Kambalda West District High School

2019 Term 4 - Issue 11

School Uniform

A reminder that wearing school uniform is an important part of being a student at KWDHS.   Correct uniform tells us that we have pride in our school.   It also helps keep our children safe as the uniform makes them easily identifiable in the playground.

Admin staff will be contacting home should your child not be in uniform.  If you need assistance with purchasing new uniforms please contact the office. We do have a lot of items in the lost property basket that can be re-gifted to families in need.

From the Principal : Mrs Candice Brown

Bush Fire Season

Thank you for your patience when we closed last week due to a catastrophic fire warning. These warnings are given in consultation with the Bureau of Meteorology and the Department of Education. A specific combination of wind conditions, temperature and ground conditions will result in a warning being issued. Kambalda is in an area classified at extreme risk when conditions reach catastrophic level.

This means that the school will be closed each time a catastrophic warning is issued.  Only the Department of Education Director General can close a school. Parents will be notified by Facebook, email and Skoolbag as soon as the warning is issued - usually the night before. Parents will then be notified when the warning is lifted. Safety of students and staff is our most important factor in closing the school. Please ensure your contact details are kept up to date.

Mobile Device Policy

Recently the Department of Education released a statement about the banning of mobile devices at schools in 2020. Luckily we already have this in place since mid Term 3 and this is a timely reminder to leave these devices at home or sign them into the office. These devices include mobile phones, personal iPods and iPads, laptops and any other electronic device. Personal ear phones may be used on school devices with the permission of the teacher. The Good Standing Policy and parent communication are attached below for your reference.

Are you Leaving or starting school next year

Parents are requested to let the school know if you think you are, or know you are, leaving town to ensure the school is adequately staffed next year.  Likewise, if you have family or friends moving to town, or starting Kindy for the first time we encourage you to have them contact the school.

Jump Jam

Congratulations to Miss Tisdell and the Jump Jam team who participated in the Kalgoorlie competition of Jump Jam. At the beginning of Term Four our Year 5/6 Jump Jam team headed into Kalgoorlie to compete against other Goldfield’s schools in the Year 4-7 Challenge category. They received an excellence in sportsmanship, merit presentation award, merit technical execution award and a merit in costumes!

School Planning for 2020

2020 enrolments - we are currently organising our staffing and classes for next year. If you know you are not returning next year, please contact the office. We understand that things change so we ask that you keep us up to date with your intentions to ensure that we can plan accordingly.

Kindy enrolments for 2020 are also filling fast and we ask that if you know of a family with a child turning four this year or five before June, please encourage them to call into the office as soon as possible to ensure they do not miss out on a place.

From the Secondary Deputy: Mrs Rebecca Kirkwood

Welcome back for the final term of 2019 and what an exciting one we have planned!  I love Term 4 because it’s always a great time to celebrate wonderful student achievement and to reflect on how we can build on that further in 2020.

This term we have a two pronged approach to transition. Week 5 will see the Year 6 students begin their transition into the secondary school.  They will start with short sessions and build to whole days as the term progresses.  Week 10 will see the Year 10 students commence their final transition phase into Eastern Goldfields College.  We wish both these cohorts of students the best of luck as they move into the next exciting phase of their schooling.

In Week 4 we had the pleasure of being visited by SIDEFFECT. All students were delivered very important information about substance use awareness and became acutely aware of the sad reality that one pill can kill. I encourage you to talk to your children more about this presentation so that they can be educated further and make an informed choice about engaging in these types of behaviours.

Finally, I again wish to remind families about the importance of students coming to school prepared and ready to learn.  Students need to be dressed in school uniform and wearing enclosed shoes.  They need to have a school bag containing lunch and recess, or money to purchase from the canteen. Children also need to have writing equipment such as a pen and writing books.  Please check with your children that they have all they need to complete their year of learning. Thanks in advance for your support.

From the Primary Deputy : Miss Kayla Quin

Summer Lightning Carnival

During Week Two our Year 5/6 students travelled into Kalgoorlie to participate in the annual Summer Lightning Carnival. Our three teams competed against other Goldfield’s schools in touch rugby, cricket and tee ball. Thank you to Mr Bilton, Mrs Larkin and Mrs Trail for supervising our teams and thank you to Ms Alexander for driving our bus so that students were able to attend.

Playgroup

I would like to thank all families within the community who have been bringing children along to our weekly playgroup. We have had an increasing number of children attending each week to enjoy fun, structured play activities. Playgroup will continue to run for the remainder of the year and we hope to continue to offer Playgroup in the 2020 year. A huge thank you and acknowledgement to Mrs Trail and Mrs Lawrence for their work each week towards these beneficial sessions. They allow all families to develop a relationship with our school community, other parents and meet local support agencies.

Kindergarten 2020

An information session for parent/carers with children entering Kindergarten in 2020 will be held on Friday 29th November at 9am in the Parent Room. Here you will be provided with information in regards to the Kindy Come and Try day in Week Eight and details about Kindergarten in 2020 at KWDHS.

Attendance

It is important we work together to continue to achieve consistent student attendance throughout the remainder of the year. Thank you to all families for your support in ensuring your child attends school each day. Congratulations to Room 10 who won Term Four’s first attendance reward holding a 90% attendance average since the beginning of term. We have our whole school end of year inflatable sports day organised for Monday 9th December as an incentive for students to maintain an attendance rate of 90% and above for the remainder of the year.

Pre Kindy Play Group - Every Monday Morning 8.45am to 10.30am
