Bring Your Own Device 2022

BYOD is compulsory for year 7 to College 2. A device is a small laptop, tablet or Chromebook – not a phone! Every student from Year 7 to College 2 is required to bring a device to school every day. We don't encourage expensive devices. This link to our website provides info on suggested affordable devices: LBHS BYOD Website

We understand that it can be difficult to afford devices, especially if there are multiple children in the family. Please feel free to contact our CLO Ms Rosa-Maria Hormis to discuss this confidentially. Ms Hormis can offer information and assistance regarding loans, financial assistance and affordable devices.

Class of 2022!

Congratulations on Graduating College 2! On the 21st September College 2 had celebrated with family and friends on the Graduation. It was a wonderful celebration where our students were acknowledged for their achievements at Liverpool Boys High School. It’s been a big year for College 2 with continual fundraisers, paintball, and a picnic to top it all off! It has been a great honour to be Year Advisor to the class of 2022 – they are a remarkable group of individuals and I wish them all success in their upcoming HSC examinations and Big Picture Portfolio entries! I am looking forward to celebrating all their hard work and achievements at the formal on the 29th November 2022!

Secretary's Award for Outstanding School Initiative- Literacy Numeracy Framework

On the 6th September 2022, Liverpool Boys High School received the Secretary's Award for Outstanding School Initiative- Literacy Numeracy Framework. This is a well deserving award as our Literacy and Numeracy team have worked incredibly hard to implement change in the school within this area.

Students at Liverpool Boys High School have long under performed in literacy and numeracy as evidenced by NAPLAN and other external standardised tests. So, in 2021 Liverpool Boys High School developed a set of Literacy and Numeracy Framework Expectations, based on a 3-level framework (Level 3 equates to about National Minimum Standard/Stage 4).

Students were explicitly taught literacy and numeracy in both Year 7 and 8. Students were mapped to the expectations and evidence of their progress was collected. Pre and post testing outcomes have been impressive, and a testament to the effort our team and school. The number of level 3 Year 7 students doubled to 40%, while level 3 for writing also increased from 3% to 20%. Similarly, numeracy was just as successful with level 3 increasing from 31% to 56%.

Congratulations to our Literacy and Numeracy team on this deserving recognition!!

Koori Knockout 2022

More than 35,000 players, officials and spectators travelled to the NSW South Coast for the 50th anniversary of the Koori Knockout. The carnival has grown to encompass more than 155 teams and plays an important role in the development of Aboriginal culture and talent.

The Koori Knockout may be a football tournament, but to the Indigenous community it means so much more. It brings First Nations people together, especially for those who live in rural and remote areas. Many NRL stars received their big break at the knockout and each year return to where it all began. All players involved in the (regardless of age) tournament cannot wait to see their “Super stars” up close (Latrell Mitchell, Cody Walker, Jack Wighton, Josh Addo-Car and many more).

Our very own Year 10 student Demesi played in the knockout for the Campbelltown Ghosts, and Head Teacher PDHPE Mr Adam Reid refereed the Grand Final.

The event was reported by popular media channels. Watch this ABC news clip to see Demesi featured: Koori Knockout ABC news video

Mr Marando receives Service Award

Congratulations to Mr Marando, for receiving the School Sport Australia Service Award for his ongoing commitment and dedication in the Sport of Football. It is the highest accolade and most prestigious award a teacher can receive, and we are very fortunate to have the quality of his skill set at LBHS. Wishing Mr Marando good luck on his upcoming tour of the United Kingdom with the Australian School Boys Football team in January!

Amazing Race- HBHM

Healthy Body, Healthy Mind PDHPE class participated in an Amazing Race style excursion in Sydney CBD, Thursday 20th Oct- ‘How well do you know your backyard adventure’

18 Students were split into teams and handed envelopes with protocols, map and clues. Together they mapped out their action plans. Students were given a set of clues to find various locations and landmarks around Sydney CBD. Each clue was worth a number of points. The group to get the most points with photo evidence wins.

Groups checked in every 30mins by uploading photos to google classroom. Photos had to include every student within the group. Students were encouraged to take creative photos as these will be used for their final assessment, board game design.

As well as photo evidence, students had to track their steps throughout the day and share their total steps as part of the task. The average amount of steps taken was 20,000!

In total there were 72 clues/locations with 16 of these mandatory. Some of the key locations were, Circular Quay, Chinatown, State Theatre, Hyde Park, Barangaroo, Harbour Bridge, Myer Wonderland Giftorium, QVB, Chinese Garden and many more.

Over the course of the day students were able to use various modes of transport to travel through the CBD, we had some students use e-scooters and access ferry and light rail services.

The Sydney CBD community are fantastic and supportive of our students participating in this adventure. We had police officers jump into photos, retail assistants willingly re-arrange their stores to assist with creative photos, commuters interviewed by students and many people wanting to know more about the excursion.

