ST ANDREWS COLLEGE MARAYONG

eNewsletter Term 4 Week 8

From The Principal

Dear Members of the St Andrews College Community,

It’s been a very eventful week for Mr Chiappetta receiving the Aria Award for Music Teacher of the Year live on Channel 9. How excited and proud we all were. To add to that St Andrews Day was a great day with the Mass and Investiture of our new group of Captains and Student Leaders a very special occasion. All who got involved seemed to have a really fun day. The parent involvement in pinning the badges on their children was a real highlight for me. The pride and emotion shown was beautiful to see. Now starts the work of realising the many initiatives they have planned as a group from the Student Leaders Retreats as well as harnessing the talents and commitment of the wider community. I am looking forward to seeing their goals realised and offer the group my full support.

I wish all who are attending ACYF in Perth a wonderful experience. I look forward to hearing about it upon your return.

 ‘It’s All About Learning’

Gospel Reflection

"In my brokenness, can I see my vulnerability as a place where God wants to know me?" God has a fondness for what is fragile. This means us. Advent tells us that God came to us—and comes to us still—with complete vulnerability. Christ is to be found among what is fragile—including us, ourselves, when pain and loss have left us feeling less than whole. In coming to us as a child, Christ chooses to take on our human vulnerability. We see this not only in his birth but also, with awful clarity, at the other end of his life, when on the cross he shows us the lengths he is willing to go to in order to enter into our experience.  Darkness is where incarnation begins. The gorgeous texts of Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany shimmer with the light that God brings into our midst, as in the prologue to John’s Gospel: The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it (John 1:5). Yet if we lean too quickly toward the light, we miss seeing one of the greatest gifts this season has to offer us: that the deepest darkness is the place where God comes to us. In the womb, in the night, in the dreaming; when we are lost, when our world has come undone, when we cannot see the next step on the path; in all the darkness that attends our life, whether hopeful darkness or horrendous, God meets us. God’s first priority is not to do away with the dark but to be present to us in it. I will give you the treasures of darkness, God says in Isaiah 45:3, and riches hidden in secret places. For the Christ who was born two millennia ago, for the Christ who seeks to be born in us this day, the darkness is where incarnation begins. Can we imagine the darkness as a place where God meets us—and not only meets us, but asks to take form in this world through us? Comfort, O comfort my people, we hear God cry out in an Advent text from Isaiah (40:1). If, in this life, I cannot do away with grief, then I pray that I will at least enter into it with a heart open to this comfort, this solace that is one of the greatest treasures God offers us in the landscape of this season. This comfort is no mere pablum, no saccharine wish. And though it is deeply personal, it is not merely that; solace does not leave us to our own solitude. True comfort opens our broken heart toward the broken heart of the world and, in that opening, illuminates a doorway, a threshold, a connection. It reveals to us a place where, in the company of heaven and earth, we can begin anew, bearing forth the solace we have found.

Year 10 Orientation to Senior School Program

We have just finished the first week of the program and the students are starting to get into the rhythm of Senior Schooling and the expectations surrounding Years 11 and 12. It was a pleasure to present to them a session on ‘Sleep and Success’ today. The large group were engaged and asked some very insightful questions. Next week the Year 11 2020 group will have another taste of the program before rehearsing for our Awards Ceremony and End of Year Mass on Monday 16th December.

Year 7 Orientation Day

It was wonderful to see the new Year 7 2020 group and the enthusiasm, nerves, excitement and amazement that goes with the change of schooling for their secondary learning journey. The Year 9 Peer Support students as well as the staff were really helpful in assisting the students and ensured a very successful day. We look forward to greeting them on Thursday 30th January when Years 7 and 10 return (Junior Campus) and Year 11 and 12 return (Senior Campus).

Year 7 Swim School

This is occurring next week and I would like to thank Mr Weaver and staff for their organisation. It is vital in our country that our young ones know how to swim competently.

Renovations and upgrades to the College

The Top Yard on the Junior Campus has been finished now and it looks great. Both staff and students have commented how much it lifts the yard. Another table tennis table will be located on the Senior Campus as well. The Gym is being renovated and should be ready for the new school year all going to plan. We are ordering new furniture for a number of classrooms in order to assist in the learning. This should be arriving in the new year.

Our focus at St Andrews College is to develop each student using the SPIRE Framework.

What is in the Planner?

