Dear Parents/Carers and Friends of EHPS
Our first week back was incredible with perfect weather for our Staff Development Day and Athletics Carnival. Students have come back settled and ready to learn.
I heard that many families were impacted with COVID over the holidays. The Department of Education (DoE) has put out recommendations to continue to be vigilant with cleaning and hygiene in the weeks ahead. More RAT tests will be delivered to the school shortly and we will hand these out to families. Canberra excursion will go ahead as planned and we have moved other events towards the end of the term as recommended by the DoE. We were excited about having NAIDOC activities and Maths @ EHPS events early in the term that included our school community. Hopefully by having these later in the term we can have full school community participation.
With so much going on we have included a Term 3 calendar for quick reference for parents. Please be advised that events, dates and times may change due to circumstances out of our control. It is just lovely seeing events happening again at school.
A focus this term for us all is increasing the amount of students arriving to school on time. Over the term we will be working with students and school community to explain how patterns of lateness can have a serious impact on students education. When a child misses just 5 minutes of school per day that equates to missing 3 days per year.
Inclusive education is a large part of what we deliver at EHPS. On Monday 18th July, staff participated in a Cultural Excursion that took us to Mount Sugarloaf and Swansea Heads. Staff were fascinated by the teaching and experience of the elder Uncle Paul and Jeremy Coward and his dance group. The day was also supported by Liam Begnell (EHPS Cultural Educator) and Renae Honeysett EHPS Aboriginal Education Officer. Staff participated in activities including smoking ceremony, traditional way of teaching and stories traditional cultural philosophies and pedagogy in western education systems, bush tucker/ medicine site explanations and traditional dance. We have learned and recognised plants that we also have growing on our school site and their significance in Aboriginal culture. Staff feedback indicated that it was a powerful excursion that directly influenced staff confidence and increased knowledge that they will implement in their classes.
