Newsletter - Self Reliance since 1884

Term 1 Week 4 - 17 February 2022

Dear Parents,

Class Information Sheets for 2022

This year we are unable to hold our Meet the Teacher information sessions face to face. Each grade will soon send home an Information Sheet about what your child needs, in their class to be a successful learner and what might be some special events or activities happening this year for their grade. This information will also include the teaching staff on their grade and an outline of the curriculum.

Updating your Child’s Information

This week the office have been sending home student contact information that needs to be checked. The school needs to be able to contact parents/carers and therefore need the most current details. It is extremely important to check your contact phone numbers, emergency contact people and their phone numbers and your address. If any details have changed, please make the changes, and sign the form. Please send this back-to-school ASAP. If your residential address is different to what is listed on the sheet you will need to provide the school with proof of this change before we can make the corrections on the computer system.

Student Leaders for 2022

Our student leaders for 2022 were announced at the end of 2021. On Wednesday they were presented with their special hats and pledged, in front of their peers, to be exemplary student leaders. Their photos have been displayed in the office foyer and their names will be engraved on the new honour board that was given by the Class of 2021 Year 6 students as a departing gift to the school.

Our Sports Captain elections were held this week and our new leaders of the houses are:

Bradman Captains – Riston and Amy. Vice Captains – Don and Lucy

Elliot Captains – Adrian and Diana. Vice Captains – Brandon and Quynh

Fraser Captains – Jivanta and Sidney. Vice Captains – Liam and Bernice

Gould Captains – Minhy and Ava. Vice Captains – Callum and Giselle

Our sports house captains also received their hats and badges and pledged in front of their peers to be great role models and display good sportsmanship at all times.

Congratulations to all our 2022 student leaders.

Twosday Mufti Day on 22 February 2022

Next Tuesday it is 22/2/22 and our Year 6 students are having a mufti day fundraiser. A special note is included in our newsletter. Year 6 are asking for a gold coin donation to start their fundraising for the year. We are encouraging all staff and students to think about the number two. Maybe two funny socks, a tutu, two ties, two shirts, two pig tails, etc. Teachers have a list of 22 activities that they might participate in with their classes during the day. All students must wear appropriate closed in shoes and sun safe appropriate clothing.

COVID Intensive Learning Support Program

The NSW Government has financed the COVID Intensive Learning Support Program (COVID ILSP) for another 12 months. This means that an additional $383m will be spent on small group tuition in schools across the state. This will ensure that those students, affected by COVID-19 and extended periods of learning from home, will continue to be supported in their learning - particularly in the areas of literacy and numeracy.

Throughout the year different students across P-6 will be identified to work in small group sessions with one of our COVID ILSP teachers. These 25–30 minute lessons will occur several times a week and student progress will be monitored carefully. If you have any questions at all about the COVID ILSP program, please contact the school.

COVID Notification Letters

When we are informed of a positive COVID case in our school community of either a staff member or student, we will send home a notification letter. This identifies the Stage of where the positive case was from. The notification letters are sent out if the staff member or student was on our school site when they may have been infectious.

If a student in attendance at school displays any cold or flu like symptoms, parents and/ or carers will be called to collect their child from the school office. The student will be required to take a PCR or RAT test and have a negative result before returning to school and without any symptoms.

We do understand that people have allergies. We ask that you obtain a certificate from your family doctor stating the allergies and symptoms. All students and staff members are asked to carry out a RAT test on Monday and Wednesday mornings before coming to school.

It is recommended that students and staff that return to school after recovering from COVID-19 do not participate in RAT surveillance for 28 days (four weeks after recovery) following release from self-isolation. This is due to NSW Health advice that people who have recovered from COVID-19 have a low risk of contracting it again in the following 28 days. After 28 days students and staff may then resume participation in RAT surveillance.

It is part of the Public Health Order to let our school know if a student tests positive to COVID-19. They must also record the result via the Services NSW App if the test is done via a rapid antigen test (RAT). Register a positive rapid antigen test (RAT) result | NSW Government

Swimming Carnival

Our annual swimming carnival was held today. The results will be announced in the next newsletter. Thank you to Ms Piniros and Ms Trieu for all your organisation. While we were only able to take the competitors this year, we do hope that more students will take up the opportunity to join the Swimming Scheme program which will be held in Term 4 this year. While this may not give them all the advanced skills to compete in the swimming carnival next year it will assist in improving their swimming ability for the future.

Preschool and Kindergarten

Our Preschool children and Kindergarten students are settling into daily routines very well. It has not been the start to a school year that we want for any child but under these circumstances the children have shown remarkable resilience and have adapted to the new routines very well. Thank you to our parents and carers for being so positive with your children and encouraging them to enjoy school life. It is lovely to see a hug and wave from the students  to their families as they come through the gates and a big smile (some under the mask) reassuring parents and carers that they enjoy coming to school.

Drop-off and Pick-up of Students

Our school gates are only open in the morning to our students and preschool children with their parents. Pevensey Street gate opens at 8:30am.

Our afternoon pick-up times will soon be changing. Please keep an eye out on announcements through the Skoolbag App.

We thank you for your continued understanding as we navigate the COVID safety guidelines. I look forward to seeing parents and carers at the gates or over at Adams Park when we restart our Walk and Talk mornings.

P&C Meeting

We will advertise our P&C dates for the year in our next newsletter. At this time, we are unable to have face to face P&C meeting on the school site during school hours. Last year we held some Zoom meetings. The P&C Executive will meet soon to discuss meeting options.

Lansdowne PSSA Term 1 and Zone PSSA Trials

Our school is not participating in PSSA competition against other schools in the Lansdowne area for Term 1. We will make the decision about Term 2 later this term. We will be involved in the Zone Swimming Carnival.

Interested students from Stage 3 (Years 5 & 6) were given an Expression of Interest (EOI) note to see if they wished to trial for particular sports at a Zone level. Theses notes need to be returned to Ms Borg and Ms Su as soon as possible as some sports have started trialling. Completing the EOI does not guarantee a student being given details about the trials. The school can only send a couple of students to each sport trial and they must have the skills for these representative sports.

Kind regards,

Margaret Creagh

Principal
