Dudley Public School Newsletter

Term 1 Week 9

Principal’s Message

Happy Harmony Week

We are very fortunate to have such a lovely school community where students, staff and families get along and support each other to contribute to a diverse and inclusive culture of acceptance and belonging. Dudley Public School represents the values of kindness and harmony in the community and we acknowledge that our school community is a diverse and multicultural collection of people.

The vast array of birth countries of our students including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Denmark, Czech Republic and Thailand reflect the diversity of our student population together with 21 students who identify as Aboriginal or/and Torres Strait Islander and 8 students who speak languages other than English at home.

With this in mind, we celebrate the harmonious Dudley Public School community and the unique and wonderful individuals that contribute to making it a great place for our students to thrive, succeed and grow everyday.

NAPLAN 2023

Congratulations to all of our Year 3 and 5 students for completing the NAPLAN assessment. The series of 4 tests have been conducted over the last week and will provide feedback to the school and parents/carers on how students are achieving in relation to their skills in reading, writing, language conventions and numeracy. We are very proud of the way the students have conducted themselves during the tests and are confident that every student in Years 3 and 5 have done their absolute best. Reports on student results will be available to parents later in the year. More information will be distributed to families at this time on how to navigate the test reports.

Attendance Congratulations!

Dudley Public School was the first ranked school in the Glenrock Network of Schools (21 schools in total) in regards to student attendance last week (Term 1, Week 8) with an attendance average of 96.6%. A huge thankyou to all of our parents and carers who have worked incredibly hard this year so far to ensure that our students are present at school and are maximising their learning potential everyday. Our attendance rates are incredibly high this year and each week we have tracked a higher percentage of students present than that of the same time last year. Let’s keep up the great work.

School Photo Day

Next Wednesday 29 March will see our annual school photos take place at school. School photos are a tradition in all schools and are a wonderful keepsake and memory of each person’s time at school. To ensure a successful photo day we ask families to consider the following:

- ALL students wear full summer school uniform (including black/white socks and shoes). Girls have the choice of wearing the red/black polo or tunic dress.

- Please ensure your child/ren are at school on time on photo day to avoid missing their class photos.

- Pack clean foods for Fruit Break and recess, just in case your child’s class photos are after the recess break.

- All payments are made directly with the photo company online. No money is collected by Dudley PS.

School Production 2023 – ‘SKY HIGH’

At the end of Term 3 this year we will be proudly presenting our school musical production ‘SKY HIGH’. It is with great excitement that we begin preparing for the production which will be held on Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 September. Students will present a matinee and two night performances. There will also be a full dress rehearsal on Friday 8 September. Every student will perform on stage throughout the show as each class presents their section of the production culminating in a fantastic finale.

The production will be a fabulous opportunity for the school community to come together to work on a shared project and celebrate the expanding performing arts program at Dudley Public School. More information will be distributed to families next term.

Peer Support Program

This year we have introduced the Peer Support program where students engage in K-6 groupings each fortnight, working collaboratively on aspects of being an effective learner, being resilient and general wellbeing concepts. Each group of students has a Year 6 leader who takes on the teacher role and presents a 30 minute lesson to their peers in the group from Kindergarten to Year 5. Peer Support is timetabled on the Friday of each odd week of term (the alternating Friday to Whole School Assemblies). We look forward to seeing the bonds grow between students across all grades, the development of quality leadership attributes for our Year 6s and an increase in collaborative practice and sense of belonging for all students.

Have a terrific week everyone,

Halogen Young Leaders Day

Our School Captains and School Vice Captains attended the Halogen Young Leaders Day in Sydney on 7 May. This was a wonderful opportunity shared with 5000 other young leaders from around New South Wales designed to inspire and develop student leadership skills. Read the reflections on four of the five key note speakers from our captains below.

Governor General David Hurley

Major General David Hurley was appointed as Australia's 27th Governor General on 1 July 2019. He grew up in Port Kembla and attended Port Kembla High. When he turned 18 he decided to enroll in the military. As part of his duties, he had to lead 38 personnel. He found this to be quite intimidating as the group consisted of sergeants and older staff who had previous combat experience in Vietnam.

He provided the following advice on leadership. "You should never lead someone for your ego" and "the most important thing about being a leader is humility". Also, you should always listen to people's concerns.

Major General David Hurley came from humble beginnings in Port Kembla, a town not unlike Newcastle. His father worked in the steel works and his mother, in a local shop. From these beginnings, he has risen to be the King's representative in Australia. He is quite an extraordinary Australian and an inspirational leader. By Lincoln C

Australian Netball Champion - Caitlin Bassett

My favourite speech was by Caitlin Bassett. Caitlin is a fantastic, 6'5" tall netball shooter for the diamonds. She was always determined to become the best version of herself and not what other people thought she should be. Caitlin told us that when she first started playing netball at age 11, her coach at the time thought she would be great at GD and GK because of her height but she didn't enjoy defending. Her sister was a shooter and Caitlin started practising her shooting at home. She later then tried out for the State team playing the positions GA and GS (the shooting positions). She was selected for the team and that was when her career took off.

