Richmond Christian College TIDINGS

Term 1 Week 5 . 2020

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

“We don’t get to choose if we lead people, we just get to choose where we lead them” Me.

At RCC this week we have had a particular focus on leadership. Our Year 6 Primary leaders attended the National Young Leaders Day in Brisbane. With over 400 other primary leaders, they were inspired to persevere and never give up on dreams no matter what. The speakers included: John Coutis (inspirational speaker), Erin Molan (media personality), Jackie French (author of Hitler’s Daughter and The Diary of a Wombat) and Bianca Chatfield (former vice-captain of the Australian Diamonds). What an opportunity!

The RCC Student Leadership team then spent some valuable time at Lighthouse Beach to vision and plan for 2020. It was brilliant to see all our captains, vice captains, SRC members and house leaders deliberately investing in their leadership talents. The Primary team decided their leadership would be like a massive tree; representing and inspiring perseverance, excitement and compassion amongst their peers. The Secondary team envisioned that they would seek to establish a community that would be like a banqueting table, where every person could bring their own flavour and share in what others have to offer.

It was an honour for Mr Hall and me to see the wonderful vision and passion that our students have for their peers and their local and global community. Each student grasped the reality that in life it is the people around us who decide if we are leaders or not. The responsibility then falls to us to choose wisely where we lead people, not if we lead them.

Similar to my thoughts in last Tidings, I am convinced that Christians leaders must also be distinctively different for a purpose. A strong leader does not seek to promote and glorify themselves, rather point people to a God who has the true ability to instil hope and purpose, enabling people to establish a strong foundation to grow upon. Good leaders seek God’s wisdom, strength and vision to build their influence of others to lead those who follow to a place of strength and truth bigger than they could offer.

Paul, one of Christianity’s greatest leaders, typifies this attitude when he encourages the Corinthians to realise that God’s grace is enough for us, His power is perfected in our weakness (1 Corinthians 12). He emphasises that we don’t need to be perfect. Paul even goes so far as to conclude that he will therefore boast about his weaknesses so that people realise how good, faithful and powerful God is.

Different right? Imagine raising a generation of leaders who recognise that it is not all about them; who know they do not hold all the answers and instead focus on what they can do for those around them to give them hope and purpose beyond one charismatic, influential leader.

Finally, congratulations to the Primary School Swimming Team (Henry, Charlotte, Hosanna, Zoe, Nyoka, Aaron and Abby) who represented so well at the zone carnival in Macksville. Further Congrats to Henry, Zoe, Aaron and Abby who recorded Christian School Sports Association State nominations. Well done!

Good tidings!

RCC’s sporting program provides wonderful opportunities for students interested in excelling in their favourite sports.

Last Friday, our Primary swimming team of 8 swimmers participated in the CSSA North Coast Zone Primary Swimming Carnival in Macksville. From this event 5 swimmers were offered the opportunity to represent the North Coast Zone and participate in the State CSSA Swimming Carnival at Blacktown in Sydney on Monday 9 March.  Congratulations to Abby and Hosanna Mallam, Zoe Kuiper, Henry Strahan and Aaron Hanna.  On Monday, 2 March, our Secondary team will attend the CSSA North Coast Secondary Carnival in Grafton.

Earlier this month, as part of the State Christian School Sports Association (CSSA) U15 cricket team, Anthony McPhail attended the State Combined Independent Schools (CIS) 15yrs & Under Cricket trials in Sydney. Other students have also been invited to attend the All Schools Primary Girls AFL trials in Coffs Harbour.

Next week, Pierce Bull will represent RCC at the State CIS Primary Boys AFL trials and Matthew Simmons will represent at the CSSA State Primary Boys Football (Soccer) trials, both in Sydney.

This year we will also be participating in zone carnivals and gala days such as athletics, touch football, soccer, netball, basketball, 5-a side soccer and inter-school or association games in basketball, netball, touch and cricket.

If you have a child who is interested and talented in a particular sport, including those not mentioned in this article (eg. equestrian, gymnastics, triathlon, biathlon, secondary hockey, secondary union etc), who has participated in regular seasons for consecutive years and may have been selected in development squads or even won awards or represented our region, please see me as there may be opportunities for them to progress within the CSSA, CIS or All Schools sport schools network and trial for state teams.

Yours in sport,

NATIONAL YOUNG LEADERS DAY - BRISBANE

On Monday 24th of February the Year 6 leaders went to National Young Leaders day. On the day we met many speakers including John Coutis, Jackie French, Erin Molan and Bienka Chatfield. They taught us how to become better leaders but in different ways. John Coutis told us his life story and how he got bullied at school and why he decided to get his legs amputated. His lesson to us was to have self discipline.

Our next speaker was Jackie French. She is a famous writer who has written 200 books about dyslexia. She told us that because of dyslexia it is hard to write and when she does write it is very hard to read. She taught us that ideas are more important than neatness. She told us that she only realised the year before how much effort teachers put in, to even read her writing. She is very thankful for all the effort teachers put into reading her writing and says we should be thankful for what our teachers do for us as well.

