St Pat's News

February 26, 2020

At St Patrick’s Parish Primary School we hold the care, safety and wellbeing of children and young people as a central and fundamental responsibility of our school.

From The RE Leader - Annie Forrest

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of our journey through the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus to bring about this change, moving away from our normal way of life and making a new start to share in the glory of Easter.

A change of heart can make all the difference!

Project Compassion Challenge

What: All students and families at St Patrick’s are invited to join the Project Compassion challenge. It's your family's own decision if you would like to donate for one week or all weeks.

For the four weeks of Lent the Mini Vinnies group are coordinating a whole school Project Compassion fundraising campaign.

The theme for Project Compassion this Lent is “Go Further, Together. Together at St Patrick’s we have a weekly challenge to raise money towards Caritas.

We live in a world where all our basic needs are met and at times we have excess items such as cars and TVs.

Week 1 challenge- bring 20 cents for every TV you have in your house.

Where: Bring your coin to your classroom or area Project Compassion box. At Monday assembly we will collect the money and add it to the large Project Compassion box. We will also announce the next weekly mission!

When: Week 1 challenge goes from  Monday 24th until Friday the 28th.

Aim: to show how even just a small donation can make such a difference in the lives of people living in poor countries.

Dear Parents, Parishioners, Carers, Staff & Students,

Working with Children Check

We always welcome and appreciate the help parents and others provide around the school. This week we had some wonderful helpers making pancakes for Shrove Tuesday. I remind you that parents and family members wishing to assist in the classroom, in the canteen, on excursions etc. must obtain a Working with Children check. This can be located by going to this link:  http://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/

The check you need is for volunteers. I encourage all parents to get this check.

Commissioning and Rite of Enrolment Mass

Thank you to all the families and staff that were able to attend Saturday night’s mass. It was good to see so many families make this commitment with their children.

Sports Day

Our Sports Day will take place at Brauerander Park in Warrnambool this Friday, beginning at 10.00am. All children will be transported to and from Brauerander on buses and all children, other than our Foundation and Year 1 students, will be competing in age groups. Foundation and Year 1 students will be competing in class levels. Children are asked to wear a T-shirt in their house colour or a ribbon of that colour if they don’t have a T-shirt. School sports shorts are to be worn with the T-shirt. Families are very welcome.

While parents are free to take photos/video of their own children at the sports, please be aware that as per our Digital Media Policy and Child Safe Policy, uploading any photos or video to social media that has children other than your own in it, without their permission, is not allowed. It is important to remember that not everyone is happy for their child’s image to be made public.

If parents would like to take their child/children home straight from the sports, please let the teacher in charge of that house group know so that they can be marked off the roll.

Teachers in charge of each house group are as follows:

Samaritan: Hannah Williams, Monique McCartney,

Winnen: Fraser Paton, Annie Forrest

Polding: Benson Steere, Leanne Mahney, Andrea Lane

Mackillop: Abby Lee, Antonia Balmer, Anne Robertson

Please ensure you grant consent for your children to attend the Sports Day by completing the form on PAM.

Folk Festival Camping setup

Folk Festival camping setup will take place on Thursday March 5th, beginning at 9.00am. Next Wednesday the students will take part in the Port Fairy Folk Festival School Workshops. This year the artist running the workshops will be Vern Hardie of Connected Circus who uses circus skills to explore resilience and positivity.

New Soft Plastics Bin

We have organised a soft plastics bin at school. Any of our soft plastic packaging can be placed in the Redcycle bin located outside Mrs McCartney’s classroom.

Soft plastics are plastics which are soft and can be scrunched into a ball. But if your plastic is not soft they must go to landfill.  Soft plastics are empty laminating sheets, packing pillows, confectionary wrappers, used glad wrap and crisp packets are all soft plastics. They must be dry before placing in the bin.

When the soft plastics bin is full, it will be taken to Warrnambool by the Bowes family. We appreciate them offering to do this for us. Thank you!

Families can take their home soft plastics to Coles or Woolworths as well.

Redcycle send their soft plastics to Replas where it is turned into outdoor furniture.

This whole new idea is to reduce waste that is going to landfill.

It will be interesting to see how much we can collect and stop it being thrown out.

From St Pat’s Sustainability Leaders - Ella and Hugo.

St Patrick's Sports Day

We are looking forward to St Patrick’s Athletics Day this Friday at Brauerander Park, Warrnambool. Our students have been practising for their events in PE classes and are very much looking forward to giving their best athletic efforts. Winners of events on the day from ages 9 and up will qualify for selection to the St. Patrick’s Athletic Team. All events will be scored and each child’s efforts will contribute to their houses score. We hope to see as many parents and grandparents as possible to help cheer on our students. Tommy Greene

Warrnambool & Moyne Youth Awards

Nominations are now open for the annual Warrnambool and Moyne Youth Awards.

Coordinated by the Youth Councils, the Awards recognise young people aged between 12 and 25 years who live either in Warrnambool or Moyne Shire.

Award Changes

This year’s Awards will focus heavily on the values of individuals.

The Warrnambool and Moyne Youth Councillors have worked to create a more inclusive awards structure to recognise the wider contributions of our region’s young people. The Youth Councillors have identified five key values as the basis for the awards:

  • Cooperation
  • Resilience
  • Responsibility
  • Kindness
  • Passion

In addition, the awards will be divided into the following age categories; 12-15yrs; 16-18yrs; 19-25yrs. There will be a runner-up in each age category for each shire. There will no longer be separate award categories for male and female. In total there will be 6 winners and 6 runners-up, 3 each for Warrnambool and 3 each for Moyne.

Community members will be asked to nominate a young person and explain which 3 of the 5 values the nominee has demonstrated through their particular endeavours and/or efforts.

Youth Showcase

This year we are looking to showcase the diverse talents of young people aged between 12 and 25. The 2020 Youth Awards will see the launch of a Youth Showcase which will include exhibits of work from young creatives, young performers, young entrepreneurs, young trades people and young apprentices.

The Youth Showcase will be launched during Youth Week at the Lighthouse Theatre and will be on display 3-19 April.

Young performers will perform at the Youth Awards presentation event on 17 April.

We are currently seeking expressions of interest from an individual or group to participate in the Youth Showcase.
