Term 3 Week 3

Message from the Principal

It's been wonderful to see more of the sunshine lately!! Our back field might finally be able to fully dry out.

It was lovely to be able to invite parents to join us for National Tree Planting Day, I know the students had a really great time and look forward to watching the plants grow. Thank you to the P&C for coordinating this event and extra big thanks to those parents who assisted on the day. Your help was well appreciated.

I also had the absolute pleasure of celebrating 100 days of Kindergarten, it really was a great day thanks to Ms Brsakovski and Ms Sobiesiak. Our celebrations will continue into the coming weeks as we congratulate the students who competed at the District Athletics Carnival (final results and ribbons are currently being collated). We will also induct the Sememster 2 SRC representatives and award two Aussie of the Month Awards (June and July). Our next assembly has been moved from Friday next week to Friday 19 August at 2pm so that we may celebrate these wonderful achievements as part of our Education Week festivities and invite parents to join us. We will still have some COVID safe protocols in place (including mask wearing) to help keep us all safe and well.

This week is Education Week, an annual celebration of NSW Public Education and the achievements of our school, students and staff. We made the decision to delay Education Week so that we can comfortably invite you all to join with us and participate in the celebrations. It has been such a long time since we have been able to open our school to everyone and we are looking forward to it.

I am very happy to announce that we can finally host our P&C meetings at school. Our next meeting is 7pm Tuesday 9 August in the library- it will be amazing if you are able to join us.

District Athletics Carnival

Approximately 40 students from ToPS attended the North Wollongong District athletics carnival last Thursday and Friday. While none of our students progressed to the regional carnival, we did have a number of students who placed in the top 10 and all of our students tried their absolute best. Thank you to Mr Langford, Miss Kensey and the parents who came along to support our students.

100 Days of Kindergarten

Kindergarten celebrated their 100th day of school on Tuesday 2nd August. It is a big event in the school year for our kindergarten students who have spent the last 100 days growing and expanding their minds all while adjusting to big school. The students miraculously transformed into old men and women over night and spent the day completing fun activities around the number 100, making biscuits and crowns, and ending the day with a picnic. Congratulations on the last 100 days of learning kindergarten, you make all the teachers and staff at Towradgi so proud.

Year 1 Phonics Screening Check

Information for parents and carers

What is phonics?

Phonics is the relationship between letters and sounds and is vital in learning to read. Some children struggle with learning to read so it is important that these children are identified quickly so teachers can plan for any specific support they may need.

What is the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check?

The Year 1 Phonics Screening Check is a short, quick assessment that tells teachers how your child is progressing in phonics. Your child will sit with the class teacher and will be asked to read 40 words aloud. These words include 20 real words and 20 nonsense words. The test normally takes a few minutes. If your child is struggling the teacher will stop the check. The check is carefully designed not to be stressful for your child.

Why use nonsense words?

The assessment includes pseudo or nonsense words to see if the student is able to use their knowledge of blending to read a word rather than their memory of having seen that word before.

More information

If you have any further questions, please talk to your child’s class teacher.

P & C Message

NATIONAL TREE DAY PLANTING:

Thanks to our volunteers who came along to plant trees last Friday on National Tree day.

Without the funding grant from the Teachers Federation, assistance from Green Connect (a local social enterprise, check them out here) and support of our volunteers, teachers and students it wouldn't have been possible.  Now we have the opportunity to watch these natives grow and thrive. We have had difficulty sourcing a donation of woodchip for mulch around the plants.  Please get in contact with us if you have a lead.

PIE DRIVE FUNDRAISER:

You will have received a pie drive order form for our fundraiser this week. If not please let us know.Last year the pies were so good that we did a second drive where people ordered more.  They are baked fresh for our drive at a local bakery and freeze very well.  So get your family, friends and neighbours ordering so we can raise necessary funds to replace the AV equipment in the hall.Orders close Tuesday 9th August; collection is Friday 12th August from the school.Orders can be put through on our fundraising site (click this link or scan the barcode below): https://topsfundraising.square.site/Or dropped into the office with cash.

UNIFORM SHOP:

Second hand uniform shop will be open during the Education week celebrations.  Keep your eyes peeled for more details (we prefer card payments, but will accept cash)