Social networking is a big part of our lives. Learning to use social networking sites requires us to be ethical and sensitive in what we do and engage in online. Many people say that they are unhappy being permanently switched on and constantly watching the thoughts of others rather than their own. We need to be mindful that our devices are not controlling out lives.

Procrastination is something that effects everyone. It stems from avoiding tasks, being afraid of unpleasant outcomes, being a perfectionist or a lack of time management skills. To overcome procrastination you should identify tasks that you delay, create a list of things you need to do, use positive self talk to tackle difficult tasks, break tasks into achievable parts, set time goals on tasks and set some self expectations to guide you.

Plagiarism is when you use someone else’s intellectual property without acknowledging it. If someone pretends that they created the work it is unfair and is in breach of College and NESA guidelines. Intellectual property includes writing, artistic work, music, inventions, designs, images, symbols, names and computer generated images.

Ways to avoid plagiarism include:

Paraphrasing- using different words to express the meaning.

Citing- listing other authors' names and publication year of sources used

Quoting- using the exact authors words in quotation marks and listing their name

Referencing- under the heading reference, describe in alphabetical order each source used and the author's name

Summarising- using your own words to describe what the author is saying and use their name

God bless

Year 11 2020

Year 11 Transition Week has been an opportunity for students to experience their senior pattern of study. It is important that students apply themselves to their new subjects before considering a change of subject. In particular students are reminded to avoid changing subjects due to friends.

RoSA grades will be available for Year 10 students in the coming weeks via Students Online.

Year 12 2020

Year 12 are encouraged to work hard up until the conclusion of Week 9. During the holidays all students should read their Year 12 texts and make notes, so they minimise the workload involved in reading the texts during the term. Reading each text also gives the students an advantage when they are studying the texts.

Students are also encouraged to practise past HSC essays during the holidays which can be accessed via the NESA site.

Year 11 RoSA grades will be available via Students Online in the coming weeks.

Students are encouraged to participate in the Executive Director’s Summer Reading Challenge. Reading and writing go hand in hand. So parctising your reading will support your writing achievement in 2020.

End of Year Reports

It is important to read your report carefully in order to understand the advice given by each of your teachers to support your improvement. Therefore when you receive your report, it is not a group of documents you quickly look at and discard. Instead each student is encouraged to use their report feedback to set personal learning goals in 2020.

St Andrew’s Day Speech 2017 College Captain Alyana Cabral

Good morning parents, students, teachers and staff. It is an honour and great joy for me to be addressing you all today, and I would like to thank Mr Kennaugh for the opportunity. Even though it feels like a world away, it’s only been two years since I was sitting on these same chairs as you all in this very hall.

Now, I am studying Commerce, with majors in Commercial Law and Human Resources at The University of Sydney alongside my internship at a recruitment firm. Though, as cliche as it sounds, it’s safe to say that the knowledge, experiences and unconditional support I had gained and received at St Andrews College has strongly influenced the path I am on today. The time you spend in high school is one which you will always cherish and remember, along with being a place you make lifelong friends. You will always reminisce together about memorable whole school events, hilarious lunchtime inside jokes and, for me personally, laugh at the countless times you cried to Ms Thomson because you thought you failed an exam.

Our school provides us with, once in a lifetime opportunities to immerse ourselves in culture and school spirit through events such as school carnivals, unity days and St Andrew’s Days. We should be proud, grateful and understanding of the significant effort of all the teachers and staff in  our community. Whether it be the ARIA worthy amount of effort Mr Chiappetta puts into CAN every year, the pathways advice Ms May gives, or the tough love of our teachers, everyone works as hard as they can to ensure the best possible outcome for all students.

I encourage you all to be grateful for all the opportunities our school provides its students with, whether that be on the playground or in the classroom. Participate in absolutely anything and everything you can as these are often opportunities you will never receive again. Listen to the advice your teachers give, as they will always support you on the path you choose to take - whether that be further education, full-time work, or if you’re still figuring out what best suits you. The various and numerous experiences you will have in high school aren’t just to “help you get into university” but are character building, helping you to strive for your personal best. Above all else, St Andrews College teaches you to be kind, dedicated and live you life with “Faith in Christ”. Thank you for having me today and enjoy the rest of your day!

