October 27, 2022 - Term 4 Week 3

Principal's Pen

Dear Parents & Community Members,

The School Board met last week for our first of two meetings this term.  Discussions included a review of 2022 student data across literacy, numeracy and the social-emotional domain.  Given teachers had spent considerable time analysing he data, the Board was also privy to the initial planning thoughts discussed.  These ideas will be drafted into Operational Plans for the new school year and shared at the next meeting.

Last week I was privileged to spend the majority of my time with the Year 6 students at the Woodman Point camp.  All individuals in the group pushed themselves to obtain goals over and above expectations – a credit to them all.  Overall the attitude and levels of maturity demonstrated made attending staff extremely proud.  Special thanks to Mr Lillico, Miss Powley and Mrs Barrett for supervision during the camp.

Finally, tomorrow (Friday, October 28) is World Teachers’ Day.  We take this opportunity to thank ALL staff who work at Glengarry Primary School.  This year’s theme is “Hats off to teachers”; please consider wishing staff a “Happy World Teachers’ Day” or lifting your hat when you greet them.

Important Information

COVID Protocols Lifted

As you would be aware, National Cabinet agreed on 30 September 2022 to implement a nationally consistent approach to easing Australia’s COVID-19 response measures.

As of October 14,  (2022) the COVID Transition (Testing and Isolation) Directions are revoked. This removes mandatory requirements for isolation and testing for cases and close contacts.

We know that COVID-19 remains a risk to our health and wellbeing, particularly those vulnerable to respiratory illness, so it is very important for all of us to take personal responsibility to keep ourselves, our families and our colleagues safe.

Taking personal responsibility

First and foremost, stay home if you are unwell and get tested if you have cold or flu symptoms.

WA.gov.au has detailed information on how to access tests.

If you test positive to COVID-19, you are strongly encouraged to continue to:

  • not attend work until the symptoms have resolved (unless advised otherwise by your employer)
  • register your RAT result
  • tell your household members and intimate partners that you have tested positive for COVID-19
  • advise work that you have tested positive for COVID-19.

Please also continue to practise healthy hygiene habits and stay up to date with vaccinations.

1:1 TECHNOLOGY TIMELINE

In preparation for the 2023 school year, we are now inviting parents of students who will be in Year 4 in 2023, to access the Winthrop Parent Portal to purchase an iPad and required accessories: http://sales.winaust.com.au/shop/glengarryps

Alternatively, families are able to provide a family-owned iPad if it runs iOS 16 as a minimum requirement, and has 64gb of storage.

We would also ask that parents of students who are in Year 3 in 2023, complete a quick survey to indicate whether they would be willing to purchase an iPad for their child if they are in a 3/4 class. Please click the following link to access the survey: https://forms.office.com/r/MX3y2TQrkS

Steve Manzoney Award - Nominations

This is an annual award presented at the Year 6 Graduation Ceremony in December.

The award has been in place since 2004 and was established to honour the hard work and commitment to the school and Duncraig community by one of our parents, Mr Steve Manzoney who sadly passed away in September 2004.  In 1999 Steve took up a position on the P&C social committee and committed an enormous amount of time and energy organising a variety of functions that raised valuable funds for the school and brought the community together.  In 2001 he also was the P&C Treasurer.  He was always willing to lend a hand around the school, helping out on carnival days and other school events.  He was someone you could rely on.  Steve was also involved in the Duncraig community, coaching basketball, umpiring T-ball and actively involved in the junior football as a coach and runner.

We are now requesting nominations for this award.  The criteria can be found on the nomination form which can be downloaded within this article.  A copy will also be sent via Connect.

Please return the form to the office marked “Attention to the Principal” by Friday, November 4th.

Lost Property

Everyone loses things now and then, however the Lost Property boxes were overflowing at the end of Term 3 with unnamed items.  Putting names on jackets, hats and other personal possessions will make it easy to return them to students.

The Lost Property has been sorted and clothing without names will be laid out at the assembly tomorrow for parents to take.  Any remaining items will be disposed of.

Around Glengarry

Cockman House Excursion

On Thursday the 20th of October, the Room 1 and 2 students travelled to Cockman House for a History Excursion.  It was a very hands-on excursion where the students were able to explore the artefacts preserved in the home for over 160 years!

We were warmly greeted by our tour operator at Cockman House.  The first activity was to create a historical timeline of significant people or events that were pivotal to the building, establishment and preservation of Cockman House.  Some of the students were chosen to dress up in costumes representing a significant person and stand along a large rope holding a sign illustrating the date and event that occurred.  There were three ‘pretend’ weddings and we learned that 23 kids were born and lived in the home from when it was built until it became a museum.

