Term 1 Week 8 2023

News from the Principal

Dear Parents / Carers,

School Discos Wrap Up

It was wonderful to have so many students attend our three discos recently. The students had a wonderful time and enjoyed the dancing, games and fun. Thank you to the Governing Council for managing the canteen on the night. Thank you also to the school leaders and staff that came along and supervised. A great event, enjoyed by all involved.

Parent / Teacher Interviews

This week we distributed the Parent / Teacher Interviews information and the important QR booking code. Interviews will be held in Week 10 of Term 1, 3rd to 6th April. We look forward to seeing families and reporting on Term 1 improvement and progress. Interview bookings will close on Thursday, 30th March at 5:00 pm. If you did not receive the information it is available in the Newsletter today.

Easter Public Holidays

On Friday, 7th and Monday, 10th April, the school will be closed for the Easter holiday weekend. The OSHC is also closed on these two days. Please enjoy the long weekend with family and friends.

Term 1 Final Day Dismissal

On Friday, 14th April, we conclude Term 1. A reminder that all students are dismissed at 2:00 pm. The OSHC will be operating on this day and throughout the holiday break. The vacation program is included in the Newsletter today. Please enjoy a well-earned holiday. If you are traveling, enjoy the opportunity and please be safe on the roads. Looking forward to seeing everyone back at school on Monday, 1st May 2023, for Term 2.

New School Website Launch

Friday, 31st March will be an exciting day as we launch our new school website. This initiative is part of updating and improving communication systems in 2023. We will publish the new link to the community (and it will be searchable online) on this day. The design, information, photos, video and drone footage is all looking very modern and engaging. This is stage one with additional information and features to be added in phase two, during Term 2. We will be keen to have your feedback and comments as the website is designed to serve the school and wider community. Feedback can be passed to our email address at any point. dl.0219.info@schools.sa.edu.au

Assembly Video Change

This Friday we are changing our process from an Assembly live-stream to a recorded video, posted a little later in the day. It is important that we respect ‘no photo’ students / families involved in Assembly, classroom presentations. Our priority is students having the opportunity and experience to present over needing it ‘live’. The video will allow us to edit out some classes and students. It will also enable us to increase the quality for the new website, going forward. As always we encourage families with students presenting to join us and attend the Assembly ‘live’, where possible.

Largs Bay School Centenary Committee 2024

By the end of March the Largs Bay School Centenary 2024 will feature on the new school website, with a new centenary logo. The School Leadership Team and Governing Council is beginning to form a Centenary History & Events Committee to begin work in Term 2. We are looking for keen staff, parents and community members to get involved now and then into 2024. Please let me know if you would like more information about the new committee or to be involved. dl.0219.info@schools.sa.edu.au

SkoolBag

LBS uses the SkoolBag system to communicate on a daily basis. It is very important that all parents and carers join this service to receive key and urgent information about dates, events, news, policies and emergency procedures.

Simply go to the Apple App or Google Play Store, search for Skoolbag and download the App. Follow the instructions to establish an account and then join Largs Bay School. It is very easy and takes just a few minutes.

Covid-19 Protocols

  • Anyone testing positive to COVID-19 must notify the school immediately.

  • There is no longer a set quarantine period for a positive case, however, 5 days remains strongly recommended by Health SA.

  • Students cannot return to school until they are fully ‘Covid-19 symptom free’.

  • If you become a classroom / close contact It is still best practice to test every second day for 7 days.

  • Communication of positive cases to school families remains in place, however, this will be simplified in Term 2.

 Covid-19 Positive Cases

It is particularly important that any positive Covid-19 student case as well as the positive test date are immediately reported to the school. Please phone the LBS Front Office on phone 84492000, or email dl.0219.info@schools.sa.edu.au.

Please do not send to school any child/ren showing any of the symptoms of Covid-19. If a child is unwell at school, they go home immediately, the sick room will be for a very short-term stay.

School Leadership Team

The Largs Bay School Leadership Team welcomes you to the 2023 school year. We are here to support your family and manage questions and issues that arise with open communication.

Kind regards,

John Burns

Classroom News

Bahasa Indonesia

All classes have been working very hard and showing BERKEMAUAN KERAS (persistence) with their learning so far this year. We started the year by looking at our Largs Bay School values and how we can show them around the school and in Indonesian lessons.

Students have also been creating a personal profile where they have been sharing information about themselves such as their name, age, family members and favourite things such as colour, food, book or hobby. These profiles have been presented in a variety of ways from a flower, jigsaw piece, poster and super hero.

Our Reception classes have learnt a song about greetings called ‘Selamat Pagi’ and Room 4 have been brave enough to present it at this week’s assembly. They even made an Indonesian headband to wear while performing.  Bagus sekali!

Terima kasih everyone for all your hard work this term!

STEM With Elese Wolstencroft

It has been so amazing being welcomed into the Largs bay community this term with such warmth and lots of happy smiles. I have really enjoyed getting to know all about our amazing students here at Largs, and being a part of their learning journey. This term so far in STEM we have been having lot of fun! The year 5 and 6 students have begun 3d printing prototypes of their products to help when natural disaster strikes. As part of this learning, students were very excited to welcome the SES to school to show us all of their tools and equipment to inspire their designs. Our year 3 and 4 students have been exploring engineering principals and factors such as gravity to impact design. We had lots of fun exploring the role gravity plays when looking into the design of rollercoasters. We have also been exploring the concept of biomimicry- when engineers use nature as an inspiration for new and useful inventions. Our Reception, year 1 and 2 students have been learning how to record the design process through modelling, drawing, writing and describing. We have had lots of fun making and evaluating our creations this term.

Room 11

'This term in HASS, we have been looking at the First Fleet Convicts and the Colonization of Australia. In week 4, we worked together in collaboration to create a poster on the Colonization of Australia and the British Settlers. We worked extremely hard on these posters over the past 3-4 weeks. Here is a snapshot of the amazing posters that were created, as you can see, we are very proud of what we have made.' - Eleanor and Dayne, Room 11

Room 14

This term during Art room 14 has been working on creating shape art inspired by artist Paul Klee.

Paul Klee was a Swiss-German artist who became one of the most famous painters of the 20th century. He, along with Picasso, were the first to contribute to a form of art that came to be known as “abstraction”. He made over 10,000 paintings, drawings and etchings in his lifetime and his work has been exhibited all over the world.

We are so excited to see the end result!

Room 16

Room 16 students have been exploring narrative writing. We have learnt about Sizzling Starts, Complications (pebble, rock and boulder) and Exciting Endings. We are very excited to start writing our own narratives. We have also been exploring Place Value in Maths. We have learnt about the value of each place in a number (hundreds, tens and ones) and how we can count numbers efficiently. Please view the photos below that shows us counting numbers efficiently!

Room 23

This week, we have been working hard (including doing NAPLAN!) while also having a great time celebrating Harmony Week. We learnt a Caribbean cultural dance, drew pictures of ourselves to display showing how unique we are as individuals and enjoyed dressing up in orange to celebrate Harmony. It has been a great week.

Room 33

In Writing, we have been exploring Narratives. We have looked at the structure of a narrative and learnt the main components which include the orientation, complication and resolution. Students identified and wrote the beginning, middle and end of the fairy tale, The Three Little Pigs. Take a look at some of our writing.
