Henley Beach Primary School Newsletter

Term 4 week 2 - Wednesday 26 October 2022

From the Principal - Stephen Jolley

Welcome back to Term 4. We are looking forward to a positive and busy term ahead, with many important activities and events occurring, including: transition days (for both yr 6s moving to high school and new reception students starting at our school next year), yr 6 Graduation, SAPSASA sport, swimming lessons and our end of year celebration. Details for these events will be shared with the community once planning has been finalised.

Our Year 6 students returned home last Friday from their trip to Woodhouse Activity Centre and it was an enjoyable experience for our students who had the opportunity to participate in a variety of fun and engaging activities. It was also great to hear many positive comments about how well behaved and collaborative our students were. A special thanks to Tracey Buckley and Neil Wuttke who coordinated the camp and other staff members for assisting. Our parent helpers also provided fantastic support.

Congratulations to our Tournament of the Minds team who, on the weekend prior to the start of term, travelled to Canberra to compete in the national competition. The team did very well, achieving second place. Our team, composed of Grace, Lulu, Ethan, Athan, Sophie and Amelia, represented our school in an exceptional manner and are to be commended on their efforts. Thank you to Neil Wuttke and Tracey Buckley who accompanied the students and also to the parents who also made the trip.

World Teachers Day

Friday is World Teachers Day and is an opportunity to acknowledge the important role teachers have in our community. Like many occupations in recent years, teachers have encountered challenging circumstances brought about by the presence of COVID-19, however they have always kept the needs of the students central to their work. Thank you to all of our teachers for their ongoing commitment and efforts.

Staffing Update

This term Fred Peters has returned to his teaching role in the year 4 classroom; thank you to Tracy Marks and Grant Perelman for taking the class last term. Louise Faulkner will be continuing her leave this term which will mean that the arrangements in place for term 3 will continue (Michael Boere: Wellbeing, Kylie Cook-Gagnon: Early years literacy and Alecia Cailes: Special Education). Louise’s role was a 12 month position meaning she won’t be working at our school next year. In the short time Louise was with us she made a strong contribution to our school community and we wish her all the best.

In regards to future staffing arrangements, Aileen Clancy’s position as Assistant Principal has been extended for a further 2 years. Over the past 3 years Aileen has made a strong contribution to the school’s teaching and learning priorities and organisational perspectives and the extension of her tenure will support continuity in these areas.

In canteen news, Julie Stamatialis will be retiring from her position as canteen manager on Friday November 11. Julie has managed the canteen for 17 years and has overseen lots of changes in this area and been strongly committed to providing this service to the school community. One of the key developments that Julie has contributed to is the provision of a menu that has an emphasis on food items being prepared and cooked by the canteen team. On behalf of the community, we thank Julie for her commitment and efforts.

2023 Class Planning

Based on predicted enrolments for next year, we expect to have 14 mainstream classes along with our Junior Primary Special Options class. From the beginning of this term, our school will be starting the process of student placement in classrooms for 2023. Due to grade level cohort numbers it is anticipated that the mainstream classes will be a mixture of single year level and composite year levels. There are a range of factors that inform the placement process including learner achievement, work habits, behaviour, gender and social and emotional needs. The goal is to create classes that have a balanced profile across all of these perspectives. Families of children in a composite class may have queries about how their child’s learning and social needs are met in these arrangements; a question and answer section that has been provided below that provides further information about this area.

If parents/caregivers believe they have information, based on educational needs, which will help in your child’s placement, please put this information in a letter addressed to the Principal, marked ‘Confidential’. All requests need to be received, in writing, by Monday 7th November. Please be aware that this process is not about selecting teachers for your child but rather providing information for the school to consider. We cannot promise that every request will be met, however, all information will be taken into consideration. Alternatively, if your child will not be attending Henley Beach next year, please inform their teacher or the front office.

Composite Class Frequently Asked Questions

Why do schools have composite classes?

Composite classes are a practical solution to managing the varied enrolment numbers at each year level through balancing the available levels of resourcing to create classes that are within Department for Education’s recommended class sizes. Some schools actually create composite classes, even when they don’t need to, for the educational, social and emotional benefit of children.

Are there any advantages or disadvantages for a child in a composite class?

Research confirms that there is no academic disadvantage for children placed in a composite class. Successful learning is less dependent on organisational strategies (such as composite or single year levels) than on the quality of the teaching and instructional practices. Older children in a composite class can develop maturity and consolidate their learning by being role models and peer tutors for the younger children in the class. The younger children can develop more rapidly by having these interactions with older children. Schools will strive to organise opportunities for children in a composite class to mix with their same age peers in formal and informal learning and play situations.

