Principal's Reflection

Saluti Amici!

Dear Families,

As we delve into the midst of the term, I am finding the need to dig deep. As Brene Brown suggests this may be a time for me to “DIG Deep = "get deliberate, inspired, & going.” Brene describes this as being

Deliberate in our thoughts and behaviours through prayer, meditation, or simply by setting intentions;

Inspired to make new and different choices;

Going. We take action.”

As we celebrate the feast of Mary MacKillop, I reflect on how she did this over and over in her ministry. We are so blessed to be reaping the rewards in education from her efforts, and the team of Sisters of St Joseph’s of the Sacred Heart she worked with, inspired by the love of God. As staff and students battle sickness across the Year levels, I ask you to be kind to yourselves, help each other and go gently and be inspired by St Mary MacKillop of the Southern Cross.

I would like to acknowledge the marvellous camp planned and executed last week at Kangaroobie. It was awesome for adults and children! We hiked, laughed, crawled through obstacle courses and created lasting memories in the first St Joseph's school camp! The students represented our school and your families with respect, courage, kindness and responsibility. I was a very  proud principal!

Thank you Louise, Susan, Mike, Nicholas and Hayley for your commitment to the children. We had a blast!

The MACSSIS survey will be conducted very soon. Please read the information below regarding this. I hope we have many families participate in this survey, because your voice ensures St Joseph's reflects on the things we are doing well and improve in the areas that will enhance our learning, teaching and leadership. Your voice matters!

We invite our Father's and Special Friends to the liturgy to be held on Friday 2nd September at 8.45 am. This will be held in Family Groups in your child's Family Group Teacher's Room. This may be different to the Year level classroom that your child belongs to. Invitations will be sent later this week for families to RSVP.

Addio amici!

Kind regards

Shelley

MACSSIS Family School Improvement Survey

In 2022, our school is participating in Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools – School Improvement Surveys (MACSSIS). MACSSIS is an annual process whereby schools listen to the thoughts and feelings students, families and staff have about how their school can improve. These surveys help inform the ongoing improvement of schools across the Archdiocese of Melbourne.

One of the main goals of the family survey is to identify the strengths and areas for improvement in our school. MACSSIS data benefits everyone within our school and provides valuable community insights on areas that each school can focus on. St Joseph’s believes it is important to encourage families to have a voice and contribute to shaping the ongoing improvement of the school.

The feedback you provide assists our school to continue to improve because we value your voice.

The survey is available online, can be accessed from Monday 29 August and needs to be completed by Friday 16 September 2022. This survey may only be completed once. We have a prize draw for two Pacific Werribee $50 vouchers for families who complete the survey.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION: Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) Donations

This term in Religious Education, children in Year 1/2 have been looking at the big question ‘How Are We Transformed?’ They have been learning to understand the Sacrament of Reconciliation by learning the importance of forgiveness in their lives, other people’s lives and in scripture stories about Jesus. We would love to spend the rest of Term 3 reflecting on how our actions can impact the lives of Indigenous children living in remote communities across Australia.

We are raising funds to support the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) to provide books and learning resources to Indigenous children because reading opens doors - that is, doors to future opportunities and choices!

Here is a YouTube video that shares the wonderful things the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) will do with your generous donations:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCz6YZhOr4E

To show your support, we are encouraging all children on Friday the 26th of August, ‘Book Week Dress Up Day’ to donate a Gold Coin. There will also be donation tins around the school if children would like to donate throughout the week!

You can also show your support by making an online donation via our school fundraising link: https://fundraising.ilf.org.au/stjosephsbookweekfundraiser

BOOK WEEK 2022

During the week of the 22nd-26th of August, students will be enjoying reading the Children's Book Week shortlisted books for the year and doing activities in their levels.

On Friday 26th August students are asked to think about a book they enjoy and choose a character to dress up as for the day. We will be having a parade at 2:30pm.  If the weather is all clear, we invite you to join us to see the parade. You will be able to take your child at the end of the parade, just be sure to let the classroom teacher/s know.

If the weather is not permitting then we will be sure to share pictures on the newsletter and via SeeSaw.

We look forward to celebrating Book Week together!

PREMIER'S READING CHALLENGE

The challenge will be finishing in September so please make sure all of your books have been entered into the portal.

NCCD Information for Parents, Carers & Guardians

In August of each year, NCCD information is collected by all schools to count the number of students who may need adjustments or help with their learning due to a disability. Bullying - the true definition explained and clarified.

What is Bullying?

Bullying is never ok. It’s hurtful and can impact someone for a long time.

Talk about what bullying is before it happens so your child can recognise it and know what to do.

