunteering teachers.

Earlier this year, Jonathan’s class discussed fairness, equality of opportunity, human and animal rights, differences between beliefs and opinions and types of arguments.

Coming up later this term is the discussion about performance enhancement in sports. The topic is a perennial favourite for the students and teachers alike; you might hear Year 6 students continuing to puzzle over it after class. Students will discuss the concept of unfair advantage and whether the taking of performance-enhancing drugs is morally wrong.

Can you help facilitate ethics classes at your school?

We are looking for volunteers. We would love to be able to offer classes to all students enrolled in ethics and keep the classes comfortably small to allow everyone to participate.

Ethics classes run for 30 minutes on Tuesday afternoons. Please consider whether you are available to help. Grandparents and the wider community are welcome to apply.

Detailed lesson plans are provided by Primary Ethics and have been approved by the Department of Education. Primary Ethics provides teacher training. The training consists of online self-study modules and a comprehensive 2-day workshop (in-person or via Zoom).

For more information about the program and to apply, please visit https://primaryethics.com.au/volunteer/ethics-teacher/

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Julia on 0402 414 041 or Julia.kosheleva@primaryethics.com.au or use the contacts provided on the website.

School Fish Tank Update

We are so happy to announce that the school fish tank was kindly donated to the Marine Biology department at Kotara High School.

The students at Kotara will use it to support their studies and are extremely grateful to receive such a worthwhile donation.

A big thank you must go to MR DAVID COOPER for looking after our fish while they were in our school office. They were very happy fish!

We are eagerly counting down the weeks until our Book Week celebrations - Wednesday Week 9, here at Dudley! National Rugby League

Dudley PS has their very own Australian champion! Sam Nugus represented NSW  in the Under 12s National Rugby League Championships. Sam began his journey way back in Term 1 trying out for the Eastlakes Zone squad. From there he trialled and made the Hunter Opens team that eventually went on to win the State Championships against 12 other regions. If this wasnt enough, he was then selected with 33 other players to attend a training camp at the Academy of Sport in Narrabeen to make the NSW team. Sam was selected in this team to compete at the Australian Championships in Wollongong.  After being beaten by QLD in the preliminary rounds, his team gained revenge in the final, beating QLD 10-6. Congratulations Sam! You have made your school and club so proud! If you would like to see a replay of the match follow the link and fast forward to 1 hour and 10 minutes. https://youtu.be/rflJBuhZuw8

Sustainability

Waste Education

We continue to focus on each of our five coloured bins to educate our school community about what can and cannot be recycled. This fortnight, we are shining a light on our final bin – the red bin. This is also known as our landfill, general waste or real rubbish bin. This includes things such as dirty plastics, dirty paper, dirty cardboard, cling wrap, Zooper Doopers and single use coffee cups.

Lala the Landfill Koala says:

If in doubt, chuck it out! Put it in the red bin and don’t contaminate our school recycling bins!

Garbage Guardians

Our Garbage Guardians are always on the lookout for students doing the right thing. Last week, our Garbage Guardians awarded another prize winner. Congratulations to William in 3/4W, who won a reusable food thermos for picking up rubbish, sorting it into the correct bins and keeping our playground beautiful. Thank you, William!

Garden Club

A huge thank you to all our wonderful families who volunteered their time at our recent school working bee. As a result of your fabulous efforts, our school grounds are looking beautiful – gardens have been mulched, our wicking garden bed has been added and some of our existing beds have been moved. Our new garden shed (kindly donated by Bunnings Bennetts Green) has been put together and is now ready for use. Our school looks and feels so welcoming!

The Garden Club cannot wait to begin planting our sensory beds. Keep an eye out for our three beds: one focused on taste with a variety of edible plants; one filled with spikey and soft textures for touch and the last filled with wonderful aromatic herbs and plants to explore our sense of smell.

Enjoy the sunshine and have a wonderful week!
