HEALTH TIPS

Physical Activity

How Much Physical Activity Should My Child Be Doing?

·         School age children need at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day.  But more is better, so encourage your child to be active for up to several hours each day.

·         Children need a combination of moderate and vigorous activity.  ‘Moderate activity’ is any activity which is similar in intensity to a brisk walk e.g. bike riding or active playing.  ‘Vigorous activity’ is any activity which makes your child “huff and puff” e.g. organised sports, ballet, running or swimming laps.

·         Any activity that requires your child to expend energy should be encouraged. Go to http://raisingchildren.net.au for more information.

Physical Activity - Family Activities

If you’re looking for ways to help your family be more active, why not try:

·         walking or riding to school together

·         visiting the beach to play cricket or Frisbee

·         taking the dog for a walk

·         doing some gardening (try building a veggie patch!)

·         visiting the local swimming pool

·         playing at the park together;

·         going for a bike ride

·         bush walking

·         outings that involve walking (like the zoo)

·         participating in a community walk

·         buying children presents that encourage physical activity (like sports equipment or a kite).

For more ideas visit www.natureplaywa.org.au/  or http://raisingchildren.net.au.

Physical Activity For Kids

Physical activity should be part of a child’s daily routine. Physical activity is not only fun, but also important for healthy growth and development. Being involved in physical activity helps kids to make friends and learn physical and social skills.  The two points to remember are:

·         Children need at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity each day and up to several hours is even better!

·         Children should not spend more than two hours a day using electronic media for entertainment (e.g. TV, computer games, internet), especially during daylight hours.

Remember, by encouraging your child to be active when they are young, you are helping to establish a routine that will stay with them throughout their life.

For more information, go to http://raisingchildren.net.au or visit www.natureplaywa.org.au/ for some great active outdoor ideas.

Official Opening of Design and Technology Room – 28 November 2022

An Idea becomes Reality

Sunshine beat down on the crowd of students, staff and family gathered outside the Design and Technology Room at Rawlinson Primary School on Monday, 28 November.  Bright red tinsel strung across the front door lent a festive vibe, as our Principal, Mr Dedman outlined how an idea for a new direction in STEM at Rawlinson became the journey ending in the newly refurbished Design and Technology Room.  Though classes have been run out of the D&T Room since Term 3, after renovations, made possible with a grant from the Department of Education, it still held an “I’m new!” feel that demanded recognition.  To help us officially open the Design and Technology Room was Mrs Meredith Hammat, MLA – Member for Mirrabooka and after some inspiring speeches and a swift cut of the ribbon, students and staff showed off what Rawlinson students have been creating in the newly renovated and resourced classroom.

Once inside, Mrs Hammat, Rawlinson’s Administration Team and invited guests, listened to a brief presentation by Ms Siu, before being impressed with innovative kitchen gadgets.  Designed by Year 5 & 6 students in D&T and 3D printed in Digital Technology with Mr Stoneman, clever ideas like “The Sporfe” (Ms Siu claims intellectual property on the name), “The You-tensil” and “The Food Pounder” may one day end up in your bottom kitchen drawer.  In another section of the room, students teamed up with family members to help showcase one of the STEM resources purchased with the grant.  They had to work together to build chain reactions similar to the Fluor Engineering Challenge students had undertaken in March.  Mrs Hammat was wonderfully engaging, encouraging family teams to keep building their chain reactions and celebrating their successes.

This was a fantastic way of celebrating Rawlinson’s commitment to STEM and showcasing how we have used the generous funding by the State Government, to better cater to the learning needs of our students.  We thank Mrs Hammat for taking time to officially open our D&T Room and help us celebrate our students' and school’s success.  Thanks also to the delightful family members who came to work with our students and have fun with STEM.  I’m happy to report there were no tears, despite the challenges encountered.

Now that the new D&T Room is operational, we can look forward to many more innovative ideas and designs from our creatively genius students.  How exciting!

Ms Siu
