Welcome to this week’s newsletter,

Last Friday our Cultural Integrity team welcomed staff and students to a special gathering to celebrate NAIDOC Week 2019.

We were fortunate to have Duncan Smith and his daughter Jakida, from Wiradjuri Echoes, share with us some of the history, culture and achievements of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This year classes have been working on their own Acknowledgement of Country. The student team then worked with Ibu Kennedy, Ms Hale, Miss Corcoran and Mrs Fitzgerald to collaborate, draft and then create our whole school Acknowledgement of Country.

We will continue to build on our knowledge and cultural understanding and look forward to holding more events in our school that will help us develop cultural awareness.

Thank you to Madison B, Dominic M, Hugh A, Edie S, Bill T and Matilda who led the gathering and read their whole school Acknowledgement of Country. This is now on display in the front office area.

The 2019 School Satisfaction Surveys will be conducted later this term

Parents and carers, school staff and students (in years 4 to 6) will be asked to participate in these important surveys. The survey results will contribute to school research and improvement processes.

Although the survey is voluntary, we hope you will want to participate. It won’t take much of your time and will help us improve our school for your child and future students. A letter or email about the parent and carer survey will be sent to you in August. The key ACT results from the 2018 School Satisfaction Surveys have been published on the Education Directorate website (www.education.act.gov.au) and a summary of our school results is provided in our 2018 School Board Report.

Please ensure that your child has a labelled sun safe hat to wear at school

The beginning of August marks the start of the sun protection period for Canberra primary school settings, this is because we begin to witness daily UV levels climb to 3 and above during this month, every day and whilst it may not be all day, it will be for part of the day during recess and lunchtime!

LIBRARY NEWS

Welcome to Term 3

The Library has been a busy place over the past 10 months. We have completed a huge ‘weed’ of outdated resources, finalised two stocktakes, moved the library (books, shelves etc.) to its new location in Patterson Building.

Thanks to everybody (students, caregivers and staff) for helping us achieve such a mammoth task. Thanks also to the School Executive for their support and commitment to this project.

New activities that have been introduced by the Library Team include formal weekly session for Years 5 and 6. These sessions are aimed at developing student’s information and library literacy.

We have introduced an “Author of the Month” program. This will include displays (digital and physical) and author biographies.

The August Author of the Month is Roald Dahl. This will commence in week 3. We will have more about Roald in next week's newsletter.

August is a busy month in the Library. The Chief Minister’s Reading Challenge continues, (see Jane in the library if you would like to join the challenge). Children’s Book Week is in the last week of the month.

Again, thanks to everyone for their continued support and happy reading to you all!

Greg - School, Librarian

Jane - Library Assistant

Book Club

Book Club orders close Sunday night 18th August. Will be processed on Monday the 19th.

There will only be one book club order this term.

Book Week - storybook character dress up day - Monday, 26 August

To culminate this, on Monday 26 August, we invite all students to dress up as a favourite book character for the day and participate in a small class parade at lines. As a school that is mindful of sustainability, we encourage families now to think about how you might design a costume with materials around your home, or through reusable items. Costumes should be inspired by books, characters and the ‘super powers’ related to reading. Please avoid purchasing new costumes that won’t be reused, or dressing up as television characters. Book Week is a chance to emphasise the love of reading and literature, and want all students to come away with ideas of some books to explore.

On Monday 26 August, parents and carers are welcome to attend school from 9.00 to see classes share costumes with the junior or senior school at lines.

LOST PROPERTY

The lovely lost property ladies have done an amazing job sorting. They voluntarily spend between 1-2 hours fortnightly sorting through items.

There is currently a large amount of unnamed items in lost property.

Please check if you have any missing items as soon as possible.  All unnamed items left in lost property will be thoughtfully disposed of at the end of week 3, Friday 9 August.

Any named items have been left in white bins outside each year's classrooms. Could you please ask your child to check.

Please label clearly in capital letters your child’s clothing including the initial of their first name and full surname.

BAND NEWS

Year 6 Band - Combined rehearsal and concert

On Friday, 9 August (Week 3), we will be hosting Hughes Primary School's Year 6 band for a combined rehearsal.

Everyone is welcome to join us for a concert at 12pm in Patterson Hall.
