TOKSAVE - Lihir International School

Term 2, Week 8, 2020

From the Principal

Dear parents and carers,

Many of you may have heard that we will welcome our teachers back to Lihir this Saturday. Upon arrival on Lihir, following company protocols, teachers and their families will be placed in 14 days isolation. This is part of the stringent process Newcrest has employed to assist in protecting Lihir island and its people. Following the isolation period, the teachers will have one week’s holiday break, with school resuming on Monday the 6th July. Please note that school will now resume on 6th July (not 13th July) due to teachers not having their annual professional development days in Port Moresby. Students will now have two weeks holiday break from Friday the 19th June to Sunday the 5th July.

School in term 3 will look vastly different at LIS. Covid 19 prevention measures are currently being undertaken to ensure all children are safe at school and social distancing requirements are met. A special circular will be sent to all parents and carers with in-depth explanations of what the ‘new normal’ at LIS will look like for term 3.  A brief overview of some changes for term 3 include:

More frequent hand washing, with extra wash stations being installed

Hand sanitiser available in all classrooms

Deep clean of school classrooms and play areas before school resumes for term 3

Sanitisation of desks, door handles and playground equipment twice daily

    Social distancing in classrooms

    Staggered lunch and recess breaks

No assemblies, sports carnivals, team sports

Restricted use of high contact resources

    No canteen

Restrictions on parents / carers and others entering school premises

These measures are initially to be implemented in term 3 and will be revisited before the beginning of term 4.

Please do not forget to join our assembly at 9am tomorrow. Click on the Meet link in the LIS Assembly classroom in Google Classroom and remember to mute your microphone.

Please contact myself or your child's teachers if you have any queries or concerns regarding your child's education at LIS.

Mr. Neville

Term 2 Student Council Activities

Students are invited to enter into a Covid 19 mask making competition. Let your imagination go and design and create a mask to reflect your understanding of the pandemic. Send a photo of yourself wearing your mask to your class teacher before the end of Week 8. Maybe you could include a couple of shots of your mask taken from different angles.

Students in Prep to Year 2 may choose to enter a colour in competition instead. Templates may be collected from school when you collect your at home learning pack for Weeks 5 to 9. You have 4 pictures to choose from.

From the Deputy Principal

There are many educational websites that provide learning activities for students of all ages.

This website, https://www.esa.int/kids/en/learn/Life_in_Space/Space_Stations/The_International_Space_Station has information about the International Space Station as games and activities.

I hope everyone has a great weekend.