After the introduction to the house, we spilt into small groups to explore the homestead and the surrounding grounds, looking for clues to answer inquiry questions.  We carried out some of the chores that children were expected to do – like washing clothes, finding chicken eggs and watering the vegetables.  We all learned a lot about the artefacts in the house, such as the potty that children were to clean each morning, the bedrooms that six or more children would occupy to sleep toe-to-toe and the outside dunny were the occupant's used newspaper in place of toilet paper.

We concluded the excursion making a toy.  The students compared their current childhood with that of the children at Cockman House.  The children certainly did not have iPads or the commercial toys they have now!  They used things that they would find around the home to create their own games and toys.  The room 1 and 2 students used a wooden clothes peg, pipeline, cloth and wool to make peg dolls to play with.

Thank you to all the parents and family members who volunteered their time to enable our students to have this amazing experience.  We all had lots of fun at Cockman house and are keen to visit again!

Room 1 & 2 Wonder Recycling Rewards for Schools

During Term 3, Room 1 and 2 participated in a sustainability project, to keep soft plastic bread bags and tags out of landfill.

The Wonder Recycling Rewards for Schools program sent a package with everything needed to get collecting.  The students promoted the collection of the soft plastics throughout the school by hanging posters in classrooms, via morning notices, through class connect notices and school newsletters.

Each pink recycling box was to be filled with 5kg of bread bags.  We were able to fill 4 out of the 5 boxes!

20 kg of bread bags!  Which equalled 2000 points for our school. Woohoo!

Thank you to everyone who took the time to collect bread bags and tags.

Unfortunately, the bread tags collected were not able to count towards the program this year.  They will be donated to the Bread Tags for Wheelchairs organization, to raise funds to buy wheelchairs for disadvantaged people, mainly in South Africa.

A special thank you to Lydia, Alyssa and Bailey, who helped carry the boxes to Australia Post, to be sent away on time after the Athletics Carnival.

We look forward to everyone’s continued support in participating in this program in 2023.

The Room 1 & 2 students, Mrs. Macaulay, Mrs. Rollings & Mrs. Senior

Winning Gymnast

After a successful competition season with many apparatus and all round placings, 8 year old Sunny competed in the State Championships at the beginning of October.  She gave a gold medal winning beam routine, and came away with the title of State Champion on beam in National Level 5.

Health and Hygiene

School Hats

Students must wear their navy blue 'bucket' hats in Term 4 when not undercover.

Students not wearing their hat at recess and lunch time will be directed to an undercover area.  Please ensure your child's hat is labelled with their name so that it may be returned to them promptly if lost.

Is your child feeling unwell?

If your child is unwell with cold and flu symptoms, please keep them at home and consider checking in with your GP if symptoms don't resolve

Healthy WA also recommends seeking a COVID test for cold and flu symptoms.  See links below for more info.

Department of Health LINK

DoE LINK

As directed by our guidelines, we will ask for your child to be collected if they are displaying cold symptoms such as a cough, runny nose, fever etc.

We have a student at school who is immunocompromised.  This means they can potentially become gravely ill even when contracting a common cold/virus.  Please be mindful of sending students to school when they are unwell, as they may spread their infection.  Please speak with your GP/health professional and see the information in the links above re: advice about keeping your child at home when unwell.

Chaplain's Chat

Sharing Circles

This Term Obang, has been using Sharing Circles as a strategy to support students with talking through social concerns in a safe, turn taking environment.  The rules are simple and with the support of an adult, students are encouraged to solve their simple social problems.

P&C News

Halloween Disco

All the kids, juniors & seniors, were amazing!!!  The costumes were awesome, everyone was so well behaved, the atmosphere was so much fun and the dance floor was pumping.  DJ Morgan did a superb job and he commented that this was the best school disco he's been to and was loving all the song requests from the students.

All the students and parents should be super proud!

Also, a massive thank you to all the parent helpers and volunteers that helped make it such a successful evening.

Community News

The Rick Rollers

To the best community- Glengarry!

On Saturday 26 November family Rick are participating in the Mix 94.5 Milk Carton Regatta.

Having saved up a substantial number of cartons, this weekend, the build began!

My eldest daughter Maddie and I are the contestants, hoping to get our boat across the line first.  We are unsure of our race time/category but will be sure to communicate closer to the date.

My two other children, Mia and Lachy, will be drumming up support in our tent, applying small temporary tattoos to people passing by.  Our team's name is "Rick Rollers"- be sure to come and grab one if you come down.

A QR code will be attached to our boat from 9am, so if you do come down, please place a vote for our boat. It won't be the best, but it has lots of team spirit embedded in the hundreds of dollars' worth of adhesive propping it together.

We hope to see you there!

Mrs Rick
