St Pat's News

October 16, 2019

At St Patrick’s Parish Primary School we hold the care, safety and wellbeing of children and young people as a central and fundamental responsibility of our school.

From The RE Leader - Peter Sanderson

As we continue through World Mission Month, we accept the invitation from Catholic Mission to participate in Socktober in the spirit of the movement’s guiding principles: Compassion, Respect, Love, Enlightenment, Balance and Joy. Together we pray:

O God, you sent your Son into the world as the true light.

Pour out the Spirit he promised that we may light the world with justice,  joy, and hope.

We ask this through our Lord, Jesus Christ, your Son,

Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Mission Activities

Mission Activities - Help us to “Sock It To Poverty”

As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, Catholic Mission have asked us to support their work in Ghana. They have identified the month of October as “Socktober”, building on the Pope’s recent initiative: “Sport at the Service of Humanity”. Our Mini Vinnies group will be running a Mission Day on Tuesday 22nd October. On this day we are asking that each student bring a gold coin donation to go towards the work of Catholic Mission. They are also invited to wear their favourite sports top from whatever code they wish - soccer, AFL, NRL. It doesn’t matter which. Each class will be invited to participate in some soccer activities in which they will be using “sockballs” made from recycled materials, similar to what the children in Ghana would use. You can read about the work of Catholic Mission via this link.

Families are most welcome to make a donation to Catholic Mission on top of the gold coin on Mission Day by placing your donation in an envelope marked Catholic Mission and leaving it at the school office.

Here is an example of what our donations can achieve:

$60 can cover the cost of vital medicines and check-ups for five children at the Nazareth Home for God’s Children for one week.

$150 can support the cost of constructing a chapel for a Catholic school in Ghana, giving the students and staff a place to worship.

$450 can cover the cost of providing nutritious food for five children at Nazareth Home for God’s Children for six weeks.

Dear Parents, Parishioners, Carers, Staff & Students,

Spring Fair

A sincere thank you to everyone who assisted in any way with our Spring Fair last Sunday. We were blessed with perfect weather which helped the atmosphere enormously.

Particular thanks to Renee Killen, Lucy Lehne, Georgina Dumesny and Wendy Kelly who, as part of the Parents & Friends group, took overall responsibility for this year’s Spring Fair and spent countless hours ensuring everything was prepared and ready.

Thank you also to:

  • Angela Williams who coordinated the music throughout the day.

  • The convenors of each stall who ensured everything was organised and ready to go on their particular stalls.

  • The parents and staff who took their turns manning the stalls. All families have children to organise and supervise but still commit to their assigned shifts. Your time and effort is very much appreciated.

  • Janine Moloney for her work in the preparation and organisation of the administrative tasks.

  • The many businesses and individuals, both local and further afield, as well as school families, that contributed to our raffles and prizes. There were some very happy prize winners!

  • Parents who assisted with the set up and pack up.

Takings at this stage are on a par than last year, so that’s an excellent outcome.

Working Bee

Thank you to everyone who was able to assist with the working bee on Saturday. Having so many willing helpers to assist with the fair set up and ensuring the grounds looked their best made it easier to accomplish the many jobs.

There are some gardening implements that were missing after the working bee including garden shears (with wooden handles), secateurs, a trowel and a weed puller. These are personal items, not school equipment, so everyone at the working bee is asked to check the equipment they took home and please return these items to the school if found.

No Parking at the School Crossing

In an effort to improve child safety in and around the school crossing, the Moyne Shire has erected a number of "No Standing" signs near the crossing, which means no parking is permitted in the area between the signs. Please be mindful of this when dropping off and picking up your children so that you are not fined.

The office is open from 8.30am - 4.00pm each day.

There is no supervision for students before 8.40am. Teachers use the time prior to the doors opening for setting up for the day, therefore they are not available to supervise students. Students who arrive at school prior to 8.40am need to wait at the side door near the hall until the doors are opened.

The bell for the start of the day rings at 8.55am, any student arriving after this time needs to be signed in using the iPad at the office.

The bell for the end of the day rings at 3.20pm. If for any reason you are going to be later than 3.30pm to collect your child/children, please contact the school office.

Fun with Fractions

Lena & Isla

In 3/4 we have been learning about fractions. We have learnt that there are three types of fractions.

  1. Proper Fractions - the numerator is smaller than the denominator (for example 1/5 is a proper fraction)
  2. Improper Fractions - the numerator is greater than the denominator (for example 6/2 is an improper fraction)
  3. Mixed Fractions - a whole number and a proper fraction together (for example 2½ is a mixed fraction).

William

I have learnt how to add mixed fractions together. For example 3 ⅔ + 2 4/12 = 6

Meghan

I have learnt about equivalent fractions. For example, 4/4 equals one whole or ½ is the same as 2/4.
