FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK

I have had the pleasure of speaking with so many parents in the past few weeks as we undertake our phone-athon… in connecting with every School family.  These calls are so vital. This unique and highly personal approach mirrors the essence of our School. And after the initial reaction of surprise or concern in having the Principal on the line, there is a real sense of appreciation for us reaching out to you; yes, we are really concerned for each and every one of you. Listening to the stories from families demonstrates the variety of experience you have had, yet in almost all instances, the time spent as a family through the Remote Learning period has been a real gift. A gift of time, simplicity and of slowing down from the frenetic pace we all live; release from the challenge created by the spreadsheets of after school activities and the complexity of daily professional and personal expectations. You have told me of some of the concerns at the beginning, in finding the rhythm of Remote Learning, whilst your children have basked in the longer sleep-ins, and putting formal school uniforms aside, yet in every case, missing friends and the familiarity of the school routine and support of their teachers as a constant presence in the classroom, was noted.

I have been greatly encouraged by the extent of gratitude shown for the Staff. Your appreciation of the extent to which they have gone, in support of your children, has been acknowledged, and I have taken great pride in sharing this with the Staff. Throughout this period, the Staff were required to think about and design numerous pathways to the outcome they desired for their students and in so doing were often seeing opportunities for alternate outcomes which in turn became important to the learning experience. But what was so challenging was the rapid shift in conditions they were accommodating as we responded to the expectations of Prime Minister, Premier and Chief Health Officer! It is no wonder that many of you have noted the level of fatigue in your children and thus these holidays that are now upon us, are most timely. It may have been a short term, but we cannot underestimate the impact such change has wrought.

It was wonderful to visit the Year 11 Physics class and hear superb renditions of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star from our physicists who made their instruments during the Remote Learning period. And of course, Ms McInerney our Co-ordinator of Music was there to judge their performance.

Meanwhile, our Junior School students have been undertaking a range of field events on the oval in lieu of our cancelled Athletics Carnival which would normally have taken place this term; a victim of COVID-19!

At Term’s end, I would normally review the range of activities beyond the classroom. It is odd that I cannot do so! Yet, I can acknowledge once more, the live streaming of the Junior School cross country and the HSC Music students’ performances, brought to you through YouTube last week. And in what is now becoming the new normal, we are having our Weekly Assemblies via Zoom brought into every classroom, and providing a structure to our Fridays, just as would occur in the Hall. Mr Heath and Ms Probst arranged a new initiative on Tuesday evening for Mothers or Mentors with their sons and daughters; and this too was held via Zoom. Within this too, we have a number of C11 students supporting the event as group facilitators; my thanks to these girls. We had a wonderful Mufti Day in the Secondary School last week in support of World Refugee Day and I am so pleased for the Prefects in creating a clear mark to the term.

Thus in reflecting on these past nine weeks, we have observed wonderful elements of humanity in people responding to the challenges of isolation; there were the marvellous interactions observed when our students returned to their School; and tragically, trying now to make meaning from the despair and violence that continues to grip our world. Each of these elements must be absorbed and translated in an age and stage appropriate way as cultural education continues to sit alongside our formal curriculum.

My request for all members of our community in deliberating the biggest take away from this term like no other, is a plea, to not flick the switch back to pre COVID ways of doing in our personal and family time. Please try to incorporate some of the special family time you enjoyed and ensure these moments become a part of your precious times together in the weeks and months ahead.

We have learned to adapt; we have taken to our kitchens and homes in new ways and have appreciated more than ever the beauty of our local environment. In the holiday recess, may you continue to enjoy our country and enjoy these weeks ready for the new Term ahead.

My best wishes to you all.

The Skoolbag app is the main point of communication between the School and parents. It is used for School Communications, Permission Forms, HouseNews and Bus Bookings. You can also access Major Event Dates and our detailed School Google Calendars through the app. Parents can also use Skoolbag to inform the School of any upcoming absences.

Using the app allows the School to push important school communications directly to phones to keep parents regularly informed of activities and pertinent information relevant to you child.  We would encourage parents to subscribe to the Year group of their child to receive specific information for that year group.

If you need any assistance with Skoolbag please call or email the school on 9981 4400 or at: school.admin@tphs.nsw.edu.au.

