The nature of learning

Term 1 Week 10

Principals Report

Welcome to our first eNewsletter. It has been amazing how we are able to respond flexibly to keep our community informed.

Throughout these uncertain times it is easy to be overwhelmed by the changes that are happening around us. It is a time of uncertainty, confusion and worry as life as we know it is reshaped out of our control. We would like to thank our school community for the way in which you have supported the school through these changes. As you know, term two provides you with the option to send your child to school or keep them at home and participate in a combination of online and hardcopy work. The Department has also released their website Our Learning SA to support teachers and parents during this time. Please also ensure you have downloaded and allowed notifications from the Skoolbag app. This is our official communication platform.

This is very new territory for many of our teachers. It is the same for our teachers as it is for our community. We have some staff who have never engaged in online learning and others who have more experience. We ask that you continue to work with us through the development and implementation of a whole new range of blended learning for our students both at school and at home. As we finalise the platforms for the blended learning information will be sent home to families via Skoolbag updates.

It is in times like this that acts of kindness and gratitude shine brightly. I would like to thank the community members who have sent in messages to our staff and let you know that these are truly appreciated and have lifted spirits across the school. We have seen these lovely acts between our staff also. One of the most amazing things was Ms Daly's class in Rm 4 recognising that our elderly residents living in the Estia Retirement Village (Cnr Waterloo and Bolivar Rd) have had restricted visits to ensure the health. The students created some beautiful flowers and wrote notes to the residents. The response was incredible. We received a call from the Estia staff who described the most incredible moment when residents were presented with the package. There were tears and smiles all round! Many residents have asked if they can keep writing to our students as pen pals. Check out the lovely flowers and notes our Rm 4 students sent below.

Swimming Week 17th - 21st March

NOCHE VIEJA

Last week in Spanish lessons most classes learnt about Noche Vieja or New Years Eve. It is a tradition where the people of Spain eat twelve grapes with each clock bell strike to welcome the New Year. They make a wish for each grape. If they successfully eat 12 grapes by the 12th strike of the clock bell, the people of Spain believe their 12 wishes will come true and they will have good luck for the following 12 months.  The tradition started when the King of Spain back in 1909 gifted grapes to all the families as there was an excess of grapes from a great harvest that year.

Students got to think of 12 wishes for their New Year, record them down and then participated in eating 12 grapes while they listened out for the clock bell strikes, like they would do if they were in Spain on New Years Eve. Students had great fun participating in this Spanish tradition.

LOV Easter Party

Every year Ladies of Variety (LOV) facilitate an amazing Easter Party. Unfortunately this year it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 restrictions. That didn't stop LOV from supporting our children in Rm's 22 and 32. The graciously donated some funds to cover the cost of party food and a lovely parcel of Easter Eggs for our students. The two classes put on a great day for students with Egg and Spoon race, Easter Egg hunt and other party games. They enjoyed pizza and chips and the enjoyed their chocolate treats. A big thanks to the staff who helped make the day a wonderful experience.

Craft Group

The Salisbury Lutheran Church is facilitating a regular 'get together' open to all parents of the school community.

Some of us bring our crafts, knitting, needlework, colouring books, mending or sometimes we just sit and chat over a cuppa.  Perhaps you need some help filling out forms or are looking to meet some new people, or maybe you have always wanted to learn to knit or crochet?   We are there to encourage and support each other.

You will find us in the Community Space at the Children's Centre  between 12 noon and 3pm. on Wednesdays . Our space is child friendly if have young children and someone is always ready to cuddle a baby.   Bring your lunch if you wish, the jug is always on the boil!

Sessions are currently postponed.

Athletics centre at Bridgestone reserve to be delayed

Due to the current restrictions resulting from the COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak, the completion of South Australia’s newest athletics centre at Bridgestone Reserve will be delayed.   You may still see some progress during the coming months as some of our contractors have been impacted more than others. BluBuilt Construction Pty Ltd will still be able to continue with the building, however Polytan Pty Ltd are unable to pour the synthetic track due to the state border closures. As the synthetic surface must be poured during optimal weather conditions - in the warmer months, this will most likely now occur later in the year or early next year.   While we are disappointed with this inevitable delay, we are pleased that significant progress has been made to date, including completion of the base, erection of lighting towers, grassed infield, irrigation works, drainage and perimeter fencing. The image below shows the progress to date.   We look forward to the completion and opening of the athletics centre in due course.
