St Pat's News

October 30, 2019

At St Patrick’s Parish Primary School we hold the care, safety and wellbeing of children and young people as a central and fundamental responsibility of our school.

From The RE Leader - Peter Sanderson

This Friday is All Saints Day and Saturday is All Souls Day. At this time each year, we focus on the great communion of saints – on All Saints Day, the wonderful company of saints we know as part of the reality of our Catholic tradition; on All Souls Day – those who have died – Friends, colleagues, relatives …… Other leaders whom we have known …worked with …laughed with …wept with …walked with … many of them are not famous. Their statues are not in churches but their pictures are in our homes and their stories alive in our community, and in us. We know of their goodness and their struggles. We pray for them and remember them with love, celebrating in faith their journey to God, now within the great communion of saints.

We praise you, O God, and we honour all your holy ones.

We ask the help of those women and men who struggled against evil and stood firm,

Who loved one another, who worked for justice and peace,

Who healed the sick and fed the hungry.

We on earth, and they in heaven, sing one song of praise.

We in grace, and they in glory, form one communion in Christ, your Son.

Make us , and all those we love, worthy to be called your saints.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Those whom we love and lose

are no longer where they were before.

They are now wherever we are.

St John Chrysostom

From The Principal - Sue Paulka

Dear Parents, Parishioners, Carers, Staff & Students,

Thank you

My sincere thanks to everyone who has wished me well in my new position for next year. It’s been an emotional few days and I have really appreciated and been quite overwhelmed by all the kind words and thoughts I have received. I will continue to keep you updated regarding the plans for my replacement as soon as there is something to report.

Grandparents and Special Friend’s Morning

What a wonderful occasion our Grandparents and Special Friends Day was on Monday. The grandparents and special friends thoroughly enjoyed the work in house groups, the liturgy, concert and morning tea. It was very heartening to see the obvious enjoyment that everyone present gained from the occasion. Thank you to the staff for their work in organising this event and to the Parents and Friends for organising the morning tea.

Foundation 2020 Transition

We look forward to welcoming our 2020 Foundation students for their first formal transition session next Monday from 9.30am - 11.30am.

Spelling Competition

Well done to our students who competed  in the Western District Spelling competition last week. Although none of the students made it to the final, they all benefited from the experience.

Athletics

Well done to Sam Graham, Poppy Myers and Harry Pollock who competed in the State Track and Field Championships in Melbourne last week. Sam finished 16th and Harry finished 15th in the shot put and Poppy finished 12th in the 100 metres and 15th in the 200m ‑ an excellent effort!

Cricket

Well done to our Yr 5/6 girls who competed in the T20 cricket last week in Warrnambool. The girls won 2 and lost 2 games but had a great day out and were excellent ambassadors for our school. Thank you to Annie Forrest for coaching the team.

Kind regards,

No Parking at the School Crossing

In an effort to improve child safety in and around the school crossing, the Moyne Shire has erected a number of "No Standing" signs near the crossing, which means no parking is permitted in the area between the signs. Please be mindful of this when dropping off and picking up your children so that you are not fined.

The office is open from 8.30am - 4.00pm each day.

There is no supervision for students before 8.40am. Teachers use the time prior to the doors opening for setting up for the day, therefore they are not available to supervise students. Students who arrive at school prior to 8.40am need to wait at the side door near the hall until the doors are opened.

The bell for the start of the day rings at 8.55am, any student arriving after this time needs to be signed in using the iPad at the office.

The bell for the end of the day rings at 3.20pm. If for any reason you are going to be later than 3.30pm to collect your child/children, please contact the school office.

Art Room News

This term our initial whole school focus is Modelling. This topic allows great scope for exploring and creating by manipulating a variety of materials.  Clay, plasticine, wire, wax, stone, wood, plaster and paper are all able to be modelled into forms using a variety of techniques and skills.

The Year 5/6 classes have been exploring the versatility of plasticine and have been creating textured ‘paintings’ using this medium. We studied the work of Canadian artist and author Barbara Reid who uses plasticine to create the illustrations for her books.  We explored how she shows depth and perspective in her art as well as the techniques she uses to blend and mix colours.

The Year 3/4s have been using a number of mediums to create wonderful works of art.  Their first modelling task was to form a crab using air dry clay, using their hand shapes to create the legs and feelers of the crab.  These were then painted. They have also been exploring wire as a medium for creating sculptures. They have made wire bugs!

F/1/2 students have been exploring the properties of clay.  They have spent time using their hands and tools to create shapes, coils and patterns.  They have learned how to look after clay and how to join shapes effectively. This will culminate in the creation of their own coil pot using air dry clay.

At the beginning of this term, the children in 3/4 were lucky enough to receive a visit from the one and only “David Attenborough”. The children were able to ask Sir David about his many documentaries and gain insight into how people can bring about positive change to our environment.

He challenged the 3/4s to be environmental changemakers in the world. To do this, our work in inquiry, religion, ICT and writing will tie in together to create a comprehensive unit.  The students will research change markers in the past and present, become filmmakers and spread awareness for a cause that is important to them.

We look forward to seeing you at our end term learning showcase where you can learn from our budding activists!
