PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

This week we celebrated Harmony week. The message of Harmony Week is ‘Everyone Belongs’. It is a week of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home – from the traditional owners of this land to those who have come to us from around the world.

Our Australian Story is diverse and unique. Every individual and cultural group paint a part of the canvas that is the Australia we live in today. Taking the time to celebrate our diversity is a significant way in which we can learn and understand.

I like to think that the ‘Everybody Belongs’ message extends beyond cultural diversity, encompassing all forms of difference between individuals. Here at Scarborough PS we recognize that despite any sort of difference or diversity, everyone has their own unique strengths and talents that need to be embraced and celebrated. It is the combination of all these diverse strengths and talents that make the Scarborough Primary School community such a uniquely warm, caring and welcoming community to belong to.

Every individual is valued. Everyone belongs.

School Board

The Scarborough Primary School Board met for the first time this year on Wednesday evening. We would like to welcome our new parent representatives, Paul Monaghan, Patric Przeradzki and Helen Tate along with new staff representative Annie Clarke. Their contributions at this strategic level to the future direction of Scarborough PS, along with those of the rest of the board members are valued and appreciated.

The Board is still looking to fill a Community Representative position. This position has a one year tenure and gives the opportunity for a member of the broader community to lend their expertise to the strategic planning of the school. If you have any suggestions for this position, please contact the school office on 9341 1202 and they will be forwarded to Andrea Marchesi, Board Chair or Sarah Dawson, Principal who will contact you for further information.  Any suggestions will then be tabled at the next meeting for consideration

The Board noted that the school is currently in talks with the Department of Education over plans to cater for the increasing enrolment pressures in the area. The Department has classed Scarborough Primary School as part of their ‘Inner City School’ project to increase student capacity amongst several schools in that corridor, extending to Scarborough. Steady growth is expected over the next ten years and the Department are in the preliminary planning stages to cater for this. More details will be available once plans specific to our school have been set.

NAPLAN Online

This year Scarborough PS will be one of almost 1000 schools across the state who will be delivering NAPLAN testing in an online format. If you have a child in Year 3 or Year 5, please look out for an information brochure that will be coming home next week.

NAPLAN online is expected to have several benefits including increased student engagement, a differentiated sequence of questions to best meet the needs of each individual child and the faster availability of results.

This year, the NAPLAN tests will be delivered between Tuesday 14 May and Friday 24 May. Some practice testing will be carried out this term to familiarise students with the online platform of delivery.

If you have any queries about NAPLAN online or your child’s participation in the testing, please don’t hesitate to contact Sarah Dawson, Principal on 93411202

Parent/Teacher/Student interviews (3-way conferences) will be held shortly.

The conference will be led primarily by your child, with the assistance of their teacher. It is an opportunity for you to learn about your child’s successes in class, their goals going forward and how both you and the school can support them in achieving their goals.

If you require time with a teacher outside of this, please arrange a separate meeting by telephoning the school on 9341 1202 or contacting your class teacher directly.

Scarborough Primary School is looking for an enthusiastic interschool soccer coach for our Year 5/6 students. Training will begin late in Term 1 with games played Term 2 on Friday afternoons.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. For more information please contact Erica Salt on Erica.Salt@education.wa.edu.au.

School Oval

The use of the school oval by individual community members outside of school hours is a feature of the inclusive culture at our school. Unfortunately, we have had several instances of dog poo being left behind in the last few weeks which has caused some inconvenience to our students when they access the oval and our teachers in their preparation of outdoor learning activities. Could we please ask that individuals walking their dogs be mindful of picking up any litter they may leave along the way.

Uniform Shop Co-Ordinator/s Urgently Needed for 2020

As some of you may be aware it is likely that I will no longer have children attending Scarborough Primary next year, so I am seeking someone - or a few people - to take on the role of Uniform Shop Coordinator. Please speak with me, come and check out the shop on Wednesday mornings or email me if you are interested in discussing this rewarding volunteer role.

Nature Play Refurbishment

Our P&C has been lucky enough to secure a Stronger Communities Development grant which has allowed us to engage Projectscape to upgrade and refurbish our nature play space.  The works will be undertaken during the school holiday break in April, but we will need some community volunteers to assist with some pre and post jobs.

We’ll need some helpers on Saturday 13th April and Saturday 27th April for some jobs such as sanding, painting, mulching, gardening, planting and the like – if you’re able to lend a hand please get in touch with Jackie Jackson 0422 977 208.

It will be great for the kids to come back after the break to a new and exciting play space!