Social Justice Day at Australian Catholic University

On the 22nd of November, five students who actively participate in the Vinnies Group and myself were chosen to attend the Social Justice Day at Australian Catholic University in Strathfield. We kicked off the day with a big welcome meeting and went through four workshops throughout the day. Through these workshops I thoroughly learnt about mental illness in our society, how Vinnies encourages and does thoughtful giving, the suffering of migrants and refugees, and the ways of the cross. After attending these workshops and being surrounded with other students as intrigued in social justice as myself, I definitely feel inspired to initiate new things within the Vinnies Groups at the College. I see a bright future of multiple fundraisers which cater to a broader group of society which we don’t usually cater to, for e.g the mentally ill and refugees.

I hope to help bring the community closer with the help of the Vinnies Group and that our school will continue to grow in the aspect of social justice.

Young Christian Students Team (YCS)

On the 22nd of November, the Young Christian Students Team (YCS) held their very first Trivia event in response to the current catastrophic bushfires as well as the damning drought affecting our beloved farmers. As a legacy of Ebony O’Connor (College Captain of 2019), YCS wanted to support the suffering farmers and then the bushfires which have swept across NSW. Not only did the fires destroy the lives of many native Australian animals, they also destroyed the lives of many, many hard working Australians. Some of them lost land, while others lost their homes. According to the NSW Rural Fire Services, it takes an average two to three minutes for the average single story home to burn to the ground. Thus, it takes two to three minutes for a person to lose all their material belongings as well as their sentiments and memories. In the midst of all of the chaos, Channel 7 released an article showing the outrage the customers of Coles had for the absence of their favourite Dairy Farmers Cottage Cheese. Some took to social media to complain about the issue; wondering why such an iconic Aussie staple had gone missing. An investigation into the issue revealed the company had gone into Administration because of a lack of supply. It is general knowledge that the main ingredient of cottage cheese is milk. It is also general knowledge that milk comes from cows. The cows (and their farmers) who are currently suffering under the great Australian sun. The supply has diminished exponentially as the cost of being a farmer has increased to an overwhelming rate. Not knowing who needed the help the most, YCS found a Christian charity, Frontier Services, who would be able to distribute the funds accordingly.

YCS worked hard in their spare time to create fun and intriguing trivia questions and these made the event a success. The tunes were provided by YCS’ very own DJ Azari and the event was hosted by MCs Jerica Cabanit, Mikayla Garland, Zachary Chambers, and Moura Mikaheal. There was a good turn out of students and teachers and a good interaction with the YCS team. Chips and drinks were supplied and devoured over the course of the event and a good time was had by all. Both teachers and students donated generously and a clean $200 was made on the night. It may not seem like much in the grand scheme of things, but it’s $200 more and a show of support for our favoured cottage cheese.

Billy Elliott Drama Excursion

On Wednesday the 13th November 2019, the Year 9 and 10 Elective Drama classes travelled to the city to watch a performance of ‘Billy Elliot’ at the Lyric Theatre.

To start off the day we gathered together at school, inside the Drama room and Mr Lenehan made sure everyone was present. After sir had taken the roll we began our journey for the day and started to walk to Marayong station so we could catch a train into Town Hall. We caught a 9:40 train. We got off at 10:45 and we made our way to the Darling Harbour shopping centre. We sat, ate lunch and I mingled with the other schools and made some new friends. I bought some lollies to take to the play. We met at 12:15 to start our walk to the Sydney Lyric Theatre. We got our tickets and headed into the theatre.

The play was absolutely amazing! The way the stage was set was fantastic as the props were thoughtfully placed on the stage. The dancing was in point! The plot of the play was well written.  Suspense was seen throughout the play and especially built up when Billy received the letter. The lighting was amazing it absolutely matched the vibe of the stage and audience. The play ended at 4pm and we made our journey back to Marayong. Over all I really, really enjoyed the play and you could tell the actors loved performing it.

Alyssa Sabbadin

I thought the acting was really good. The actors managed to convey the character emotions and actions very well.

The dancing was spectacular and overall the play was very entertaining. I enjoyed the performance. The part that most appealed to me was the end of Act 1, where the lighting and setting seemed to change constantly while so many different things were happening. It was overall a very impressive musical.

Brandon Pollock

Billy Elliot was a wonderful experience because the very talented actors brought the play and its message to life. The staging was well developed and the lighting was excellent. Billy Elliot is about a gifted 11 year old battling through gender stereotypes in the backdrop of a British mining strike. Although the play was predominantly centred on Billy’s character the backstory of the struggles of the English miners were beautifully portrayed and heartbreaking.