Our next speaker was Erin Molan. She is the first woman to host a NRL show on the Nine Network.  She shared her story about how when she went for the job the first time she didn’t get it but she never gave up and in the end she got her dream job. She also shared that when she had finished one of the shows she walked off and looked on Twitter and there were some very rude comments that made her feel angry and upset . After a talk with her dad she learned to ignore the bad comments. Her story taught us to never give up in hard times.

Our last speaker was Bienka Chatfield. She is a retired netball player who was the captain of the Australian Diamonds. She is also known for being a participant on the Block with friend Carla. She told us that when she started netball she was very young. When she played she wasn't very encouraged. All they would say is ´good job ´and that was it. When she became captain she realised that she needed to include everyone. And that was her lesson to us. We need to include everyone in all we do. She said that her view of a good leader is:

Leadership: setting a good example, encouraging others and guiding everyone to be on the path to success.

We have learnt many great things to help us become a better school leader. On behalf of all the Year 6 leaders we would like to thank Mrs Miller and Mrs Weingarth for taking us up to Brisbane.

Everyone had a great day.

RCC Student Leaders - VISION DAY

On Tuesday SRC students from Year 3 – Year 12 gathered together at Lighthouse Beach with Mr Hall and Mr Simmons to talk about the qualities of being a good leader at Richmond Christian College.

Throughout the Vision day we learnt valuable lessons about how to be good leaders through a range of team related activities. Some of the activities included “Toxic Custard” where we had to work as a team to make it across to the other side of the room on four pieces on paper without touching the toxic custard! “Lego Masterpiece” was another team activity which involved recreating Mr Hall’s Lego design giving only verbal instructions to our team members.

Some of the skills we learnt that are needed to be good leaders at school include perseverance, teamwork, supportiveness and selflessness.

The Primary Student Representative Council decided that the three main principles we wish to be known for as leaders at RCC are to be compassionate, persistent and exciting. We drew a tree to represent these principles because a tree symbolises compassion through the shade they provide; persistence because trees drop their seeds and continue to grow; and excitement because you can climb it and tie a swing to it.

Thanks to Mr Hall and Mr. Simmons for running a great day where we all learnt lots. We really appreciate the time and effort involved in preparing for this day.

VISION DAY - RCC STUDENT LEADERS

Brainstorm Productions perform at RCC

On Wednesday 26 February,  Brainstom productions performed 2 shows. One to  Year 1 - Year 6 entitled "The H Team" and one to Year 7 - Year 11 entitled "The Flipside".

The H Team is an exciting adventure story which inspires students to take responsibility for their own behaviour and wellbeing.

Cal and Mindi are accidentally transported from the safety of the 'H Zone' and left without their positive mindsets. Peer pressure and social media make Mindi anxious and competitive. Cal becomes isolated and obsessed with junk food and aggressive video games. Struggling with low self-esteem, they succumb to bullying and excessive screen time.

They must learn to critically evaluate the media, stand up to bullying and make good decisions.

The H Team fosters teamwork, impulse control, and resilience, to create healthy and harmonious school communities.

The Flipside is a performance that highlights the importance of personal responsibility, empathy and values in the online world.

When bullying and revenge are used to wield power, Jack and Ella realise they must create an ethical roadmap to navigate the online world. When people post words or images, how will they be received? What will be the consequences?

The Flipside challenges students' perspectives on what's humorous, toxic, private, humiliating, informative, safe or appropriate online. The performance encourages them to think critically about their online values and behaviour, and provides strategies for respectful communication.

Compass Conference for Student Leaders

Our year 12 student leaders Rachel, Paris and Emma off to the Compass Conference in Canberra with our SRC Student Leader Mr Hall.

ABOUT COMPASS CONFERENCE

Why?

Many young adults struggle to see how their faith applies to their daily lives, their work and the issues of our world. Thousands lose their faith every month and are sidelined from living lives of Christian influence because they don’t see how the Gospel changes everything.

The Student Leaders Conference aims to address this disconnect by looking at how the Bible shapes our worldviews, and by wrestling with the implications of the Gospel upon issues of culture and society.

We want to see young adults challenged to live as leaders who faithfully translate the Gospel into the culture around them.

"The atmosphere during this conference was amazing! I am looking forward to going to school confident in my faith and knowing that I have grown closer to others in my team."

What?

The Student Leaders Conference is a four-day residential conference in Canberra for Year 11 or 12 student leaders. Through the Biblical themes of creation, fall and redemption, students will be encouraged to wrestle with how their faith and life connect.

Activities include lectures and discussion forums, as well as organised visits to the Federal Parliament, the Australian War Memorial, and our World-famous bush dance!

Who is it for?

The Student Leaders Conference is aimed at emerging leaders who have demonstrated the potential to be influencers for Christ in society. Students who are willing to thoughtfully and actively engage will benefit the most.