Bullying is more than just a fight or disliking someone.  It’s being mean to someone over and over again.

Bullying is an ongoing or repeated misuse of power in relationships, with the intention to cause deliberate psychological harm.

Bullying behaviours can be verbal, physical or social.

Bullying can happen anywhere – at home, online, with friends, in a group, on the bus or at school.

First, make sure you have a clear idea yourself by checking out the formal definition of bullying to understand bullying. You can also find ways to describe bullying that are suitable for children of various ages.

Point out that bullying is not just when someone is mean to you once, but it happens over and over and makes you feel like you can't stop it. If you want, you could use some of these questions:

  • What do you think bullying is?

  • Have you seen bullying happening? What did you do? How did you feel?

  • Why do you think some people bully other kids?

  • Who are the adults you would talk to when it comes to things like bullying?

  • Have you ever felt scared to go to school because you were afraid of someone bullying you?

  • Has someone tried to bully you? What ways have you tried to change it?

  • What do you think parents can do to help stop bullying?

  • Have you or your friends left other kids out on purpose? Do you think that was bullying? Why or why not?

  • Have you ever tried to help someone who is being bullied? What happened? What would you do if it happens again?

Tell your child that bullying can happen to anyone but it is never okay. Talk about how to respond to bullying safely. Make sure they know what to do if it happens to them or they see it happening to someone else.

Most importantly, let your child know how to get help if bullying happens.

Encourage them to speak to an adult if it happens, and to keep on asking for help if the bullying doesn't stop.

Talk with your child about how they might handle other challenging social situations as well.

You have an important role to help children and young people learn how to manage their own feelings and to work out how to argue or disagree with other people in appropriate ways. Everyday activities and issues can be valuable learning opportunities.

Words to avoid

Avoid describing a child as a 'bully' or a 'victim'. Although these words are often used in research and in the media, they are not very helpful for finding positive and lasting solutions.

When you talk about bullying, focus on more appropriate ways to act with others and positive ways to get on with other people.

Children can change the way they behave with support from parents and teachers. If the labels of 'bully' or 'victim' stick, it can make it harder for them to change. Using these words can suggest that bullying and being bullied are due to unchangeable things about the children involved.

The labels of 'bully' or 'victim' can also cause further harm if a child accepts them as part of their social identity.

Keep communication open

Children and young people will ask for advice and help with problems if they think parents and caregivers are interested in them and their concerns.

When parents and carers spend some time each day asking about what happened during the day, and show genuine interest in their feelings and experiences, children will know that they can talk to their parents if they have a problem.

Check in with your child often. Listen to them. Know their friends, ask about school, and understand their concerns. Ask them about issues they tell you about, but don't jump in to solve their problems. Ask them what they think they can do about it.

Be alert too that children sometimes 'shut down' and become reluctant to talk if they are experiencing bullying and don't know what to do. Be alert to the signs of bullying. Sensitive and caring conversations about what is happening for your child can make a difference.

YEAR 5/6 STUDENT VOICE

YEAR 5/6 CAMP PICS

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

Recently the Foundation students celebrated 100 days of school. To mark the occasion, they designed their own seed packets and counted out 100 seeds to plant in the garden.

Junior classes have been learning about the Kulin nation seasons. The longest season of the year (Waring - wombat season) has come to an end and we have entered the month-long season of Guling (orchid season). Guling heralds the approach of Spring. You may have noticed wattle blossoming, common brown moths laying their eggs and native orchids are blooming.

Our Year 3-6 students have been looking at the Wyndham City Council’s “Habitat Heroes”. They have been researching fauna native to our area and the habitats that are conducive to enticing certain species to our gardens. Students have been designing garden spaces that incorporate native plants and elements needed for specific fauna to survive. I am always excited to learn new things with the children. If you’d like to find out more check out the “Habitat Heroes” book on the Wyndham Council website.

KITCHEN GARDEN

We have lots of different types of leafy greens in the kitchen garden and we are starting to see signs that Spring is coming soon.

The Foundation and Year 1/2 students have made some beautiful “fallen leaf” art that (in my opinion) is worthy of hanging in the NGV!

In the Year 3-6 classes we have begun to create mud maps of the future orchard area of the kitchen garden. I am always amazed by the ideas that come together when children contribute to the design of the spaces they learn in. The students have been researching different types of fruit trees and we have started to learn about “companion planting”. Did you know that there are over 7,000 varieties of apple trees in the world!

Parent Engagement: Mathematics

We wanted to share with families some reading on how Parent Engagement in Learning  and Supporting numeracy at home can make a huge impact on your child's learning journey. Please take some time to read these articles from Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools.
