Principal's Report

Spring Fair

What an amazing day! I cannot thank Heather Lawson, Meg Garrido and the team of incredible P & C and parent helpers who worked so tirelessly to raise funds for our school. Thank you also to our great community who supported us by bringing in stall items to sell, manning stalls, providing their time and services and, of course, bringing their family and friends on the day. Special thanks to Olivier and Charlie Valente who raised over $1500 at the French crepe stall, as all profits were donated.  Special mentions to Christina and Jan who worked on the canteen tirelessly all day with a band of volunteers, and our eco–rangers who were supported by Mrs Leanne Smith, Miss Emily Young and Mrs Louise Hall. We received so much positive community feedback about our recycling station and our eco-warriors were able to educate everyone and answer their questions.

I was so impressed to see how our community comes together for an event such as the Spring Fair and I know that our Harbord students will benefit from the monies raised. As you can see from the photos, we all had an enjoyable day. On behalf of our staff, thank you.

Congratulations! Harbord are State Champions!

What an amazing achievement from our girls soccer team and coach to be crowned State Champions on Monday. We are so proud of them, especially for their sportsmanship and determination. Please see Mr Addicott’s section in this newsletter for more details.

Teaching & Learning update

Kindergarten orientation

Our 2020 Kindergarten intake will be visiting Harbord on Thursday 7th and Wednesday 13th November from 9:15 to 11am. If you have children, neighbours, friends or relatives who have not yet enrolled, we would love them to do so now so that they do not miss out on the important Orientation Days. We would like to capture all eligible students now so that classes and staffing can be finalised before the end of the school year. We will be hosting a visit on Tuesday 29th October from Harbord Kindy students who will be attending our school next year and yesterday we had children from Albert Hall touring.  Our Intermediate Band will be performing next week at Harbord Kindy, a real highlight in their ‘schoolies week’.

Banner assemblies

Our Semester 2 banners will be presented at school assemblies (10:30am in the school hall) on the following dates:

3-6: Wednesday 27th November

K-2: Wednesday 4th December

Students who have five goldie certificates should bring them to their class teacher who will then send them on to me so they may be added to the banner list. The goldies will then be returned to the student and an invitation will be sent home later in the term. If you aware that your eligible child will not be attending school on the dates listed above, then it is advisable to keep the goldies until next year as your child will then be presented with their banner and receive the full recognition they deserve.

Softball stars

During the last week of term, the State Carnival for Girls Softball was held over three days, luckily at Curl Curl this year, providing our staff, parents and family members easy access to be able to support the Sydney North team, including  Alice and Talea from Harbord, who played in key positions. The team was undefeated across the three long days of play and finished as champions! Mrs Beyleveldt, our school softball coach and I were fortunate that the presentations coincided with our lunch break so we were able to be there for the trophy and medal presentations and the announcement of the State team. Congratulations to Talea who was selected to represent NSW in the Nationals to be held later this term.  Alice and Talea are pictured with their state champion medals and the Sydney North team, with the winners’ trophy.

Senior Girls Soccer

The Senior Girls soccer team has had a very successful and dominant PSSA season. After finishing the season undefeated, the girls easily defeated Curl Curl 3-0 in the semi-final. They then moved onto the grand final against a very strong Beacon Hill Team and were victorious 3-0. Throughout the season, the girls scored 48 goals in total and only conceded 1 goal.

The Senior Girls Soccer team has also been involved in the state wide soccer knockout competition. The girls results are as follows:

Def Avalon 3-0
Def Artamon 1-0
Def Mount Colah 7-0
Def Umina 3-0
Def Avoca Beach 3-0
Def Caves Beach 2-0
Def South Grafton 3-0     (State Semi Final)
Def Shell Cove 2-1             (State Final)

On Monday 21st October the girls traveled Valentine Sports Park to compete in the NSW State Finals for girls soccer. Their semi-final was against South Grafton and they comfortably defeated them 3-0 if very warm conditions. The state final was against Shell Cove Public School. The girls went into half time with a commanding 2-0 lead. The second half was an even contest until late in the game when one of their very skillful NSW representative players kicked an excellent goal. Our girls were under attack for the final few minutes of the game, but they defended well to come out with a 2-1 victory.