How does the teacher of a composite class cater for the needs of children over such a range of ages?

All teachers have to cater for a range of ages and abilities of the children in their class. Within a single year level the academic age range of students can be up to 18 months – 2 years. Planning and programming is based on the Australian Curriculum achievement standard for the grade levels within the class. Further to this, teachers of the same year levels will collaboratively plan the majority of curriculum areas to ensure consistency across classrooms.

How are composite classes formed?

Some parents/carers may have the view that their child has been placed in a composite class due to concerns around their learning – this is not the case. The school strives to ensure all classes, whether they are a single year level or composite, have a balanced profile that reflects an equal distribution of academic achievement, social and emotional needs and gender.

Kindy Transition Visits

On weeks 4, 6 and 8 of this term the 2023 intake of reception students will have the opportunity to participate in transition visits to Henley Beach. The purpose of the transition visits is to familiarise the children with our school environment and help them get a sense of school life. We look forward to them, and their families, joining our school community.

Materials and Services Information for 2023

Recently correspondence was provided on Skoolbag regarding the proposed Materials and Services fees for next year. The materials and services charge is intended to cover the cost of essential core materials and services students use and access during the school year, this includes the cost of items such as:

· Stationery (pens, pencils, workbooks, photocopied material).

· Library resources.

· Access to student information technology and other curriculum equipment.

As a part of this process there is an opportunity for parents/carers to attend a meeting where school leadership and Governing Council representation will be present to discuss this proposal. Please note that the date for this meeting is Tuesday 1st November, at 6.30pm. In lieu of attendance at the meeting, parents/carers may express their views in writing to the chairperson of the school council prior to the meeting.

Please email:

Motions to be put to the regular Governing Council meeting following general discussions are as follows:

Motion 1: “That the Henley Beach Primary School Governing Council approve the Materials and Services (M&S) Charge for 2023 being set at $380.00”.

Motion 2: “That the Henley Beach Primary School Governing Council determine to conduct a poll of parents and carers seeking endorsement that the ‘prescribed sum’ (Total M&S fees) be legally recoverable”

Following this meeting, a polling process will be undertaken with the school community.

Tournaments of Minds Canberra - Neil Wuttke

Tournament of Minds is a creative problem solving competition for primary and secondary students. It has been going for 30 years in South Australia. Henley Beach primary has been involved for the past 11 years. Our teams have always achieved good results in the past. We had three teams this year, with one team winning the State Final and representing South Australia at the Toms International Final. The team performed exceptionally well and was awarded Honours, or second place, at the International Final against teams from every state and New Zealand.

After winning the State Final the team needed to attend the SA teams practice day on Sunday 18 September. The whole day was required in order to show the teams how the TIF – Tournament International Final would happen.

Next the team of Grace, Sophie, Amelia, Lulu. Ethan and Athan (Luciana was unable to go as she was on Holiday in Europe) had to raise funds to help lower the cost to attend the TIF in Canberra. They worked hard to help with the BBQ and the Cake Stall along with some donations  and were able to raise $1700. A fantastic amount which was divided amongst the students. A massive thankyou to Nicole and her helpers who ran the cake stall. Thanks to Jim who helped with the BBQ. We would also like to thank Foodland at Henley Square for their $150 donation and a big thankyou to Wish Hair at Glenelg for their $250 donation.

The team was chaperoned by Mrs Buckley who did a great job, as I was already in Canberra to help set up and run the final. They had to be at the airport by 4.20am to catch their flight to Canberra. On the Thursday afternoon the team visited Questicon and looked around the city.

Friday was the official opening of the TIF at Parliament House. In the afternoon the team visited the National Art Gallery.

Saturday was competition day. It started very early and involved a three hour challenge to solve and present to the judges, as well as another spontaneous question to answer.

After dinner at the Australian National University the Awards were presented.

Our school team was awarded Honours, the same as second place in their discipline. A fantastic achievement for a great team of students from Henley Beach Primary.

Thanks to the parents for their support and all the students who bought a sausage or cake to help finance the student’s trip.

Year 6 School Camp - Neil Wuttke and Tracey Buckley

By Darshini B

On Wednesday 19 October the year 6’s left for an exciting journey to our second camp. We would be spending 2 nights and 3 days so we said our goodbyes and left for Woodhouse Adventure camp. After a 50-minute drive we arrived and welcomed ourselves into an epic adventure.

