Deputy Principal's Message

Dear Parents, Carers and Community

The year is flying by and it’s hard to believe we are almost at the end of Term 3. We have had several classroom and whole school events over the past fortnight and have appreciated the support of our parents and community.

WELCOME NEW STAFF

This term we have welcomed two new staff members to our team.

Ms Catherine Byrne has joined our amazing group of Special Needs Education Assistants and Mrs Tara Smith is one of our new junior school teachers in Room 9. Having done relief at our school, both are already familiar faces to our students and we are so pleased to have Catherine and Tara working with us in an ongoing capacity. We are also pleased to announce that Mrs Sandy Cooke will increase to full time, share teaching Room 9 with Tara and continuing with her Kindy class for the remainder of the week. We are fortunate to have these wonderful ladies teaching our children, at Scarborough.

HOUSE ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

Thank you to everyone who was able to join us last Friday for our annual House Athletics Carnival. Held this year at our local reserve, Deanmore Square, it was a fantastic day filled with sportsmanship, competition and friendly rivalry. Whole school events require a great deal of planning and organisation, both behind the scenes and on the day. I’d like to acknowledge our Physical Education Teacher, Mr Aaron Bacci for coordinating the carnival, along with our parent volunteers and staff who contributed and made the day such a success. Most importantly I’d like to congratulate our children for demonstrating the Scarborough values of Respect, Responsibility and Commitment, whilst encouraging and cheering for their peers throughout the carnival. You made us very proud. A highlight for the children was the Parents vs Year 6 Students vs Staff events, with the whole school chanting and excited about the spectacle. Although the results of the adult races were mixed, there was no doubt about the winning House results, with Challenger taking home the overall House Championship Shield - well done! Closely followed by Parmelia and then Stirling, the competition was tight, reminding us that participation in every race and team game is important for the overall House result.

BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL

I would like to remind our community of the steps in place before and after school to keep our children safe. We understand that school is an important place for connecting with other families, and ask for your support with the following steps each day:

Before School

  • Our school is open and classrooms accessible at 8:35am
  • there should be no parents or students on site before 8:20am without an appointment or pre-arranged school activity such as running club
  • before 8:35am, our staff are busy preparing for the day and engaging in parent or staff meetings so there is no classroom supervision for students
  • if students arrive before 8.35, they need to wait at the colourful tables near the undercover area (not outside classrooms)
  • a staff member will be on duty at around 8.20am at which time they will supervise the children to have a quick play on the basketball court, handball squares, or oval
  • at 8.35am the handbell will ring to signify that staff are ready and classrooms are open. This is the time that children can enter classrooms and complete their morning routines

After school

  • we encourage parents to connect and chat with other parents at pick up time
  • after the home time bell, parents need to supervise their own children as teachers will be packing away, preparing for the next day, or having meetings with parents or other staff members
  • all parents and students should have left the school site by 3:20pm
  • for safety reasons; scooters, bikes and skateboards should not be ridden on the school site at drop off and pick up time. Students should dismount once they enter school grounds and walk their wheels to our bike and scooter racks

We thank you in advance for your assistance in keeping our community safe. Your support with maintaining a positive environment before and after school, is appreciated.

SOD TURNING EVENT FOR OUR NEW BUILDING

Yesterday we were visited by the Premier of WA, Hon. Mark McGowan and Local Member for Scarborough Stuart Aubrey, for a sod turning event on our oval. Joined by members of our school community, the event was an opportunity to commemorate the commencement of our new build. The sod turning was followed by a tour of our school, including a visit to our Library, newly refurbished Science/Art/Music Room and a Talk for Writing demonstration by Mrs King and the students of Room 4. The building works are due to continue next week, and a further update will be provided in the next newsletter.

Thank you for your ongoing support. As always, should you have any queries or concerns, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Warm regards,

Tina Van Maanen

Speak Up Competition

The speak up competition aims to provide students with the opportunity to express their views confidently, using appropriate speaking skills and to encourage students to research, compose and deliver a speech on a subject of their choosing.

During term 2, Year 4-6 students presented their speeches to their classes with 3 students selected to represent Scarborough PS in the regional heats. There were 125 students from 41 schools represented at the heats.

This year Harry Lawson from room 12 has made it all the way to the finals with his speech on Sharks where he will be competing against 12 other students. Harry is the first student from Scarborough Primary School to make it this far.

Congratulations Harry, knock their socks off next week!

The Blanket Activity - Koora Wangkininy Boodjar

Recently, our staff and Year 5/6 students participated in a Cultural Learning session presented by Aboriginal Network Coordinators, Charmaine Climo and Renarta Coyne. The Blanket Activity 'Koora Wangkaniny Boodjar' began with blankets arranged on the floor to represent Australia before the arrival of European explorers and settlers.  Through storytelling, we were taken on an immersive exploration of the history and impact of colonisation on our Aboriginal people. It was a thought-provoking and at times confronting journey, with resoundingly positive feedback from staff and students about the experience.

Our Year 2 classes also participated in a workshop 'Djurpin Kaa-Kaa' aimed at the younger years, where they developed understanding of Noongar vocabulary and local knowledge. We are planning to continue offering these experiences each year as part of our whole school planning, to incorporate Aboriginal Culture and awareness into our classroom programs.

Lost Property

We have many clothing and personal items located in our lost property including the jewellery in the picture.

All clothing items will be donated to the uniform shop at the end of Term 3 and personal items to charity. If you are missing items could you please check the cupboard located in the under cover area.

CANTEEN

We are always looking for canteen volunteers. So, if you or anyone in your immediate family (aunts, uncles, grandparents etc) have any Friday mornings available, Laura would love some assistance in the SPS canteen.

Helping out in Canteen means that you come in and support Laura for 2 hours, usually between 10-12 pm or 11-1 pm; whatever works for you! Duties consist of washing dishes, prepping pizzas, handing out lunches, etc.

E-mail us at the P&C or speak to Laura on Fridays in the canteen if you are keen to help.

Please also note that all canteen orders need to be placed via QuickCliq prior to 8.30 am on Friday. Cash is not accepted.