With over 500 NSW public school teams participating in this knockout competition, this is a fantastic achievement. I can honestly say that it's been one of the most pleasurable years of coaching I've had and that I'm really proud of how the girls played and competed each week. Each player contributed to the team; they all played well together and we had a lot of fun along the way.

You girls should all be proud of yourselves and I would like to personally thank Lily, Sophie, Lucinda, Maisie, Amelie, Cecilia, Keely, Niamh, Elouise, Cienna, Georgina, Annika, Hannah and Ellie for an extremely enjoyable year.

I would also like to particularly thank the parents who helped with driving all over NSW this year. The girls would not be able to enter knockout competitions like this without your support.

Choir News

Town Hall Choir

Congratulations to our Town Hall Choir students (Year 3 and 4) who performed at the Primary Proms Choral Festival at Sydney Town Hall last term. They sang alongside 400 students from NSW Public Schools - performing a challenging repertoire of 11 songs in unison and two-part harmony. I was very proud of our students who braved the pouring rain and made the most of the opportunity to perform in such a prestigious concert. Well done boys and girls, your efforts this year have been outstanding!

Congratulations to Jemima (Year 4) and Kate (Year 6) who performed beautifully at the same concert as members of the NSW Junior Singers

2020 NSW Junior Singers Auditions

The NSW Public Schools Junior Singers is one of the premier student vocal ensembles in Australia. The ensemble proudly celebrates a long history of high achievement and regularly performs at prestigious venues including the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Town Hall and at the Schools Spectacular.

Students from NSW public schools from Years 4 to 7 (in 2020) are encouraged to audition for a place in Junior Singers. The commitment is for the full school year and rehearsals are held every Tuesday afternoon from 4.30-6.30pm in Lewisham. The fee is $330.

Over the years we have had a number of Harbord students thoroughly enjoy participation in the Junior Singers. The students work with the most esteemed conductors and the improvement in their vocal technique is astounding. I could not recommend the program highly enough!

Applications close Friday 8 November 2019.

The Fair

This year’s Fair was an absolute monster!  THANKYOU to everyone who donated and took part! It was the biggest ever fundraiser held at HPS (final profit TBC but it will be up around $60k!!) A fabulous whole community event – the smiles said it all.

Sponsorship

The P&C team is happy to announce our new GOLD sponsor: Michelle Galletti of Cunninghams Real Estate. Being a mother of two children, Tully in KD and Isla in 2W, Michelle is very much looking forward to supporting Harbord Public.

“I love our school community and I feel so lucky to come on board as Gold Sponsor!” says the Freshwater Specialist Sales Agent.

Michelle has a reputation for being a highly skilled negotiator and has won several industry awards for excellence. She is also an enthusiastic property investor having designed and built her family home in Freshwater. “This firsthand experience enables me to share the best possible advice for selling, buying or renting property in our beautiful locale. Feel free to reach out to me for any advice on property matters.”

Spring Fair-Rubbish Island

We want to say a HUGE thank you to all those who supported our waste management efforts at the Spring Fair this year. With all the fun that the Spring Fair brings, it sadly also brings a huge amount of waste!

The last Spring Fair produced two big skip bins full of mixed waste that went into landfill (yuck!). With everyone’s efforts to reduce the environmental impact of the Spring Fair this year, we estimate that we have redirected almost 9,300 litres of recyclable containers, paper & cardboard and soft plastics from landfill this year - that equates to approximately 39 bins the size of our domestic green waste bins!

A huge Thank You to our year 5 and 6 "Eco Warriors" for their dedication and help on the day. We're thrilled with this effort and look forward to improving the sustainability of the Spring Fair even more next time around!