Student Drop Off by Car – Important Reminder

Do not enter the Westmoreland Avenue carpark to drop off students, the kiss and drop facility is the South Creek Road carpark only.  Do not use any school driveway to pull in to drop off students, not only does this block entry or egress for all other traffic but backing out of these driveways is dangerous and does result in accidents.

SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS

United Nations World Refugee Day

In support of United Nations (UN) ‘World Refugee day’ on the 20th of June, members of the Pittwater House community dressed in the UN’s universal colour of blue and generously brought in a gold coin donation.  These funds will be donated to The United Nations Refugee Agency of Australia, where our the proceeds will go towards providing refugees with adequate hygiene equipment, healthcare, information about how to prevent the spread of Corona virus, and cash assistance to help these people to make ends meet. For those most vulnerable, forced to flee their homes due to conflict and disaster, we support you, and you have not been forgotten.

JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS

Kindergarten Bee Incursion

Last week, Kindergarten had the pleasure of attending an incursion held by Mrs McIntosh in the library who shared her passion of bees. In Science, Kindergarten are learning about the importance of bees in our world and how essential it is to maintain their numbers. Their goal in the following week, will be to design a bee hotel for a garden, to improve numbers. Mrs McIntosh demonstrated how to care for the bees as well as how to protect ourselves in the process. The students learned about the process of how honey arrives on our table and what is involved in producing honey. We thank her for her enthusiasm and will certainly use the knowledge that she presented in being able to design the best bee hotels on the Northern Beaches!

Year 6 Performing Arts Studies

Year 6, as part of their Performing Art studies, have been exploring the world of Stop Motion Animation through inquisitive and creative learning experiences. We were absolutely thrilled and delighted with the calibre of many of the films. Last Wednesday, Year 6 had a viewing of the completed works and 15 awards were given to acknowledge outstanding achievements in editing, screenplay narratives and stop motion techniques. Congratulations to Hugo and Ava for taking out Best Films overall.

PHPA (Pittwater House Parents Association)

From the President of the PHPA

Dear Parent Community,

A big thank you to all of you who joined our Term 2 Zoom Meeting.  This new format enabled Parents and Guardians to attend from wherever they were on the day and with the overwhelming positive feedback received, this could be a permanent fixture in our calendar, making community engagement more accessible.  The Term 3 meeting is scheduled for Friday 21st August (Week 5), we hope to see you there.

We received lots of suggestions regarding how we can bring everyone together virtually and in person (safely), please find a list of proposed events below.

These events and anything else organised by the PHPA for the remainder of this year will focus on bringing our Community together and providing a forum for all Parents and Guardians to connect with each other.  We really hope that there will be something that caters for everyone.

If you would like to be involved in the organisation of any of these events, have an idea for something new or would like to help in any way, please get in touch with us at: PHPA@tphs.nsw.edu.au.

GENERAL INFORMATION

From the Co-ordinator of Performing Arts

As Term 2 ends, we are getting ready for the “New Normal” for Term 3. All our ensembles are back onsite and running. The Private Music Tutors will be returning and our Years 3-4 Band Programs will return to having group tuition.

Major Production is moving along very well. Auditions were held last week and we will be doing Call Backs this week.

Major Production – High School Musical On Stage! (Years 7-11 2021)
Last week we held auditions for Lead, Supporting and Featured roles. We have been overwhelmed by the talent and skill we have seen from the students.

Due to this breadth of talent we would like to call a few students back for another round of auditions so we can determine who is best suited for the lead and supporting roles.

This call back doesn’t guarantee these students a Lead, Supporting or Featured role, this is for the Major Production Team to finalise their thoughts on what roles students will be best suited for.

Call Backs will be Friday 26 June during lunch. The list of Call Backs has been posted on Canvas and emailed to the students that are required.

It is still not too late to get involved with the show. Please come and see Mr Cosentino in the Performing Arts Centre.

These auditions are for Lead and Supporting roles.

If you do not have access to the Performing Arts Ensembles Canvas Page or have questions, please contact: performingarts@tphs.nsw.edu.au.

To ensure that our students have an opportunity to perform and our school community the chance to experience their hard work, we have put together a Video of the LIVE stream for our school community to enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dxz7QH7XWCw&feature=youtu.be
