Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Carers,

What a lovely K-2 Easter Hat Parade this morning, the students were so excited to show off their creations. We hope you enjoyed viewing the dioramas as well as participating in the Stage 3 egg drop.

We are often asked whether students should wear summer or winter uniform when they return after the break. Please feel comfortable to select the appropriate uniform for the weather at the time. There are usually a couple of weeks transition between summer and winter so students should wear the uniform options that keep then comfortable.

ANZAC Day Assembly

We will be holding a whole school ANZAC Service under the blue sails , weather permitting from 11:30am on Wednesday 6 April. Parents are also welcome to attend to pay their respects. If it is raining we will move the service to the COLA.

Cross Country

On Thursday students will be participating in the Cross Country at NPS. This will be the second year that we host the Cross Country Carnival on the school grounds. We are looking forward to a fun filled morning. The Cross Country will run from 11:30 am. Parents are most welcome to come along and support the students.

To our families celebrating Ramadan, Ramadan Kareem. We wish our Jewish families a Happy Passover and a Happy Easter celebration to all our families celebrating Easter.

I would like to wish our community a lovely break over Easter and I hope you have a chance to relax and recharge. Our staff will be back at school on Monday 24 April for a school development day and students return on Wednesday 26 April.

Warm regards,

Jacqui Gordon

State Youth Leadership Conference

NPS Leadership Team attended the State Youth Leadership Conference on Friday 24th March at the Wesley Conference Centre in the city. We had an amazing time at the Dream and Lead Conference. There were lots of inspiring speakers and they talked about being inspiring leaders and how to build our leadership skills. There were schools from all over NSW. All the different speakers had inspiring stories. Wil Massara, the founder of YLAAUS told his story of how he founded this organisation at the age of 18. Our highlights of the conference were when Brett came on stage to tell us an inspiring story of how he survived and mentally recovered from a shark attack, the shark was 2.5 metres long.  We were involved in activities and we met and talked to school leaders from other schools. We got to sing and dance on the stage and had an wonderful day learning about leadership. We thank Mrs Gordon and Mrs Lawrence for supervising us. Thank you Mr Hills for all your organisation and making sure we got to from the city safely and on time.

Parent Reading Helpers

Can you spare an hour or half an hour one or two after mornings or afternoons a week? Next term we are going to start our Parent Reading Program. This program will help further develop confident and fluent readers across the school and provide students with regular reading practice.

We are asking for parent, carer and grandparent volunteers to come in one or two days a week to read with students across the school. Parent reading will occur Monday to Thursday just outside the students’ classroom. Training will be provided!

Please email the school with your preferred times and days. We will then set up a roster and timetable. The program will start Week 2, Term 2.

Prior to you volunteering for this program, you will need to visit the school office with a photo ID and there is also some documentation to fill out. Volunteers will also need to sign in and out of the school in the office and wear a ‘Visitor Lanyard’.

We are looking forward to welcoming our Parent Readers.

Learning Support at Normanhurst

This year I have taken on a new and exciting role as the Learning and Support Teacher (LaST). This opportunity offers me the chance to work with a variety of students across varying contexts and key learning areas.

The role of the LaST is one which exists to provide timely and direct specialist assistance to students throughout the school. Throughout Term 1, this has included targeted in-class support and small group withdrawal programs aimed at supporting the learning of students. Learning and Support programs take the form of targeted interventions as well as extension and enrichment opportunities. Working collaboratively with classroom teachers, the school’s Learning and Support Team as well as parents and carers ensures the individual needs of students are met.

If you would like any information about this role, please do not hesitate to get in contact.

6. Playwork – Our inclusive Play Project

Following on from the last newsletter…

Playwork is coming to Normanhurst Public School! We are excited to let you know that members of the school community, P&C and staff are working together to bring an enriched and inclusive play experience for every child at Normanhurst PS.

Playwork creates and maintains diverse spaces for children to play so their play can be freely chosen, personally directed and intrinsically motivated.

It has many benefits:

More teaching time. With happier, more creative, and well-exercised children who settle in class faster.

Improved behaviour. On average, there is an 80% decrease in the use of behaviour policies and a 90% drop in senior leadership time spent resolving playtime issues.

Improved happiness and well-being. Meeting the basic human right of play means children and staff report feeling less stressed and more excited about school.

Inclusion makes play better for every child, every day...no exceptions!

Watch this video from a school in the UK that implemented playwork into their playtimes.

We aim to launch playwork playtimes in Term 3 and will update you in the coming weeks. We will need help from you, the wonderful parents of NPS, especially in sourcing items. Keep your eyes peeled!

Complete our survey to tell us how your kids would like us to create enriched and inclusive play experiences.