Riya Chauhan

The acting was very impressive as emotions were portrayed really well.

The staging was very good as the whole stage was used which made the performance look more grand and exciting.

Lighting was very well managed and was helpful in setting the right mood for every scene and dance performance.

The dancing was synchronised which made it look very professional; it matched perfectly with the music and really did engage the audience.

Overall, the play was very entertaining as it had the complete balance of everything, the acting was great and the musical style presentation made it very grand and special.

Year 10 Camp

Sunday night prior to camp, Year 10 students were already chatting about the camp on Google Classroom. Comments going around were ‘Cabins are cool’, ‘So excited!’ and ‘I can’t sleep cuz I’m so pumped #letsgetthispartystarted’. The atmosphere in the Quad on Monday morning was intense. Everyone couldn’t get on the buses quick enough.

Building strong and healthy relationships with students and staff is an important part of St Andrews College. Year 10 camp is a perfect way to build those bonds. At camp we were given the opportunity to mix with peers and engage in many outdoor activities. We learnt how to surf at Soldiers Beach, experienced paddle boarding at Budgewoi and BMX riding on a track back at Camp Toukley.

Courage and skills were tested with the ‘Leap of Faith’. We had a supportive and fun framework for leadership skills to develop, and for everyone to work as a team and to appreciate the value of each other’s’ friendships. All with the aim of extending our physical and emotional capabilities, while enhancing self-confidence and self-reliance.

Everyone was having an amazing time; it was stress free and we all knew what was happening at all times. This was a fantastic camp for both students and teachers. The team building activities and challenges were great and relevant as they were linked to life and the classroom.

At the end of an amazing few days it was sad to say goodbye, but we are ready with newly found confidence and friendships for the year to come. Our final day at camp included more exciting challenges. Some were worn out and took the opportunity to have a nap on the bus, while others enjoyed sharing their favourite moments of the camp. However, I am sure that some were eager to return to the comforts of home. Thank you to the Camp Toukley staff and teaching staff for providing the students with a great experience.

PDSSSC INTERMEDIATE GIRLS BASKETBALL GRANDFINAL

This season, I had the honour of coaching the Intermediate Girls Basketball Team in the PDSSSC Basketball Competition. The girls showed up to their games every Thursday with extensive enthusiasm and motivation. After winning many rounds of basketball and their Semi Final, they progressed to the Grand Final.

On Thursday the 21st November, the intermediate girls played the Grand Final against McCarthy Catholic College. The girls were nervous - they had only lost one game this season, and it was to the very school they were now facing. They took the lead early on in the game and entered the second half still securing that lead. The intensity of the game was immense and became tiring for the girls - most of which had just come back from a three day camp. We started to slip and fell behind by a basket or two towards the end of the game. The girls fought back and after a few baskets, tied the game at 18. In overtime, the now exhausted girls played their best, but ultimately McCarthy took the win in the end.

Having coached most of the girls on this team for the past four years, I have seen them grow and develop into both experienced basketball players and accomplished young women. The team played a great season and should be extremely proud of their efforts.

Bennelong Fun Day: Raging Waters

Throughout the year Bennelong has been working hard, contributing a lot of effort and maintaining a determined mindset. This collective effort was rewarded with the title of the 2019 House Cup Champions and a fun day out to Raging Waters.

On the 5th of December the Bennelong House of 2019 was lucky enough to have a day out at Raging Waters. As soon as we arrived you could feel the optimism and excitement in the air. When we entered everybody rushed to the change rooms so they could get into their swimwear and get right into the fun. Everybody dispersed into different directions trying to get onto as many rides as they possibly could. The fearless ran straight to the large rides while people like myself began with the smaller rides so they could warm into the day. The people who weren’t as enthusiastic for rides were able to swim and play games in the pool. As soon as the waves in the wave pool switched on a whole crowd of not only students but teachers ran to the water trying to get involved in the fun.

This day was certainly rewarding for everybody involved. Not only were we able to enjoy ourselves and have a lot of fun but we were able to create closer relationships and new memories that we can remember for a lifetime. It’s fair to say that everybody in Bennelong is more determined than ever to win the 2020 House Cup because of how rewarding and awesome our Raging Waters Day was!
