A FEW WORDS FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear families

As you know, the Department for Education has released a new strategy for public education which we are busy working through at our school. We have chosen to focus on Effective Learners as an area of impact for Hallett Cove East.  Effective Learners has 5 domains which are defined as:

1. Curiosity: Learners ask questions 'to get to the bottom of it' and are less accepting of received information

2. Creativity: Learners 'think outside the box', take chances, use imagination and intuition and are receptive to different ways of thinking and learning.

3. Meaning Making: Learners make connections between past information/experiences and new knowledge.

4. Strategic Awareness: Learners know what to do when they don't know what to do.

5. Metacognition and self-regulation: Learners can stop and think about what's needed to best achieve the task. Learners are able to manage their behaviours and reactions to their environment.

We are working on classroom approaches and learning opportunities that promote some or all of the domains to further develop our Effective Learners focus at Hallett Cove East PS. As we do our walkthroughs and classroom observations, both Robyn and I enjoy identifying and promoting classroom practice with teachers and students that links closely with our Effective Learners focus.

Celebrating our Volunteers

This week is National Volunteers Week. It is a chance for us to celebrate and recognise the volunteers who contribute so much to our school community. This week we are recognising our Governing Council and classroom volunteers who make such a wonderful contribution to our classrooms and our school community. Thank you from all of us for the difference you make in our classrooms and whole school, each and every day. You help our community thrive! We will recognise all of our school volunteers, later in the year at an end of year event.

Mid-Year Reception Class

We are very pleased that a new class will be established to welcome our new reception children and families to Hallett Cove East at the start of term 3. The class will be located in 7 West and at this stage will be home to 11 new students which will give the students a fantastic start to their school journey. We will commence transition visits on Wednesday mornings from weeks 7-9 of this term.

Starting Secondary School - 2025

For families of year 6 children, we hope you have registered your child for secondary school. Registrations of interest for 2025 enrolment close this year on Friday 24 May. You should’ve received a link to register online.

Student Achievements

Do you have a child who is achieving great things outside of school? We would love to hear about them. We really like to celebrate the achievements of our students in their wider community so if you have done something that little extra special, we would love to hear about it! Please let the school know and we will give it a shout out.

With regards

Matthew Chapman

Principal

A FEW WORDS FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

As we approach the end of Week 4, it's a perfect time to reflect on the rich experiences during the last two weeks at Hallett Cove East Primary School. It's been a wonderful celebration of learning, growth, and community engagement, spanning from Reception through to Year 6.

One of the highlights was undoubtedly the Hahndorf Farm Barn incursion, where I had the pleasure of joining our younger students in meeting Dallas the calf and many other furry friends. It was heartwarming to see the joy and wonder on the faces of our students as they interacted with these animals, connecting with nature in a meaningful way.

Another memorable moment was our participation in National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS), where our students, along with over 2 million children across the nation, engaged in a special reading of "Bowerbird Blues" at 11 am. NSS is where students, teachers, and staff come together to share in the joy of storytelling simultaneously with schools all over Australia. The beautiful artwork and displays created by students across the school, as well as the library's blue-themed celebration, added to the celebration of this annual event.

But the excitement didn't stop there. Our Year 1 to 3 students embarked on an excursion to Glenthorne National Park where they had the opportunity to develop teamwork skills through building construction of tents, bush walks with Uncle Tamaru, painting and various other activities.

As we look back on these past weeks, it's evident that every experience, whether big or small, has contributed to the rich learning experiences of our school community. Through hands-on activities, shared stories, and meaningful connections, we continue to foster a love for learning and a sense of belonging among our students.

Kind regards,

Robyn Physick

Deputy Principal
