Term 3 - Week 8 (9 September 2022)

Dear St Mary's School Community

Values in Focus: Sportsmanship

We play fairly for the enjoyment of all and encourage each other to do our best.

Gospel: Luke: 17: 11-19

In Sunday’s Gospel, we will hear the story of the ten lepers.  Jesus tells the cured man that his faith saved him.  People of deep faith actively seek to increase it.  They don’t wait for God to give it to them, they pursue God and ask for it.  We too can ask God to increase our faith.

Holy Communion

Our Year Four students had their Holy Communion retreat today which was facilitated by Miss Lynch.  At the 10.30am Mass on Sunday, we will have five students receiving the Sacrament of Eucharist for the first time.  Please keep Patrick O’Neill, Wilson Mason, Greta Gethin, Zac Crees and Hamish Carr, their families, their teachers and Fr Andrew in your prayers.

Learning Journeys

I look forward to seeing all St Mary’s families at the Learning Journey on Tuesday afternoon/evening.  Classrooms will be open at 3.20pm and remain open until 6.00pm and families can move through at their leisure as their children take them through their Learning Journey for Term Three.

St Mary’s Day

On Friday, 16 September we will be celebrating St Mary’s Day with a whole school Mass in the Hall beginning at 8.45am.  As part of these celebrations, we will be naming the School Hall as St Joseph's Hall. The students will then move off into their factions for some rotational activities.  All families are welcome to join us for the Mass.

It was very sad to wake up to the news this morning that Queen Elizabeth II had passed away. Regardless of our personal thoughts on the monarchy, Queen Elizabeth epitomised what it means to serve, something she did for her entire life.  Despite her very public life, the Queen was also a mother, grandmother and great grandmother.  We pray not only that the Queen may Rest In Peace but for her family as they come to comprehend the loss of their family matriarch.

Go the Dockers!

God Bless and have a lovely weekend with your families,

Ms Adriana Coniglio

Music

We have welcomed Term Three with a change from Music to Drama!

Pre-primary - This is the P/P’s first term at Drama and I have been so pleased at how much confidence they have brought from their two terms of Music. They have participated in lots of role play activities and are starting to have a go at improvising.

We read the book ‘Where the Wild things are” and have been using the story as a base for learning about characters and mime.

Year One , Two and Three - To re-introduce ourselves to Drama the children have been playing lots of drama games to build up confidence, improvisation skills and to have fun!

We have focused on the fairy-tale Jack and the Beanstalk and used the story line to create scenes and practice our characterisation.

Year Four, Five and Six -  This term the children have been playing lots of team building and improvisation games. As the children are getting older, I set them improvisation/situation tasks to perform in a group. These make for some hilarious scenes and they are growing their confidence and quick-thinking skills.

They have also started practising a script to perform in Week Ten. This is a great way for the students to perform in front of one another, receive feedback and practice all the skills they learn in the drama games.

Musica Viva came for a visit, this year we had Two Wheel Time Machine.

They were a trio who sang, played electric guitars and drums. Their performance was themed on the importance of learning new skills and how making mistakes is important and very normal. Making mistakes quite often leads to wonderful things!

From the conversations I had with the students, they thoroughly enjoyed the one hour performance. We are so lucky to have live music come and play at our school.

Faction Athletics Carnival

Last Thursday we held our Faction Athletics Carnival.  It was a fantastic display of our schools sporting talent. All students competed to the very best of their ability, showing great sportsmanship, comradeship and enthusiasm.

A big thankyou to all those who made the day possible, in particular parents who offered to help out on the day, the P & F for catering and Merredin Little Athletics for the use of their shade shelters and starting gun. Particular mention to Mr Crees and Mr Sharp who marked the oval for us at late notice, without their help our carnival would not have been able to go ahead.

We wish all of our students competing at the Interschool Carnival at Merredin College on the 15th September all the best.