It is rare to find a school excursion like this. Students are given complete independence throughout the day; they are on this mission without staff walking every step alongside them. Hence the implementation of buddy systems and 30min check ins. Staff have each students contact number and throughout the day are able to check in and meet students at certain locations. Preparation for this excursion began right at the beginning of the course to ensure students and staff were comfortable enough to venture out.

For most of the students this is the first time they have been to Sydney CBD or visited some of the listed locations. It’s an incredibly fun and different day. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind school related activity to generate this kind of enthusiasm.

This is an adventure that both students and staff love participating in, and we already can’t wait for the next one!

High Performance and Gifted Education Day

In the last week of Term 2, our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students attended a High Performance and Gifted Education Day held at Warwick Farm Public School. Our amazing day included students from the Liverpool schools and started with a performance from Warwick Farm Stage 3 students. They shared their research highlighting Aboriginal role models, past and present and they then performed 'The Children Came Back'.

Aunty Norma taught all the students and staff how to introduce themselves to others using the Dharag language before moving into groups of their mob where they highlighted totems and places of significance.

Students from preschool to Year 12 attended and enjoyed a variety of games and cultural activities and discussions. Connections were made where age was not a barrier.

We are all looking forward to future events to continue building community.

Staff vs Student – Volleyball Report

Multi-Cultural day marked an important time in the LBHS sports calendar. The staff wore the school athletics singlets with pride and defeated the students 5 sets to 1 in Volleyball. Congratulations to College 2, who narrowly defeated the staff team in the final set (fatigue and age did play a role). All staff and students really enjoyed how the school gathered around and supported the athleticism and skill set shown by all players. College 2 definitely showed the younger year groups that anything is possible if you work as a team.

Debating

Congratulations to our Year 7/8 Debating Team, who won their last debate on the 22nd August!

The topic of their last debate was sport. They were on the negative team and argued that “all fighting sports like boxing and martial arts should not be banned”. They argued that these sports are these sports are important, have cultural connections and can be careers! They have developed their debating skills all throughout the term working hard during recess and sport sessions to develop the craft!

Well done to Harry, Golden, Samo, Ahyaan, and  their College 2 coach Adam Naser!

LBHS at SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE

In week 3 Term 3,  Year 9 and Year 10 students were nominated by teachers to take part in an awesome five-day Design,  Engineering and Creativity workshop, at the Sydney Opera House. 22 students chose to take up the challenge!

Students explored: how the Sydney Opera House was designed and built, and the history of the land itself.Students collaborated with students from Liverpool Girls and St Johns - with leading Australian architects, designers, technicians and artists to build skills in creative visualisation, design process and STEM thinking.

Our students made the most of every opportunity! Check out the video below- Filmed and edited by Sivani Yaddanapudi with event and site cinematography by Year 10 Big Picture student, Chace.

Book Week 2022 Celebration @ LBHS Library

Every year across Australia and since 1945, the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) https://www.cbca.org.au/ leads Book Week. CBCA is a volunteer-run and non-profit organization that aims at engaging the community with literature for young Australians, supporting the work of Australian writers and illustrators and promoting a lifelong love for reading. During this time, libraries celebrate Australian children's literature through various events e.g., author visits, stories, competitions, character parades, activities, and book displays. This 2022 Book Week theme is “Dreaming with eyes Open!"

We celebrated Book Week at our school in week 6 of term 3 by hosting Matthew Lin (Manga / Graphic Illustrator) who did 2 presentations in the hall for the year 7 cohort and several students in years 8, 9 and 10 nominated by teachers.

Matthew Lin is an illustrator, designer, graphic novel, and manga artist. He creates his work both through digital media – with a drawing tablet and Adobe Photoshop – and traditional methods, by using markers, pencils, and paper. Matthew has illustrated and designed books/magazines for The Australian National Maritime Museum as well as for several Australian publishers. In August 2012 Matt got accepted into the Parramatta Pop-Up Art Program. Since becoming a member of Pop-Up, Matthew has gone on to run many drawing workshops on Anime / Manga, Cartooning, Mythical (imaginary) Creatures and Superheroes. Further information about our guest illustrator can be found at https://www.matthewlin.com.au/.

Matthew introduced himself to students, demonstrated how he designs book covers, did quick sketches, drew facial expressions to show different emotions and got the students to practice drawing with him. They found the presentation enjoyable and engaging and asked the illustrator many questions and got him to sign autographs for them. Students were surveyed after this event to get feedback. They all stated that they enjoyed the presentation and found it interesting and would like us to organise similar types of events in the future. Matthew drew an urban ninja character and presented it to our school as a present to thank us for hosting him to celebrate Book Week 2022.

Students also participated in a fun Book Week Quiz and entered a draw to win lovely prizes. Our Book Week Quiz winners for 2022 are Athry (year 7) – Marco and Phelix (year 8) – Hamza and Mirnes (year 9).

Premier Reading Challenge (PRC) 2022
