St Mary's Newsletter

Term 1 - Week 8 (24 March 2022)

Dear St Mary's School Community

Values in Focus: Sportsmanship

We play fairly for the enjoyment of all and encourage each other to do our best.

Gospel: Luke 15: 1-3, 11-32

In Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus tells the Parable of the Prodigal Son.  This is a story about two vices – the younger son greedily uses his inheritance while the older son rejects his brother out of envy.  We are called to respond to greed with generosity and envy with love by serving ourselves last, think of someone of whom you are jealous and asking God to bless them even more and praising God for all the blessings in your life.

Feast of the Annunciation

Tomorrow (25th March) is the Feast of the Annunciation – this marks the visit of the angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary, during which he told her that she would be the mother of Jesus, the Son of God.

PD Day

A reminder that tomorrow is a Pupil Free Day for St Mary’s School.  Enjoy the long weekend with your children and we look forward to seeing them on Monday.

Assembly

The Year Six students are busy preparing for their assembly.  A reminder that this will be posted on the St Mary’s School Facebook page and parents of certificate recipients will have a photo emailed home (these will be presented in classrooms).

Holy Week Liturgy

The St Mary’s School Holy Week Liturgy will take place on Friday, 8 April at 8.50am.  All classes will be leading part of the Easter Story.  The liturgy will occur virtually – all parents will be sent a link from the office to join the liturgy if they wish.  This will be a TEAMS invitation and we ask all parents who are joining us to ensure that their camera and microphone are OFF.  I know that the students and staff would appreciate a virtual clap or comment at the end of the Liturgy!

Schools Tennis Classic

Good Luck to the Charlie G, Archie, Greta, Ellie and Will who will be participating in the Country Final of the Sun Smart School Tennis Classic tomorrow  in Perth!

Welcome

We welcome the following families to St Mary's School who all started in the last week - the Loo Family:  Rhonda (Year 3) and Anthony (Kindy), the Sanoop Scariah family (Elouise - Pre-Kindy) and the Matanga Family (Tania - Year One).  We hope that you all enjoy being part of our wonderful community.

We also welcome Tamsyn Crombie to Year Six.  Tamsyn is studying Education at Edith Cowan and is doing her initial placement at St Mary's School.  Tamsyn will be at school for seven consecutive Thursdays (beginning today) and all going well, will return in November for a two-week block.

Accommodation Required

St Mary's School will be hosting a Teaching Practice Student in Term Three.  Daniel will be completing his final practicum at St Mary's.  Daniel is not a local and  so during that time will require accommodation.  Rentals in Merredin are either not suitable or costly.  I am hoping that we may be able to find him (independent) accommodation within our community - such as a granny flat or workers cottage/donger for him to rent.  If you have something that might be suitable or know someone who has - can you please contact me either via email at adriana.coniglio@cewa.edu.au or through the office on 90411907.

God Bless and have a lovely weekend with your families.

Holy Week Liturgy

On Friday, 8 April, we will be having a whole school Holy Week Remembrance. We will be reflecting on Palm Sunday, The Last Supper, Garden of Gethsemane, Good Friday and Easter Sunday - the events leading up to Jesus' death and resurrection.

This year, it will look a little different - each class will be participating in their own classrooms to present an aspect of Holy Week. This will be performed together via teams. All parents are welcome to join us, virtually. If you require a teams invite to the event, please email zoe.omalley@cewa.edu.au by Thursday, 7 April.

Music

Welcome back to Music for 2022, it’s been great having you all back in the Performing Arts room again. Here is a quick run-down on what’s been happening!

Pre-primary

We have sung lots of songs and done lots of moving to the beat using all sorts of shaking, stamping, twisting and hopping. We have really enjoyed doing a few folk dances.

We got to have a go at using the instruments such as chime bars, shakers, tapping sticks, tambourines, bells and drums.

Year One

This term we have been learning to keep the beat and clapping, playing and singing along to our rhythm patterns. We have learnt some silly songs to teach us these rhythm patterns and we have enjoyed singing them and adding our own parts.

Year Two

This term  have been learning about short and long sounds. This has led us to learning some new rhythms and we have been playing, singing and moving along to them.

Next we are learning about call and response songs as well as playing Ostinato(short repeated rhythms) on the xylophone.

Year Three/Four

We have been lucky enough to start learning the recorder this term. We have been learning the G A B notes and a couple of little songs to help us remember the notes but also note reading. We are going to pause our recorder playing for now, and re-look at the COVID situation next term. Just to keep everyone safe!

We have also been listening to the ‘Carnival of the animals’ and seeing if we can guess what animal each piece of music is about.  This helps us with learning about all the parts of music and how they can change the feel or mood of music.

 Year Four / Five

We have been lucky enough to start learning the recorder this term. We have been learning the G A B notes and a couple of little songs to help us remember the notes but also note reading. We are going to pause our recorder playing for now, and re-look at the COVID situation next term. Just to keep everyone safe!

We have been listening to lots of different types of music and learning how different types of music can create mood and emotion.

Year Six

This term we have started off with Kaboom music! This is a program that requires us to perform different rhythms on chairs. We did a great job learning, rehearsing and working as a group.  We are now learning about rap/ hip hop music. We are looking at all parts of rap, including the lyrics, rhythms and this week will be having a go at playing looped chords on the xylophones.
