Dear Parents & Community Members,

School Board

The Glengarry Primary School Board is an integral aspect of school operations.  As per the Board Constitution, there is a set term for all members (excluding the Principal who is classified as ex-officio) and elections need to be held on a regular basis.  At the end of 2022, the following members completed their terms and I thank them for their support:

  • Mrs Vi Garrood (community representative)
  • Mrs Megan Moyle (community representative)
  • Mrs Catherine Rudd (staff representative)

The School Board is comprised of five parent / carer members of the school community, three staff members and the Principal.  All decisions that relate to the overall planning of school operations are discussed at School Board meetings and directions for future development mapped out.  Apart from matters relating to staff, the School Board provides advice and support on a wide range of school related issues.

All School Board meetings are open to the public, although at times the general public may be asked to leave the meeting for a short time and only School Board members can vote on any given issue.  The dates for meetings are generally printed on each Term Planner so the general community are aware when the group will meet, i.e. the first meeting for 2023 is to be held on Monday, March 27 at 7.00pm in the Staff Room. Items on this agenda include discussion regarding the new Business Plan, the draft of the 2022 Annual Report and a review of 2023 planning.

As a result of the parent / carer vacancy on the Board, additional members are required from the community for a three-year period.  The School Board positions will be decided following nomination and a subsequent election if required.  Please consider being a member of this vital group by sending your name and contact details (by way of nomination) to peter.meston@education.wa.edu.au, by 3.00pm on Friday, February 24.

Finally, I had fun visiting Year 3 to 5 classes over the past week to introduce students to Literacy Pro for the year.  This meant teaching Year 3 children how to use the platform and for the other years reminding and reviewing reading levels for the new year, i.e. via an online test.  To get students started, traditionally I read a book and have all undertake the same quiz before everyone commences reading books at their individual levels and undertaking the associated quiz.

The book we read this year was called “Bamboozled” (David Legge) - an easy to read story but with some wonderful illustrations.  A number of children asked if they could read the book again – suitable for all ages - https://youtu.be/40tGiY3oU2E

Important Information

Every Day Counts

At Glengarry Primary School we place great importance on good attendance and punctuality.  We know that a child’s attendance has a direct impact on their learning.  Those children who are regularly absent from school and regularly late do not achieve their potential and do fall behind in class.  Please support the school in this by ensuring that your child attends school regularly and arrives ready to learn and on time at 8.45am.

The School Education Act 1999 requires children of compulsory school age to attend school (This now applies to Pre-Primary Students).  When a child is unable to attend, legislation requires that parents/caregivers forward written notification providing a reasonable cause for the absence of their child.

When an explanation is not provided to the school within three days of the original day’s absence, the class teacher may send a letter requesting an explanation.  These letters are printed and sent to families every five weeks.

NAPLAN

A reminder to parents of Year 3 and 5 students that NAPLAN assessments take place from Wednesday, 15 March to Monday, 27 March which is Weeks 7 to 9 of Term 1.  Assessments are given in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation and numeracy.  This year, W.A. students will complete the assessments online, except for the Year 3 Writing assessment, which will still be completed on paper.  The NAPLAN brochure sent home earlier this term, to the Year 3s and 5s gives more information about NAPLAN.  The NAPLAN assessments are one of the methods that schools use to determine the achievement of its students and the effectiveness of the academic program.

Express Reading

We are looking for some wonderful volunteers to help us listen to reading in the Makuru Block!  Reading Express will take place in the wet area each Tuesday and Thursday morning from 8.30am to 8.45am, starting from Tuesday February 21.

House Activity - Responsibility

On Friday, February 3, students gathered in small groups to discuss what responsibility is and what they are responsible for.   Then they participated in a simple treasure hunt with their buddy.

Buddies took turns picking an object within their line of sight (e.g. the drink fountains) but did not tell their buddy what they have chosen. Buddies then helped each other find ‘the treasure’ by giving directions such as “hotter” or “colder”.

Students enjoyed the challenge in helping each other while having alot of fun!

HOPE Report

The Glengarry Primary School HOPE group involves everyone within the school and all things environmental.

Anyone can be involved in activities to encourage our children to become active citizens within our community regarding Bushland care, Recycling or Gardening.

Last week Miss Martin's class spent some time in the HOPE area looking at earthworms, testing soil from around the school, learning about container recycling and grass trees.  Room 3 students then wrote about what they enjoyed and what they would like to do in the garden next time.

Did you know that volunteers are there every Friday morning before school, and you may head down with your children to help?!  WE are always after more helpers, so if you or your grandparent are eager to assist in any way, we know that Ms Algar would be extremely pleased to hear from you!

Bring in those containers for change 10c each

The cage, near the greenhouse at ‘Alfreton Road’ side of school, will be open from 8:30 till 3:15 every Friday of the school term.

Most homes recycle wine, spirit and milk bottles into their yellow bins, that’s great.

On-the-go drink containers are the problem ones to collect.  Just toss them into a box at home, especially after a party, and bring them to school on a Friday.  Don't forget to take the lids off.

Health and Hygiene

Is your child feeling unwell?

If your child is unwell with cold and flu symptoms, please keep them at home and consider checking in with your GP if symptoms don't resolve

Healthy WA also recommends seeking a COVID test for cold and flu symptoms.  See links below for more info.

Department of Health LINK

DoE LINK

As directed by our guidelines, we will ask for your child to be collected if they are displaying cold symptoms such as a cough, runny nose, fever etc.

We have a student at school who is immunocompromised.  This means they can potentially become gravely ill even when contracting a common cold/virus.  Please be mindful of sending students to school when they are unwell, as they may spread their infection.  Please speak with your GP/health professional and see the information in the links above re: advice about keeping your child at home when unwell.
