Issue 3 – 8 March 2019

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

As we pass the half way mark of term one it is nice to reflect on the amazing things that have been undertaken so far this year and start to think about some of the exciting things that lie ahead.

Looking back over the first month of school, 40 Kindergarten students have begun their educational journey with us here at Scarborough Primary School, with their laughter and smiles far outweighing the minimal trepidation and tears. At the other end of the school, our Year 5/6 students have all become part of Leadership Teams, selecting to be either a House Captain, a Sports Captain or a member of the Sustainability or Health and Well Being committees. They also participated in a Leadership Day at HBF Stadium where they listened to some inspirational guest speakers and engaged in activities to develop their leadership skills.

Community wise, we have had a very successful AGM with the P&C and are in the process of finalising the filling of vacant positions on the School Board. This will be completed within the next week, in time for the first board meeting for the year which is scheduled for March 20. Look out for details of our new board members in the next newsletter. We have also had a number of students engaging in Friday morning surf lessons, despite some rather chilly conditions on occasion!

Moving forward, our Year 5/6 students are off to Bickley next week for their school camp where they will spend 3 days experiencing some exciting team building activities. This will be followed by Harmony Week in Week 7. Mrs Salt has been busy coordinating a range of activities for students and parents to participate in during this week. More information on Harmony Week can be found further on in this newsletter. Finally, Term 1 will conclude with three way conferences with classroom teachers in Weeks 9 and 10. This will be a lovely opportunity to end the term by hearing about the successes that your children have had so far this year. More information around booking times will be coming from class teachers over the next few weeks.

Harmony Week 2019

The theme for this year's Harmony Week is Everyone Belongs. We will be having several activities happening throughout the week (18-22 March)  to celebrate the wonderfully diverse Scarborough Primary School community. Several of these activities are open to parent participation:

Monday 18

Before School Fitness: this will be a whole-school game, organised by Will and the Wellbeing Council. Please feel free to join in the fun!

Tuesday 19

Communication Workshop (see below for details and link to book in) presented by Fiona Perella from Strength Heroes. Highly recommended. All children of parents in the session will be collected from class at 3.00pm and supervised until the end of the session.

Wednesday 20

Family Culture Experience: we need your help with this one. We are looking for family members of our students to come in and share a little of their language and culture with their child's class - just half an hour in the afternoon. Please contact Erica Salt on erica.salt@education.wa.edu.au, if you are able to assist.

Friday 22

Harmony Week Assembly: run by our Wellbeing Council. This will be at the usual time of 8.50am.

Long Table Brunch: we are asking families to bring in a dish that can be easily shared, that represents their culture. All dishes are to be labelled with ingredients (see note coming home next week) and brought to the tables outside the undercover area at the start of the school day. Students and families will have the opportunity to sample these dishes after the assembly.

Parent Workshop: Clearer Communication

Have you ever been guilty of avoiding difficult conversations, holding back saying what’s on your mind, reacting instead of responding or indulging in gossip?  Well, you are not alone.  These are some of the most common mistakes of communication and they can cause frustration, confusion and anger.

Join us as we explore these mistakes, the cost to our relationships and give you tips, tricks and hacks on how to improve your communication so your message gets through.  Whilst our focus is on developing better relationships and communication between parents and school, our participants have said they can apply our techniques to develop better communication in a variety of different relationships.

What participants have said

“It opened my eyes to things I do, that may be blocking good communication”

“Thanks, good tips that I can apply professionally and at home too!”

Come along from 2.30pm – 3.30pm to the school library on Tuesday 19 March. Your primary school aged children will be collected and supervised after the siren.  Entry is free, bookings recommended.  Bring a friend and go in the draw to win a door prize.

Uniform Shop

Hi everyone,

Just a reminder that the uniform shop has resumed its usual hours of trade in the library on Wednesday mornings between 8:30am and 9:00am.

Orders can now be placed through the online system QuickCliq and will be delivered on the first Wednesday after you place your order.

Now that the cooler weather is approaching it's the perfect time to order jumpers and track pants. Payments can be made through QuickCliq, by direct funds transfer or cash.

We have new contact details for the uniform shop - please contact Trish at scarboroughprimarypcuniform@gmail.com I will check the inbox every couple of days and at least before the shop opens on Wednesday mornings.

As some of you may be aware it is likely that I will no longer have children attending Scarborough Primary next year, so I am seeking someone - or a few people - to take on the role of Uniform Shop Coordinator. Please speak with me, come and check out the shop on Wednesday mornings or email me if you are interested in discussing this rewarding volunteer role.

Hope to see you all at the shop.
