St Timothy's School Vermont

Term 2 Week 3 Friday 13th May 2022

All students at St Timothy's School have the right to feel safe. The care, safety and wellbeing of children and young people is the responsibility of all within our school.

Rapid Antigen Test

COVID  is still wide spread in the community. We ask that all children and staff complete the test twice a week.  Again, thank you for supporting us by testing your children. Please stay alert for symptoms!

We have had 2 cases in Year 4/5 this week and one staff member.

If you require additional kits please contact school.

IF A CLOSE CONTACT TEST POSITIVE YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ISOLATE BUT YOU MUST COMPLETE A RAT TEST EACH DAY AND WEAR A MASK.

Influenza

With borders opening and the arrival of colder weather, cases of influenza (the flu) are increasing throughout Victoria. Our community is at risk of higher rates of students and staff affected by the flu or COVID-19 this season.

What to do if your child gets sick

To help keep your child and our school community safe, please take the following steps if your child has any cold or flu-like symptoms:

  • take a COVID-19 test and follow the current Department of Health isolation requirements if a positive result is shown
  • keep your child at home until their symptoms pass
  • common flu-like symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose, loss of appetite, body aches and feeling extremely weak and tired
  • diagnosis of the flu can only be confirmed by a doctor after a nose or throat swab
  • encourage your child to wash their hands regularly and ask them to cover their nose and mouth when sneezing and coughing.

COVID-19 vaccination

COVID-19 vaccines are available free of charge to everyone aged 5 years and over in Australia.

It is important that children and young people have the best possible protection against the flu and COVID-19 by getting vaccinated.

Ensuring your children are protected against serious illness helps to protect everyone in our community, including older family members who may be at higher risk, along with younger children who can’t receive vaccinations yet.

You can book COVID-19 vaccinations through the COVID-19 hotline on 1800 675 398 or at a participating GP, pharmacy, or community health service.

Some local schools are also holding walk-in COVID-19 vaccination clinics on school grounds. Vaccination settings can be found at the Vaccine Clinic Finder.

Flu vaccination

Flu vaccination is recommended for everyone aged 6 months and over.

Some people are more at risk of complications from the flu and are eligible for free vaccination under the National Immunisation Program including:

  • anyone aged 65 years and older
  • pregnant women (at any stage of pregnancy)
  • all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged from 6 months and over
  • people 6 months or older with:
  • children on long-term aspirin therapy from 6 months to 10 years
  • children aged from 6 months to under 5 years.

Flu vaccinations can be booked through GPs and pharmacies, many of which can also provide COVID-19 vaccinations. If you would like more information about the flu vaccination, visit the Better Health Channel.

Safety Drills

Dear Parents

As indicated last wek, you may hear the children discussing Safety Drills. We will be practicing ( as we do each term) actions/procedure  needed in case of a range of emergency situations. This is to meet safety regulations and to give children confidence in situations that otherwise could be scary.

NAPLAN

This week the children in Year 3 & 5 have been involved in NAPLAN testing.  NAPLAN is one tool that is used to assess the level/standard, where children are performing, in line with the Australian/Victorian Curriculm. It is an assessment tool that allows your child to be rated against children from all over Australia.

At St Timothy's we continually, use a wide range of assessments that help us to gather data/ evidence, with the aim to use this data (including  day to day work, assessments and testing) to plan for future teaching and learning.

We expect to receive the NAPLAN  results later in the year.

Gospel Reflection ~ Greg Sunter

The passage from the Gospel of John actually comes from the Last Supper account, as is indicated by the opening line: ‘When Judas had gone’. However, the passage is being used during the postresurrection

Easter season. The passage about being glorified can be read in this context as referring to the crucifixion that was, rather than the crucifixion that is still to come in the original setting. The reference that Jesus will not be with the disciples much longer can also be read as an

indicator towards the Ascension. It is a clever liturgical use of a gospel passage out of its intended context. The second half of the gospel passage is perhaps the more familiar section. It is a common text for marriage ceremonies. However, sometimes its selection is purely based on the use of the term ‘love’. Earlier in his ministry, Jesus was asked which commandment was the most important.

He replied that you must love the Lord your God with all your heart and that you must love your neighbour as yourself. (Mt 22) The ‘new’ commandment that he issues at the Last Supper is not so much a new commandment as a variation on a theme. The newness highlights the changes that are occurring in the small group of friends. His language conveys an imperative: you must love one another, ‘just as I have loved you’. He tells the disciples – and us – that the way they behave towards one another must be with the same love that Jesus treated them. And the love that Jesus gave was the love of God for all the world. So the love that Jesus commands the disciples (us) to show one another is nothing less than the powerful love of God.
