2022 Term 4 Issue 10

From the Principal

Dear families & friends,

Term 4 has begun with a bang and is hurrying along as always. Each group are well into our term’s Inquiry ‘People Place and culture are expressed through the arts’.  We started this unit with a whole school excursion to the Art Gallery and Museum to investigate how different perspectives are communicated through artworks. This term has a strong focus on critically thinking about and analysing artworks.

Resource Hub

Most of you have probably heard that over the holidays we had another incident of serious water damage in the Resource Hub with a roof leak during the heavy storms. This resulted in the loss of many, many picture books and carpet replacement again! The leak in the roof has been investigated and we have been told resolved. The carpet has been replaced and was completed over the weekend.

We have been very fortunate to have been able to negotiate and work with Dillon’s bookstore at Norwood who are working with Gillian on replacing our books and have very generously given us a 20% discount. As these books arrive over the next few weeks we will be looking for a team of volunteer book coverers! We will be offering morning tea style volunteering sessions for people to join in or if you would prefer to take home we will have boxes set up as we have done previously for people to take home. As books are ready we will be sending out call outs for help so keep your eyes out!

I would like to thank all the staff and particularly Di, Gillian and Miel who have put in many hours sorting, cleaning and organising everything that needed to be done while Kelly is away. We welcome Kelly back from her travels next week.

Unfortunately the loss of the hub area this term has also affected our performing arts plans for the term but teachers have been able to arrange alternate ways of working to ensure we can continue to provide a quality arts program.

Congratulations Volleyballers

A group of 16 primary students competed in the schools Beach Volleyball competition yesterday. I want to congratulate them on the feedback we received from other schools about our students’ team spirit, joy and support of each other. We know we are great, but it always nice to hear it from someone else!

School name change

The name change process is now in action. Signage is being arranged and is planned to happen over the holiday break. We officially become Felixstow Primary School as of 1st January 2023. We will send out an order form for any uniform items people would like to arrange and will be selling our current stock at a reduced price later this term. You do not have to replace current items you own unless you wish to. Any new items will have our new name on them.

Lauren farewell

On Friday we said farewell to Lauren, who is due to have her baby in just two weeks! We are very excited to meet our new little Felixstow member and wish Lauren all the best in these next few months as she enjoys becoming a mum for the first time. We will be making sure Lauren keeps in touch and that we can share the exciting news with you as soon as we know!

Term 4 is always a very busy one so please keep an eye out for notices, reminders and events so that you don’t miss anything! We are looking forward to a fun few weeks ahead of camp, swimming, aquatics, transitions, excursions, end of year celebrations and graduations!

Cheers Skye 😊

Term 4 Inquiry

Excursion to the Art Gallery and Museum

To help us further explore our inquiry topic this term, we had a whole school excursion to the Art Gallery and Museum where we observed artworks and artifacts from First Nations people.

By seeing these pieces up close and in person, students were able to form questions about who, why, what, where and how. The conversations sparked by the excursion are helping to guide further learning in class.

The Juniors had a wonderful time at the Museum and Art Gallery learning how First Nations people represent their culture through artefacts and art works. We went on a scavenger hunt in the Museum and looked for special paintings and sculptures in the Art Gallery.

Art

This term the juniors have been working with an Artist in Residence, Uncle Cedric Varcoe. Uncle Cedric, a Ngarrindjeri artist and storyteller from Port Elliot, has been captivating students by sharing creation stories and interesting information about Ngarrindjeri culture. He has been guiding students to create artworks that use symbols to tell their own stories about their connection to place.

Beach Volleyball 🏐

During Week 3, the primary students (years 4 - 6) had the option of participating in a beach volleyball carnival down at Glenelg. Thankfully the weather held off and what a fantastic time they had!

All year the students have had the chance to practice their volleyball skills at break time and during P.E. lessons with Kamal, this was a great opportunity for them to get out and play on the beach.

Vacation Care Update

Thank you to our governing council members and very patient families who have supported us through the journey to get Vacation Care up and running. We can gladly report that our first Vacation Care ran successfully and was a lot of fun. As well as our fun in-house activities we were lucky enough to have an incursion with Marty Mc Bubble and an excursion to Mega Courts!

Jaxon (Primary): "Vacation care was fun because it was in school holidays and I finally got to spend more time in OSHC. Send your kids here it is fun. The circus day was my favourite activity, we did acrobatics and stuff".

Staff Update

Our lovely Lauren is officially on maternity leave!!

Lauren is a wonderful part of our Felixstow family and we will no doubt miss her dearly BUT we are so excited for her, her husband Thomas and their very loved dog Zeppelin to start a family of their own.

We wish Lauren the absolute best of luck starting her new journey of motherhood and we know she will be nothing but amazing ♡

Student Teacher's

This term we welcome Emily and Michael, they are second year Education students from the University of South Australia and will be spending time in Laura's class for the first four weeks. Emily and Michael will be observing, supporting and teaching in the Primary classrooms.

My name is Emily Baldasso, I am 19 years old and love listening to music and spending time with family and friends. I have a passion for learning and have always loved learning new things.

I want to be a teacher because I love to watch children grow and build their knowledge. I also admire having the opportunity to build strong and meaningful relationships with the children and their families to create a positive and nurturing environment.

My name is Michael Kay! I am studying at The University of South Australia to be a Primary Educator. I am currently on placement in which I will learn and observe the skills I need in order to be a successful teacher. My interests include sports such as basketball and soccer and IT. I currently work at East Marden OSHC which helps me build skills such as communication and teamwork, it has also given me experience on how to work with students.

Juniors

Hello from Juniors!

The Juniors are learning and researching about Honey Ants in Inquiry this term, after reading the story Honey Ant Dreaming they made their own story boards and will eventually make their own information posters about Honey Ants and what other artworks/stories they appear in.

Honey Ant Dreaming

After a long rain, Ellery Creek filled with water. With the heavy flow of water, many fish came from the north. As the creek dried out, a fish was jumping about in the ever-decreasing water, and then a yabbie came along and ate the fish. It then dug itself underground, where it transformed into a honey ant. The honey ant then travelled through the gorge, through the Ellery Creek big hole and south to a place named Yirampa, which is the Arrente word for honey ant. This story is about the creation of our land.

The honey ant is a totem for Arrente people in central Australia.

Resource Hub

Dear Felixstow Students and Families,

As some of you may have noticed our wonderful Resource Hub has been 'out of action' this term. Unfortunately, during the school holidays we experienced water leakage in the ceiling over the resource hub which resulted in the floor being flooded and the majority of the picture books damaged.

Due to the severe damage the carpet has had to be replaced and sadly the picture books discarded.

We are grateful to all the students' who have been so understanding during this time while the library has been out of action.

Families we ask that you please stay tuned as we will be looking for volunteers to help with covering the new books as they start arriving!

Welcome Back!

After a well-deserved break and holiday overseas, our wonderful SSO Kelly will be returning in Week 4, we're sure you are all just as excited to see her as we are!