After this, she was selected for the Diamonds (the Australian team) at age 20. Caitlin persevered through her training sessions when she first joined the team. At the gym, her coach made her do the bench press. At that time she wasn’t used to doing so much training and at first, she couldn't lift 30kg, 20kg, or even 15kg. The coach next gave her a broomstick to bench press with. She thought this was silly and felt ashamed because her teammates could do over 70kg. Instead of making her feel bad though, they cheered her on when she made it through her first kilograms. She now can bench press over 45kg and encourages everyone in hard challenges.

She became captain of the Diamonds in 2017. Her motto for the team when she was captain was, ‘We Before Me’. This was because she wanted to encourage the team players to always think about others before themselves. She stuck to netball even in hard times by keeping a strong mind. By Mollie W

Comedian - Nazeem Hussain

Nazeem Hussain is one of the many leaders that performed at the young leaders conference. Nazeem spoke out about his childhood and how he could not sit still, he could not be sensible until he found reading. He read books and books but only the funny ones because they reminded him of himself. Cheeky, silly and naughty. He said that life was pointless without a laugh from time to time. Nazeem is his mum's number one fan whilst being terrified of her. She took things into her own hands and he loved that about her.  Nazeem taught us that a laugh from here to there was essential even for a leader. And that life is too short not to have a good time. Sydney Thunder Cricketer - Chris Green

Chris Green is one of the most inspiring cricketers of all time. He was born in Durban, South Africa and moved to Australia when he was 7 years old. It was really difficult for him to make new friends when he moved to Australia. Chris plays for the well known cricket team Sydney Thunder. When Chris became captain, he made sure that he included everyone in the team. But when he was captain, he couldn't do it by himself. He had his friends help him along the way. Chris said at the National Young Leaders Day ' It's very important to align yourself with people you trust'.  Chris believes in equality, looking at the positive and negative side of things and it's important to trust your gut instinct. Chris Green is an inspirational role model to all kids around Australia. By Mia V

Band News

Our amazing Dudley School band consists of 14 eager beginning musicians. With the guidance of their music teacher Jason Bone, they have been learning the basics of holding and playing their instruments. Each band session, the students are excited to strum, blow, and tap their instruments. They have been working hard each Tuesday lunch and are currently working on their first song as a band. It is exciting to see the amazing progress they have made so far and the potential they have to develop into a fantastic school band.

Garden Club

We've been enjoying the warmer weather in the garden on Wednesdays. In the last fortnight, we've had a lovely large team turn out for garden club and we've managed to get a lot done! We've had a walk around to look at our more unusual plants. Harry helpfully suggested a Google search feature that can identify plants through photos. This is the loveliest part of garden club - watching the children become experts and sharing their knowledge with others. A lot of our new Kindergarten students have been coming along and learning from our Year 1-6 students. We had a chance to try eating some bush tucker plants including Lilly Pillies and Midgen Berries. One was tart and the other was very sweet. Perhaps you can try them for yourself. They can both be found in our bee garden area. Last week, we got in and pruned some of the wonderful plants that are thriving in our sensory beds. The students did a great job of clearing some of the excess flowers and seeds that the plants are producing. It has been wonderful to see the collaborative efforts of students as the negotiate and communicate in their teams to make sure the job is done right. Mrs Adams and a terrific team cleared and prepared our vegetable beds for a fresh crop. There was a lot of excitement as we found a huge variety of insect-life thriving as well - lady beetles, native bees and some interesting beetles! We were also fascinated by the intricate webs that some spiders have been carefully crafting. No wonder our gardens are thriving with these helpful pollinators around!

Garbage Guardians

Last Friday, Charlotte and Kalani did a wonderful job educating students at our assembly about our Return and Earn recycling scheme. Did you know that from July - December last year we raised $113 from our Return and Earn and more importantly, saved 1300 bottles from landfill? We are incredibly proud of our efforts and hope to top our result this year. Congratulations to Zara in 1/2S who was awarded the Garbage Guardians prize this fortnight. Zara was nominated after she was seen picking up rubbish that others had left behind in the playground. Well done, Zara!

Rubbish Workshops

This week we commenced our rubbish education workshops with some very eager students in KF! With the help of our Environmental Leader, Piper, our youngest school members learnt all about our bin pods system and how we can sort and recycle our lunchbox waste. It was wonderful to see the excitement and conversations had - we are incredibly lucky to have so many environmentally conscious citizens on our hands! We look forward to visiting all classrooms in the coming weeks.