On the first day we took things easy. We were spilt into 2 groups based on our dorms: odd and even. The first thing we did (we were evens) was teamwork challenges like lining up in order and getting a marble into a tub. Next, we climbed a mountain up to tricky obstacles that led to… Challenge Hill! We fit through tight gaps, balanced on wobbly logs and even dived into a creek! We had a quick snack and went over to the next activity, ice blocking. Ice blocking is where you sit on an ice block and slide down a grassy hill. You will have a mat to sit on and a rope to hold on, and then you just zzzooooooooooooommmmm! Then we all sat down for dinner and after that we all gathered around for minute to win it. It’s like where one person from each dorm competes in a challenge to win points and tickets for your team! It was really fun.

The next day we went a little more extreme and we played 3 epic games of laser skirmish! We had a large area of field to play in. We hid, we shoot, we won, we lost. It was a lot of fun!! Then we moved onto the next activity which was geocaching, it was a bit like orienteering. You find tubes with a compass and a map which has questions you would have to answer. The next fun thing we did was tube slide! It is where you take a tube like floaty and take it ALLLLLLL the way up a hill and then you SLIDDDDDEEEE down with or without a partner. There were also sprinklers throughout the slide which left you soaking every time. It was incredibly heavy to take the slide up and my shoulder hurt for the next few days. After lunch, we headed down to a bouldering which was played indoors and outdoors and the best part was the challenges. We had to hang on for as long as possible, and we had climbing relays where you had to touch the top first. Then we went down for dinner and went out for campfire. We sang 2 different songs and went out for a night walk. We spotted a possum and a sleeping koala! Then we had a hunt for Minties! We all searched in the dark without our torches for coin sized sweets in a large area of grass.

The next day we woke up with a sharp whistle screech and Mr Wuttke’s voice. Straight away we packed up and we headed down for breakfast. For the last 2 activities, we went up to challenge hill again and re did some of the obstacles, we also did some new ones. Then we headed down for disc golf which was actually really fun. We had to go in groups and each take turns to get a frisbee into a net from a distance in the least amount of throws possible. We had to go through 9 nets! Then we had lunch, said goodbye and left Woodhouse camp.

Overall, camp was one of my best experiences in Henley Beach primary. I loved the food, the activities, and the memories we made. I wish I could go there again.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB - Linda Dickman

Last book club for the Year. Closes Thursday 1 November

EcoWarriors – School Upcycling Competition - Nancy Coleman

We do RECYCLING every day at Henley Beach Primary! This term the EcoWarriors are focusing on UPCYCLING. They have launched a School Upcycling Competition. Students are invited to design and make an entry, turning rubbish/waste items into something new. The Ecowarriors have explored some ideas using milk bottles, paper and plastic bags, but any waste can be used – old clothes and shoes, tin cans, jam jars, plastic packaging etc. There are heaps of ideas on the internet about upcycling! Students can enter as individuals or small groups, with entries due in by the end of week 4. The only rule is that entries have to be made from waste/rubbish/old items, nothing new should be bought.

CANTEEN - Julie Stamatialis

As mentioned in today's newsletter I am resigning from my role on 11 November.

This is not a decision I have made easily but, the recent loss of my beloved husband has made it difficult for me to give my best to my job as canteen manager.  I have now been at Henley Beach Primary School for nearly 17 years.

Not surprisingly the changes were a hit.  The time moved on and with that came much healthier expectation of their school canteen.  This meant a few more changes and around 2009 we decided to “rip the bandaid off” and made wholesale changes to both food and snacks.

In 2015 QKR was introduced. I believe Henley was the first primary school to use this platform and we had some interesting times learning how to use it. At the same time we revamped the menu to include sushi, cold rolls, fresh chicken burgers and butter chicken among other meals.  We were swamped with orders! Everyone loved QKR and the menu but our lovely volunteers began to return to paid employment and I was left to handle the new menu with very little volunteer help - Shannon Pittman on Fridays.

An ‘executive’ decision to pare back the menu saved everyone’s sanity and we continued to this day with fresh items made as much as possible by us.

Over the years, I have been fortunate to work with many people who I still call friends.  From Shane Misso, Jan Taylor, Ana, Cheryl, Lorren, Rosemary and Shannon to the many volunteers. You all saved the day many times when things went pear-shaped as they do in the food industry. To those past and present who have helped and continue to help me in the canteen,  many, many thanks. Your help is and was invaluable and always appreciated.

Lastly, to the parents and children who make this school the beautiful community that it is.  Thank you for your continued support of the canteen.  I know you all appreciate how unique it is to have a successful canteen in today’s challenging climate and that you will continue to support your canteen for years to come.

Bye for now.

Kind regards,

Julie Stamatialis Canteen manager
