Week 2

About eighty students and staff proudly represented St Joseph’s at the Rockhampton ANZAC Day March yesterday. Student representatives also attended the Dawn Services at the Botanical Gardens and Alton Downs. Thank you for the great support in allowing the students to experience this important day and recognise and show respect for the ANZACs. Mrs Wadsworth put on an ANZAC morning tea for family members near the tuckshop. Thanks to those who supported this Legacy fundraiser and enjoyed the home baked biscuits.

Years 5 & 6 Maths Team Challenge

Twenty students from Years 5 and 6 will be taking part in the annual Maths Teams Challenge.  This will occur on 4 May at Glenmore State High School.  A physical letter was handed out to the relevant students today.

Learner Dispositions

We continue to explore the disposition of resilience.   The posters showing resilience when in the learning pit as well as the poster about being a resilient learner are both in our classrooms this term.  It would be great if you could have a discussion with your child talking about how they look for learning challenges.

St Joseph – Feast Day

May 1 is the Feast day of Saint Joseph the Worker, reflecting his status as a carpenter and patron of workers. While Saint Joseph has his principal feast day on March 19, the feast of Saint Joseph the Worker was introduced by Pope Pius XII in 1955 as an ecclesiastical counterpart to International Workers Day, also held on May 1. Saint Joseph was the foster father of Jesus and is held up by the Church as a model of the holiness of human labour. In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus is referred to as “the carpenter’s son”.

Father James Martin, a Jesuit priest, writes, “Jesus, Mary and Joseph honoured the Sabbath, and they paused for prayer but, like the poor today struggling to make ends meet, they worked – and worked hard. Joseph shows us never to doubt the value of work or the value of hidden acts of love.”

A Visit to Benevolent Living with Year 6 Student Council Representatives.

On Monday, we made ANZAC Day biscuits to take to Benevolent Living to share with residents.  We also made mini-ANZAC day wreaths for residents.  The morning was quite enjoyable, the residents were curious about what we wanted to do when we grew up, and they asked about our families and interests.  We also heard stories about what residents did when they were younger.  Although we were only there for half an hour, we really enjoyed the conversations, craft making and time spent with residents.
