Crafers Primary School

Newsletter 17 March 2023

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers

It is with a happy heart I am sharing good news from all fronts!

At the beginning of each year, we have the pleasure of electing House Captains. This year, we expanded the scope of these roles to School Leaders which includes not only the House Captain role but other leadership responsibilities and opportunities within the school. The search was on for 2 students from each House who have demonstrated leadership capabilities, made a contribution to the school and who value themselves and their learning. I am pleased to say there were a number of courageous students who submitted an application and presented a speech to their peers. The speeches were of high quality and were individualised. In Decimus, the students were asked to finish with one word they thought was vital in the role of School Leader. This, they were able to do without hesitation which is a good sign of a thought application!

This year's School Leaders are:

Decimus - Oliver Young & Gabrielle Oosterbaan

Paxlease - Ella Barton & Ascha Cochrane

Hardy - Bobby Duong & Amelie Dewar

Wyatt - Roos Verjans & Ava Kahsay

I would like to congratulate these students and our other students who nominated. It's not easy to present in front of peers and compete with friends as well. All of the students have done this positively, with warmth and encouragement. They should be very proud.

On Tuesday, I received a phone call from the Department's media department; this is highly unusual! During the call, I learned that Matthew Summerton has been nominated as one of Australia's Best Teachers' - in a campaign being run by NewsCorp/The Advertiser. The nomination was made by one of our families and is certainly well-deserved recognition. The nomination contained the following description:

Matthew Summerton, Crafers Primary School, SA

Matthew’s approach to teaching, especially STEM, provides students with real world applications of the subject information. His enthusiasm for teaching and learning is embraced by the students. Our school is lucky to have such an amazing teacher. My eldest daughter struggled with maths and science but a year with Matthew has led to her going on to year 12 Maths and physics and eyeing an engineering degree. My youngest daughter is with Matthew this year.

In writing a description of Matthew, I couldn't have said it better myself; his ability to connect learning with the real-world is second to none. Congratulations Matthew!

Finally, I have some staffing news to share with you. Mr Nick Kerley has taken 12 months of leave. Nick is part way through his studies to be a Chiropractor and is taking this year to complete further study. Nick is a valuable member of our staff who has looked after needs too numerous to mention as well as worked with groups of children to care for our school. We wish Nick all the very best, we hope he studies conscientiously and returns to us if his commitments permit it. We have a very suitable person in process for this role and will make an announcement once this has been confirmed through the Department's Human Resources.

Kind regards

Chan

Governing Council 2023

During Week 4, we held our Crafers Primary School Annual General Meeting. At this time, we elected new members to our Governing Council and its Office Bearing positions. This year, we thanked and farewelled Amelia Hurren as Chairperson and Christian Freriks as Treasurer (although they are both continuing on the Council). Both had held these positions for a number of years; they have been an ongoing source of support and wisdom since I started at Crafers, and I would like to sincerely thank them both for their commitment to the school and the help and assistance they have offered me. I would also like to thank Cara Oosterbaan for her work on Governing Council, particularly Parents and Friend. Cara will be pivoting to the Spring Fair Committee.

I am happy to welcome new members to our Governing Council for 2023 and its positions. This year, we had a number of new nominations with the Council now consisting of the following:

Dean Topham - newly appointed Chairperson
Casey Hayes - newly appointed Deputy Chair
Jamie Fry - Treasurer - Jamie has been working alongside Christian for the best part of 2022
Penny Conor - newly appointed Secretary
Amelia Hurren
Christian Freriks
Tara Graham-Cochrane
Sally Barton
Caitlin Bate
Asha Walsh
Laura Morgan
Chan Welfare and Kathy Smith (Staff Representatives)

Introduction to our Governing Council Members

Name: Dean Topham
GC Position: Chair
Children: Lachlan (Year 4), Madeleine (Year 2), Harrison (Kindy soon!)
Pets: Ted (1 yo Border Collie), Ruby (11 yo cat)
Favourite thing about CPS: The strong sense of community within the school.

I'm originally from Coffs Harbour in NSW and consider myself lucky to have lived in several areas of Australia with time spent in Sydney, Perth, Alice Springs, Adelaide, Darwin and Hobart. As the kids got older, the time eventually came to plant more permanent roots and what better place than in the Adelaide Hills, with it's spacious blocks, easy access to the city and cooler climate in Summer. We found our home in Crafers West in 2019 and have enjoyed bringing the kids up on our hobby farm, consisting of several Black Suffolk sheep, a goat, a pony and chickens in addition to the dog and cat. Our family has been part of the CPS community since then. When I'm not at work I enjoy fishing and exploring SA in our caravan.

Attendance Snapshot

17th March - 94.5%
16th March - 95.4%
15th March - 93%
14th March - 93.5%

Many thanks to families who have hopped on board and helped us to get closer to our Attendance Target of 95%. We're nearly there and I am sure we can then maintain throughout the year. We have some incentives running across the school and hope the next snapshot will see us over the line!

An update from Ebony

Just last week I was helping a junior primary student find something they had lost in the yard during lunch time. After looking for just a few minutes, they turned to me and despondently said ‘Ebony, I don’t think we’ll ever find it’ and sat down. I turned to them and told them that we needed to change our thinking from ‘I can’t’ to ‘I can’.

With bright eyes, the student turned to me and said ‘I heard a story about that once. It was about a train who had to do something hard’.

In this moment, we discussed ‘The Little Engine That Could’ and how changing our mindset can change the way we approach something tricky. Believing we can do something that we perceive as difficult is the difference between giving up and giving it a go.

After we chatted about the story and trying things that seem difficult, we got back up and continued our search. You’ll be pleased to know that we found it in the end!

It was such a simple conversation, but one that I embraced and as a result, saw cogs turning in this student’s head about how they think about difficult tasks. Embrace those passing moments to help your children understand the importance of positive mindset and self-talk in tackling difficult tasks.

Courier Cup

On Thursday 2 March 2023, fifteen students represented Crafers Primary School in the Courier Cup Swimming Carnival, held at the Mountain Pool, Mount Barker.

A huge congratulations to all those students who competed for Crafers Primary School, your sportsmanship, effort and courage was amazing. After a slight hiccup with the results not being available at the end of the day due to technical issues I can say with great pride overall Crafers PS finished in 3rd position within the Hills District and 6th position combined with the Hills and Mt Barker District. Individual swimmer results can now be viewed by following this link: Courier Cup Results

A very special mention to William Tibbott who won the big event of the day being the Courier Cup Trophy. He swam 100m Freestyle in 1min and 10secs, a fabulous PB to win the day. Congratulations Will.

Well done to all the Courier Cup Swimmers for 2023!

Pedal Prix

Reminder: Pedal Prix Training sessions commence next week Tuesday 21st March 8.00 - 8:30am. Sessions are held every Tuesday and Thursday. Students can wear Pedal Prix tops or a sport top to training and change into school uniform afterwards.

Room 13 Learning

In Room 13, students have been busy learning about the exploration of European countries and the positive and negative impacts of colonisation. They have also been exploring fractions by identifying proper, mixed, and improper fractions. They have built their own fraction walls to compare different fractions by size and have been learning to convert them. Additionally, we have started our author study focusing on Graeme Base. We have been exploring his expressive and descriptive language and illustrations, and we have been trying to use these concepts in our own writing.
